What a week or so it's been for Stoke.

First there was defeat by Sunderland - managed by Alex Neil - which ended Michael O'Neill's time as manager.

Then came a smart victory at Blackburn - their second of the season - but now Neil was watching on from the stands with a view to taking over at the club.

Neil was then appointed, hailing the reputation of owners the Coates family. He now needs to get the family fully on side with a strong start to his tenure.

It might be a kind opener on paper with Swansea, having won only once so far this season, coming to the Potteries.

  2. Mowbray back in the north-eastpublished at 19:41 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

    Sunderland v Rotherham (19:45 BST)

The club Alex Neil left behind also begin a new chapter tonight, having appointed Tony Mowbray as their new manager.

Mowbray will drink in his native north-east air and supporters may forgive him his long time at Middlesbrough.

But only if he can produce results and it's a tricky opener against Rotherham.

Paul Warne's side are one of only two sides still unbeaten in the Championship with two wins and three draws so far.

  3. Coventry finally play at homepublished at 19:40 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

Coventry City v Preston North End (19:45 BST)

We're at the end of August but Coventry fans will be happy to finally be able to watch their team play at home.

The Sky Blues haven't played at the CBS Arena yet this campaign due to the pitch being deemed dangerous, a move that saw three of their league matches postponed and has left them winless at the bottom of the table, with a solitary point.

Securing some points tonight against Preston would provide a needed lift, but you have to go back 17 matches to September 2007 to find the last time Coventry won in this fixture in the league.

There's also the fact that Preston are so far unbeaten in the Championship and are yet to concede a goal. Their draw against Cardiff on Saturday was their fifth 0-0 so far this season.

  4. Robins flying with confidencepublished at 19:38 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

Bristol City v Huddersfield Town (19:45 BST)

Despite conceding another goal late on Saturday to draw 3-3 with Blackpool, there's a sense of optimism around Ashton Gate and a run of form that's seen Bristol City go unbeaten in their last six matches in all competitions.

Up front is where Nigel Pearson's side are a considerable threat. Their 11 goals this season so far is bettered by only three other teams in the league and the return of Antoine Semenyo from injury should only bolster that.

Huddersfield, by contrast, have had a slow start and languish in the bottom three with just one win to their name.

This fixture has tended to bring a lot of goals though - 27 across the last six league meetings, in fact. Will we be in for more of the same tonight?

  5. Clash of the Lancastrianspublished at 19:36 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

Blackpool v Blackburn Rovers (20:00 BST)

Both Lancastrian teams started this season under new management.

So far, it's been a up and down start to Michael Appleton's second spell in charge at Blackpool, whose side have won two, drawn two and lost two out of their six fixtures.

After impressively winning their first three matches of the season, Jon Dahl Tomasson's Blackburn have now lost their last three. Perhaps more concerning for fans is that Rovers have failed to score in any of those defeats.

They make the short trip to Bloomfield Road knowing there's still 24 hours left for them to keep hold of star striker Ben Brereton Diaz before the transfer window shuts.

Last night saw seven Championship matches take place and it's fair to say Sheffield United had an evening to remember. They thumped Reading 4-0 at Bramall Lane to leapfrog the Royals back to the top of the league table and make a significant statement of intent at this early part of the campaign.

It was also a night of celebration for Watford, who marked 100 years of football at Vicarage Road with a special black and white kit and a 2-1 win over Middlesbrough through a stoppage-time goal.

Norwich and Burnley both recorded wins against Birmingham and Millwall, and move up to second and third in the table respectively, while it was also three points for QPR and Luton.

Wigan were held to their fourth draw in six matches by West Brom, as they shared the points at the DW Stadium.
