Aston Villa defender Diego Carlos ruptured his Achilles tendon during last week's victory over Everton and could be out for the season.

Romain Perraud, Tino Livramento and Theo Walcott remain on the sidelines.

  7. 'Football’s a passionate game'published at 12:04 British Summer Time 20 August 2022

Newcastle's Callum Wilson and West Ham's Michail Antonio agreed that players are influenced by a manager's behaviour on the touchline, as they discussed the issue in the latest episode of The Footballers Football Podcast.

After the clash between Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel and Tottenham counterpart Antonio Conte at full-time following a feisty London derby on Sunday, Antonio said: "If it gets like that, you do want to run through a brick wall, you do want to smash somebody.

"It’s like, ‘yeah, they’re on it. Let’s have a brawl as much as we can.’ We’re all together, 11 men on the field, so it does bring that fight.

"You could see it in the game.”

Despite some people condemning the heated exchange between the managers, Wilson found it "refreshing" to watch. "It’s refreshing that it’s not just shake hands and move on," he added.

"Football’s a passionate game at the end of the day.”

  8. 'Homegrown Winks at Tottenham crossroads'published at 12:02 British Summer Time 20 August 2022

    Tottenham v Wolves (12:30 BST)

    George Cummins
    BBC Radio 5 live

The boyhood Tottenham fan, who joined the club when he was five, is now at a crossroads.

Failing to make the squad for the second week in a row and training away from the first team, Winks’ future now almost certainly lies away from White Hart Lane.

It’s all very different from when he started the Champions League final in 2019 and signed a five-year contract a month later.

Under Mauricio Pochettino the midfielder produced some brilliant performances and became a regular in Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

Winks has made more than 200 appearances in all competitions.

But now Tottenham’s number eight has two options. Look for a loan move for the season and return next summer to fight for his place or accept a new challenge away from White Hart Lane?

It will be hard to leave a club he has been at for 21 years, but several sides in the Premier League would be interested. Reports in Spain suggest Valencia are also keen on the 26-year-old.

  9. 'We are the closest challengers to City and Liverpool'published at 11:59 British Summer Time 20 August 2022

    Tottenham v Wolves (12:30 BST)

It's only early in the new season, but we asked you, based on what you've seen of Tottenham so far, where you expect them to finish in May.

Here are some of your comments:

John: In order to finish in the top four, we will need the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United to have bad seasons again. This season we will have more European games to fit in as well. Can’t see us finishing higher than fifth, unless we sign at least two more very good and suitable players, or come up with a system where we don’t rely on Kane and Son breakaways.

James: It's funny that we are on another rollercoaster of praising Tottenham one minute and writing them off another. I personally think that we have progressed massively since Conte's arrival, both in terms of quality and tactically, and I have not been this optimistic since the Poch era. We are, regardless of fan bias, the closest challengers to City and Liverpool!

Tim: I still think we wasted £60m on Richarlison. We should have spent that on a creative midfielder. As for the worry about no new signings getting a start yet, don't panic Mr Mainwaring, Conte won't just change the whole team because he doesn't need to. Perisic and Bissouma will be drip-fed into the team slowly and Spurs will finish second, behind City this time.

Connor: For all the hype this summer, we still haven't addressed three major weaknesses. The first being a top-four quality centre back to replace Dier, a competent right wing-back and a creative midfielder. The non-performance on Sunday should have convinced Conte that Lenglet, Bissouma and Perisic must start. It'll be fourth at best if we ignore these glaring weaknesses.

  10. 'An itch Conte could end up failing to satisfactorily scratch'published at 11:57 British Summer Time 20 August 2022

    Tottenham v Wolves (12:30 BST)

Matt Burns, The Boy Hotspur, external

From a Spurs perspective the build-up to Sunday's derby had been an overtly optimistic tone. The mood within much of the fanbase and some quarters of the press was that our summer transfer activity had been resoundingly effective.

This feel-good factor has been to some degree been countered by Antonio Conte, who so far has failed to demonstrate much confidence in his new signings; neglecting to select any of them for a Premier League starting XI.

Perhaps some of this this underlying discontent influenced what became an increasingly graceless performance by Spurs, as witnessed by the poorly-timed tackle on Kai Havertz by Rodrigo Bentancur before we created our first goal, and the shameful hair pull by Cristian Romero on Marc Cucurella, just before our second.

A point retrieved from Chelsea away is certainly to be cherished, but one cannot help but feel we might have risen above yet another 'Battle of the Bridge' debacle.

Many will hail Spurs’ performance as resilient and sometimes pleasingly nasty, but had Anthony Taylor and his match officials been more on their marks, then a 10-man Tottenham losing 2-0 would have been far less appealing.

