Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag tells BBC Sport: "The first win of course brings a lot of joy. We had a difficult start but I am very happy especially for the fans and against Liverpool.

"I enjoyed it from the first minute, it was such a big fight. Both teams made a huge performance and it was a great night especially for the Manchester United fans.

"We had quite a good pre-season, played on a good level then had some setbacks. It was not easy to deal with that but when you start in the process you find out the characters and behaviours of individuals and the team and I was definitely not satisfied with that, especially against Brentford. Today you saw the reaction, that is the attitude. I don't think they can always bring it that far as today but you can always have energy, always focus, always fighting spirit and those demands is a base for the team to winning games.

On Sancho and Rashford: "In their mindset they may think I cannot do all the defending work and threat in offence but today you can see they can do it, it has to be a way of life and the will get stronger. When we press this way it is difficult for opponents to get out and play their football. When you win the ball, you can get in behind, dribble behind, make combinations and it makes football fun for them. That is what I saw and the get the rewards."

"It starts with the mindset, they understand this is that attitude they have to bring, it starts in the preparation. We have to enjoy in the next 24 hours but then focus on the next game. Every game is a battle, there are no easy wins in the Premier League, that is what this team needs to understand. Therefore we need leadership and when we bring that we have good footballers."

  7. 'When we win I am always happy'published at 22:55 British Summer Time 22 August 2022

    Manchester United

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford tells BBC Sport: "It is a great feeling but it was important as a team to get off the mark. Now we can build momentum and on improved performances, we all worked hard today.

"The energy levels were higher, we started the game quicker and now have to use that as a baseline, no matter the opponent.

"Against a team like this opposition, the fans will always get behind us and they pushed us and kept us going.

"I felt I was in some good positions throughout the game, if you are not in the areas you will never get the chances.

"For me it is about my mentality, when I am happy and feel happy will play well, score goals and help the team.

"When we win I am always happy, we have to keep working hard and keep pushing.

"Jadon scored a great goal, he took his time, was composed and hopefully it pushed us both now. We will give everything to reach this level and go beyond it too."

Neil: Our worst Liverpool performance in the last 13 years. I remember us losing 3-1 to Fulham in 2009 when we had no quality and absolutely no fight. We got outclassed by a relegation-threatened team then. The same happened tonight.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BBC Sport: "The start of the game was exactly what everyone excepted, what United fans expected, they were after us. They started slightly more aggressive than us, they could more play the game they wanted than we could play the game we wanted.

"They scored the goal, which we had to defend differently, but that is how it is with goals. In the second part of the first half we were there and caused them problems. We had massive chances.

"At half time we showed the boys a couple of situations we did really well and wanted to do that again but then we conceded the second goal. Then we have to chase the game properly and then you can get in a bit of a rush.

"We scored a goal and we deserved in that period and then you have to force it, we tried, have to admit in the end not good enough and that is why we lost.

"I don't have a lot of arguments, we lost the game. On another day, with more conviction about what we are doing, we can turn it around. That is how it is.

"To play the football we are able to play, we want to fight. We have a good home game on Saturday and Anfield has to be rocking. We have to set the fire and the rhythm.

"We will try absolutely everything that every Liverpool supporter will expect - we will fight for our lives."

In fact, Liverpool have lost more away Premier League games at Old Trafford than at any other venue (17).

  11. 'I am concerned about our situation'published at 22:37 British Summer Time 22 August 2022

    FT: Man Utd 2-1 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp tells Sky Sports: "They were really aggressive in the beginning, it was clear what will happen. They were more aggressive than us and they hit the post early on. They scored the goal and we took over and played the game we wanted to play. We were unlucky with situations against an opponent like United, it would have been helpful to score and go 1-1 at half time.

"The second goal does not help then it was a hectic game after our goal, definitely not the result we wanted.

"When we calmed down we have extreme number of shots for an away game at United. we should use more of these moments, the second half David de Gea made a fantastic save. If you score then the game turns then we did not have enough time or power in the end.

"When you are in a game like this fighting, these guys talk to each other and on the pitch it is a different conversation. It was not a perfect performance, it was clear United would get out of the blocks but we were not 100% ready.

"We had to keep chasing the game and that is not what you want to do. It makes it difficult with their counter-attacking threat. The second goal is hard to take, it was offside, but we have to work with it.

"We are in a tricky situation injury wise, we got through the week with 14, 15 senior players available and now have to make sure they don't get injured. We should have won this game, I know it sounds ridiculous but that is how I saw it.

"I am concerned about our situation, but that is how it is. We prepare for Bournemouth and Newcastle now."

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, speaking to Sky Sports: "We can talk about tactical but it is all about attitude. There was communication and a fighting spirit.

"I wanted a different approach and a different attitude and that is what they brought on the pitch. It is only a start. We can play with much more composure and much more danger. Be a team and have a good spirit - and that is what we saw today.

"It is not always about what I said. I said we have to act and not to talk a lot and make sure you are a team and battle and be brave and give each other options.

"It makes me happy that Rashford and Sancho got the goals. Fernandes took the responsibility and the captaincy encouraged him. He showed leadership with Varane. They made a huge difference. It is not just them; we need more leaders. When you want to win you need leaders and the spirit we showed today.

"I am happy with the performance but we have to bring it every game. Don't just bring it against Liverpool. Every Premier League game is difficult, we need to bring it to every game. It starts, once again, with the spirit.

"I have a squad and we have to use the squad. We play 50-60 games, from game-to-game we will see what team we will pick. I don't have to mention Maguire and Ronaldo - they are amazing players and they will play a role in the future and the short-term future as well.

"We have the right players, I am convinced of that. The window is not closed and you need numbers and also quality."

Liverpool full-back Andy Robertson, speaking to Sky Sports: "We give every team a goal start which is the base of the game, we can't give ourselves an uphill battle. That is what needs to change, we can't keep going behind. In the warm up it was the quietest I have heard this stadium and they wanted something to lift them and we gave them it.

"Two points from nine is not the start we wanted. We need to pick up our performances individually and collectively. We can't keep this going on out there, it is easy to talk about it in the changing room but we have to go out and do it. We can't keep conceding goals.

"They started better than us today. It needs to change."

Jack: Great game. United - and particularly Rashford - played really well. Liverpool deserved to lose simply for wearing those horrible magic eye shirts.

Ian: So I assume Liverpool are in crisis. That’s how this works, right?

Eamonn: United thoroughly deserved that with a quality performance. I can't help but think Liverpool are suffering a hangover from last season, having failed to win the Premier League or Champions League after such a brilliant campaign.

Manchester United forward Jadon Sancho tells Sky Sports: "It means a lot. Our first two games didn't go so well and had it turn it around today.

"Last week hurt a lot and we knew we had to bounce back and tonight we showed the fans what we can do.

"I didn't realise how much time I had, but once I dropped the defender I needed the composure to finish.

"It means a lot to all of us, you can see how the fans are reacting. We got the three points but on to the next one.

"We just have to produce like today in every single game. Happy we got the three points and we move on."

Even at this stage, the points gap feels big, with the quality of Man City.

You just don't expect a really poor start from this Liverpool team - they set such high standards but they're a million miles from them. They have to fix it quickly.
