GOAL! AZ Alkmaar 2-0 Dundee Utd (agg 2-1)published at 31 mins

    Tijjani Reijnders

United have it all to do now as AZ midfielder Reijnders drills in a 20-yard effort low into the far corner.

The Scottish side have really impressed but the Dutch hosts have been fairly clinical.

Two goals in 10 minutes have turned this.

Another fine ball in from Liam Smith is just a smidge too high for Steven Fletcher, who can't divert his header towards goal.

So often we've seen Scottish teams cave in situations like this.

AZ may well go on to win comfortably but United's response to the hosts' goal has been fantastic.

AZ Alkmaar 1-0 Dundee Utd (agg 1-1)

What an effort! What a save!!

Ian Harkes attempts an overhead bicycle kick. He connects with it perfectly but AZ keeper Verhulst makes an outrageous save to tip it over.

Was expecting the net to burst.

  6. Postpublished at 24 mins

AZ Alkmaar 1-0 Dundee Utd (agg 1-1)

United look for an immediate response as AZ keeper Verhulst needs to punch away another set-piece delivery.

This isn't one-way traffic at all.

  7. United 'should defend better'published at 20:25 British Summer Time 11 August 2022

AZ Alkmaar 1-0 Dundee Utd (agg 1-1)

    Craig Levein
Former Dundee United manager on BBC Sportsound

    Quote Message

Edwards doesn't go with Pavlidis for the cut-back. To be fair, it was good football and a tap-in finish, but Dundee United need to defend it better.

  8. goal

GOAL! AZ Alkmaar 1-0 Dundee Utd (agg 1-1)published at 21 mins

    Vangelis Pavlidis

    A fine goal.

AZ left-back Kerkez plays a one-two and gets himself into the left of the box before sliding a pass across to striker Pavlidis.

It's a first-time tap-in for the Greek forward. Really well-worked from the Dutch side.

2-0 to Gil Vicente in Portugal. 3-1 on aggregate.

  10. GREAT SAVE!published at 20 mins

AZ Alkmaar 0-0 Dundee Utd (agg 0-1)

Strong, strong hand from Mark Birighitti.

The Australian has started well in the United goal as he is sharp down to his left to palm a strike round the near post.

  11. 'Ross and his troops staying calm'published at 20:21 British Summer Time 11 August 2022

    AZ Alkmaar 0-0 Dundee Utd

    Calum Macdonald
    BBC Scotland in Alkmaar

Jack Ross hasn't left the edge of his technical area since kick-off. The United head coach seems relatively calm so far, his input has been limited to applause as his players are following his game-plan to the letter.

In contrast, opposite number Pascal Jansen, so confident before the match, hasn't moved from his seat as his side look for an opener.

He has a monitor just to his left which allows him to have an eye across any incidents instantly - something we might see adopted in Scotland?

  12. CLOSE!published at 18 mins

AZ Alkmaar 0-0 Dundee Utd (agg 0-1)

Not too far away as AZ forward Evjen has another strike from outside the box.

This one is far closer than his previous effort as his attempt rolls narrowly wide of the bottom-right post.

AZ Alkmaar 0-0 Dundee Utd (agg 0-1)

    Decent spell this for United.

A ball drops to Tony Watt on the left of the box and he attempts to dink a ball towards Steven Fletcher.

Cut out by the home defence, though.

  14. Postpublished at 15 mins

AZ Alkmaar 0-0 Dundee Utd (agg 0-1)

Charlie Mulgrew decides to leave it and gets himself in the box.

Dylan Levitt, on you go. The midfielder sticks it in the mixer but it's headed out for a United corner, which AZ keeper Verhulst punches away.

    Excellent stuff from Jamie McGrath.

The on-loan Wigan man bursts to get onto a ball over the top and wins a free-kick for his side.

Charlie Mulgrew to take from a promising crossing position...

31% possession so far for United.

Got to be honest, doesn't feel like that...

AZ Alkmaar 0-0 Dundee Utd (agg 0-1)

AZ left-back Kerkez charges up the wing and bends in a brilliant cross.

Greek striker Pavlidis is inches away from connecting with it and United keeper Birighitti gathers gratefully. Safe hands.

  18. Postpublished at 10 mins

AZ Alkmaar 0-0 Dundee Utd (agg 0-1)

Craig Sibbald sprays one out wide to Tony Watt but the striker's flick on is straight through to the home keeper.

Not really sticking in attack for United so far.

  19. Postpublished at 8 mins

AZ Alkmaar 0-0 Dundee Utd (agg 0-1)

Another effort for the hosts, this time it comes from range as AZ wide man Evjen has a go.

    Well over the crossbar.

  20. Postpublished at 6 mins

AZ Alkmaar 0-0 Dundee Utd (agg 0-1)

First sight of goal for AZ and it falls for striker Pavlidis.

The United defence are standing still as a low ball comes in and the AZ forward strikes first time.

Mark Birighitti is behind it, though. Let-off for the visitors.