Tactically, Conte has plenty to ponder. The selection of Ryan Sessegnon over Ivan Perisic feels increasingly like a political one and Richarlison remains horribly overpriced at £60m.

Furthermore, the Italian’s wing-backs function with little authority, and the absence of any defined creativity in our midfield looks like an itch Antonio could end up spending the rest of the season failing to satisfactorily scratch.

  11. 'I admire what Conte is slowly building'published at 11:55 British Summer Time 20 August 2022

    Tottenham v Wolves (12:30 BST)

Tottenham left Stamford Bridge with a point thanks to Antonio Conte's influence and what he is building at the club, says former Premier League midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker.

Reflecting on Sunday's game, he told BBC Radio 5 Live: "For me you couldn’t ask for a better advert for the Premier League.

"A London derby, two passionate managers - it went onto the players and it was just great to watch. I absolutely loved it.

"As an overall breakdown of the game as a whole from what we saw, from a Tottenham perspective they didn’t turn up and they know that.

"But what I admire is the strength of character of what Antonio Conte is slowly building at that club. An old Tottenham would have lost that game, no doubt about it. They didn’t perform but still managed to come away with a draw."

  12. 'I like to show my quality by attacking'published at 11:53 British Summer Time 20 August 2022

Udogie says he "can't wait for his time to come" after completing a move from from Serie A club Udinese on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old, who will remain with the Italian club for the rest of the campaign, also said it's "an honour" to sign for Spurs.

He added: "It's a big club with a big history.

"It's a real honour to play under Antonio Conte because he knows football very well and I'm going to grow a lot with him.

"I like to be close to the action and show my quality by attacking."

On what he hopes to still achieve at Udinese this season, he said: "I want to grow as much as I can and to understand the game a bit more.

"The Premier League is the best league in the world so I'm looking forward to the challenges. I can't wait for the time to come. I'm excited."

  13. Udogie the latest Spurs recruitpublished at 11:50 British Summer Time 20 August 2022

Tottenham dipped back into the transfer market too this week for a player Antonio Conte has described as "one for the future".

They have completed the £15m signing of defender Destiny Udogie from Serie A club Udinese.

Udogie, 19, has agreed a five-year contract, while the fee could rise by a further £3m with add-ons.

The Italy Under-21 international, who only joined Udinese permanently this summer, will be loaned back to them for the rest of the campaign.

A left-back, he scored five goals and made four assists in 35 league appearances for Udinese last season.

Udinese signed Udogie on a season's loan from Hellas Verona in July 2021, and were obliged to buy him this summer as part of that deal - by which time his performances had attracted interest from other clubs.

Udogie is Tottenham's seventh summer signing following the arrivals of Ivan Perisic, Richarlison, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Clement Lenglet and Djed Spence.

  14. 'Wolves end a breathless pursuit but is Nunes a replacement or addition?'published at 11:48 British Summer Time 20 August 2022

    Tottenham v Wolves (12:30 BST)

    Mike Taylor
    BBC WM

It seems that very soon – perhaps even while you are reading these words – this page will scroll down to make room for the news that Wolves have completed the signing of Matheus Nunes, and he will be there on your screen, holding a gold and black scarf above his head. At last, breathless reports from Portugal began to buzz on Monday night, the Sporting Lisbon midfielder apparently coveted by Wolves throughout the summer will be theirs.

Wolves fans have been marched up and down this hill a few times during this transfer window – and previous editions – and might have been forgiven for not believing it until they saw the classic scarf-pose. But with Bruno Lage urging them to “trust him and the club” in soothing tones, excitement appears to be undimmed. And no wonder; you will probably have read much-quoted words from Pep Guardiola, hailing Nunes as one of the leading players in the world in his position, and there is widespread consensus that Wolves will be getting a highly talented player for their money.

Like Goncalo Guedes, who made his first appearance in Saturday’s gristly struggle with Fulham, Nunes has the ability and pedigree to be a considerable asset for Wolves, and when his signing is confirmed, it will be widely welcomed. The only caveat is that it does not appear to address what is by common consent Wolves' biggest problem – their lack of a finisher. With Raul Jimenez unfit there is no natural deputy – or direct competition for a player who found last season considerably more difficult than his earlier times at Molineux. This was again painfully evident on Saturday, when, penalty aside, they created the better chances, and were unable to make them count.

  15. 'A striker is desperately needed'published at 11:45 British Summer Time 20 August 2022

    Tottenham v Wolves (12:30 BST)

It is clear that while Wolves have bought well in Matheus Nunes, many fans still feel a forward is a priority, especially after the goalless home draw with Fulham.

Here are some of your comments:

John: In despair. The one bright light last season was having one of the best defences in the league. So, of course, Bruno changes it. Same old, same old yesterday - too many show ponies and not enough shire horses. Soufflés instead of substance.

Michael: It’s been glaringly obvious that Wolves badly need a striker who hunts around the penalty area to put those crosses away. Why the club’s hierarchy don’t do anything about it is staggering.

Jonathan: It's unfortunate that we are starting the season with a couple of key injuries. I don't think we need another forward. We have more than enough quality within the squad. I think the game against Fulham showed glimpses of greatness. A bit more focus and just playing together more in games will improve the team.

Tom: Currently, there are no ideas going forward. Passes are overthought and delayed to the point that being caught on the counter becomes inevitable. We're really lacking in too many areas of the pitch to hope for anything higher than 15th. A striker is desperately needed but no striker can score without service.

Darron: Listening to commentary whilst on holiday and, for the umpteenth time, we need quality strikers, and cutting-edge creativity in midfield, as we have no ideas going forward. We have a couple of weeks' transfer activity left, and I'm really worried for this season. Thankfully Sa was there to save the day.

Eoin: I thought we were much better this week than when we played Leeds. We kept the ball more and passed it around. It was good to see new signing Guedes get a run out at Molineux. I think we still lack a threat up front so more work or possible new signings need to be made. We definitely need to get some more points before our tough run of games.

  16. 'One of the most exciting talents in world football'published at 11:44 British Summer Time 20 August 2022

    Matheus NunesImage source, Getty Images

Wolves chairman Jeff Shi believes the club have secured one of "the most exciting talents in world football" by signing midfielder Matheus Nunes.

The Premier League club are understood to have agreed to pay Sporting Lisbon an initial 45million euros (£38m) for the 23-year-old, with a further five million euros (£4.2m) in potential add-ons.

"We are very happy to welcome Matheus to Wolverhampton and delighted to add another exciting young talent to Bruno's squad," Shi said.

"Matheus has had two excellent seasons at the top level in Portugal with Sporting and is widely regarded as one of the most exciting prospects in world football, so we are thrilled that he has chosen the Premier League and Wolves as the next step in what we hope will be a fantastic career."

  17. 'It's the best step and I am ready'published at 11:42 British Summer Time 20 August 2022

New signing Matheus Nunes says he wanted to join Wolves "for a long time" after completing his club-record move to Molineux.

The 23-year-old joined Bruno Lage's side for a club-record €45m (£38m) fee and said the manager had a big role in his decision.

"For sure. I’ve wanted to come here for a long time now" he told the club website, external.

"This is the best league in the world for sure and, like I said, it’s the best step for me and I’m ready.

"I’m very excited. For me, I could play tomorrow already, but I can’t because the game is Saturday, but I’m looking forward to it."

Nunes revealed the club convinced him to move and says he also spoke with Wolves' Portuguese players on international duty.

"The coach as well, he really wanted me, and I wanted to play in the Premier League," he added. "I think it’s the right next step for me and I’m very happy to be here."

  18. Nunes a big coup for Wolvespublished at 11:40 British Summer Time 20 August 2022

Wait, hang on, so Wolves have signed a Portuguese player?! That's a maverick move for them!

You'll be telling me Brentford have signed someone Danish next.

    Little joke there.

Matheus Nunes has actually been on the radar of many leading clubs in Europe.

The 23-year-old, who was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, joined Sporting in 2019 and made 101 appearances for the club, scoring eight times

Nunes has eight caps for Portugal and is expected to be part of their squad for this year's World Cup in Qatar.

His breakthrough in Lisbon came in the 2020-21 season when he helped Sporting lift their first Portuguese league title in 19 years.

The transfer fee for Nunes surpasses the £35.6m Wolves paid for forward Fabio Silva in 2020.

  19. Wolves hungry for a dealpublished at 11:38 British Summer Time 20 August 2022

So, yeah, it has been a busy week for Wolves on the transfer front.

After taking just one point from their first two games (and it could easily have been none), Wanderers have pulled the trigger on a deal for highly-rated midfielder Matheus Nunes for a club-record £38m.

To help fund that move, Morgan Gibbs-White has left the club, joining Nottingham Forest for what (I'll be honest here) feels like a pretty extortionate £25m (plus £17m in add ons).

Still, that's modern football for you, right?

Wolves' new record signing is thrown straight in. It will be fascinating to see just how good the kid is (not that his first game is necessarily a fair time to judge).

    Goncalo Guedes starting too.

Fantasy football managers will be pleased to see Ivan Perisic in the Spurs team. Cristian Romero is a big loss, though, for the actual football, not the fantasy stuff.

Richarlison made a big impact at Stamford Bridge last weekend, but he's again having to settle for a spot on the bench.
