  1. Lage says Costa brought 'energy' to Wolvespublished at 17:27 British Summer Time 1 October 2022

Bruno Lage says Diego Costa's arrival came at a good time to energise the Wolves squad during the international break.

"Everyone is very good, with good energy," said Lage. "It was good to have these weeks for training. One of the things that comes with the energy was Diego.

"All of the team, after Sasa [Kalajdzic] and Raul [Jimenez]’s injuries, now they have a striker in the team, they can see the good vibes and the good energy comes.

"He didn’t work the first week with us but after that started training with the team and gave a lot of energy. We are a completely different team when we have a striker in front of us. It’s not just the value of that player, but other players can give more when we have a striker in front of us.

"From my first day I was talking about bringing in a striker. First we brought Sasa and now Diego. We want competition in the team and different profiles. The good thing is they didn’t train together but if Raul is fit, both can play at the same time."

Costa is on the bench today.

  2. 'We knew we had to start fast'published at 17:26 British Summer Time 1 October 2022

    Fulham 1-4 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle goal scorer Callum Wilson speaking with BBC Sport: "It's a nice feeling [to get the win]. The performances have been good of late. Unfortunately, I have not been part of that but the lads have been putting in great performances and just didn't have three points to show for it, but everything came together today.

"The performance today was about mindset. Today we knew we had to start fast against a team that have been playing well and thankfully we have come out on top to get the three points."

On returning from injury to score: "There was an embarrassing miss from me at first, showing a bit of rust, but I was happy to get on the score sheet.

"When you are out injured you are very disappointed, obviously, but you can't feel sorry for yourself. You try to pick yourself up, work hard on your rehab and today I was able to help the team get three points."

On his reaction to being substituted: "No striker, when your team is 4-0 up, is going to be happy to come off. I understand the thinking but once you take emotion out of it you understand it.

"That's my mentality, I always want to score. I am playing catch-up, so today was a perfect opportunity to get some goals behind me."

What next for Newcastle?: "We need to make sure we are picking up wins rather than draws. It's a case of one game at a time and we will see where we are."

  3. 'I know I'm judged on results'published at 17:26 British Summer Time 1 October 2022

David Moyes says West Ham's start to the season has not been good enough and results need to improve.

After finishing sixth and seventh respectively in the past two seasons, the Hammers sit in the bottom three after just one win from seven in the Premier League.

Moyes said: "I think if you look back a couple of years, if you said West Ham had gone this far up the table you’d say that’s really good.

"We want to challenge there. We want to stay there. We haven’t got off to as good a start as we’ve wanted. We’ve played more games than any other Premier League club, we started the season with one fit centre-back and we’re trying to integrate seven or eight players - so there are reasons.

"But I know I’m judged on results and they need to get better."

Diego Costa could make his Wolves debut here, but I think we have to be realistic about what to expect from him.

This isn't the Costa we saw at Chelsea, at the peak of his powers. He is 33 now and has not played a competitive game this year.

Wolves frustrate me because they are a really good team that just doesn't score enough goals. I could be wrong, but I don't see Costa changing that.

West Ham are not exactly prolific either, but I think they deserve more points than they've picked up so far and this could be the day where their luck turns.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-0

  6. 'I think he made me happy'published at 17:22 British Summer Time 1 October 2022

    FT: Liverpool 3-3 Brighton

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi speaking to BBC Sport: "A crazy game. I am happy and proud for my players and my club. There was a possibility to win the game but Liverpool is a fantastic team. I knew before the game it could be difficult and it was very difficult.

"Of course the point for us is really important because Liverpool at the end of the day is Liverpool but we had a lot of chances to score the goals and if we had won the game I wouldn't have felt like we had stolen anything here.

"In that moment I didn't think we had to win the game. It is 90 minutes plus additional time at Anfield.

"[On Leandro Trossard] When he was in the national team I sent a message to him and I told him he needs to increase the number of his goals and I think he made me happy!

"We have to learn how to improve with the ball possession and to increase our ball speed and it is up to us to decide it. It is really hard to control the game in the Premier League - only Manchester City is doing that. Our target is to start to control much more of the game."

  7. 'There's character'published at 17:21 British Summer Time 1 October 2022

    FT: Crystal Palace 1-2 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Graham Potter: "We're delighted with the result. It's a tough place to come. I thought we started quite well but conceded from the first action into the box.

"Credit to the boys, they recovered well and did not let their heads go down. It was nice to get an equaliser and get back in the game.

"We had to survive moments as they are a good side with dangerous players. To be a goal down and come away with three points is fantastic so credit to the players.

"There's character, that's for sure. They could've felt sorry for themselves after conceding the goal but the players stood up all the way through.

"There was a collective spirit among the players. We are delighted with the three points."

On whether Thiago Silva could have been sent off: "I thought it was touch and go. The fact he was quite far from the goal saved him and it could've gone the other way.

    "It's a close one, I can understand Patrick's [Vieira] frustration. It's a 50-50 one."

  8. 'It was a tough call'published at 17:20 British Summer Time 1 October 2022

    FT: Bournemouth 0-0 Brentford

    Bournemouth

Speaking to BBC Sport, Bournemouth caretaker boss Gary O'Neill said: "I liked our mentality. I liked our organisation and our endeavour. I was disappointed with certain moments and we need to be better with the ball. We had opportunities to hurt them but then we had sloppy turnovers. It was not the best performance but it's another clean sheet against a good side. We take a point but I'm a bit disappointed."

On the penalty decision: "It was a tough call to be honest. I thought we would get it. Once the referee gets sent to review it on camera, I thought we were going to get it. It's tight, he loses control and the defender slips and I think he catches Zemura but it's a real tight call. It seems to be the way it has gone a bit with us with VAR reviews in the last four games.

"It could have gone our way but let's review what we did and we need to be better with our moments on the ball. It's tough to score goals in the Premier League. In every other game, we posed a threat. Scoring goals is the toughest part and there are reasons today why we didn't threaten as much as we should have."

  9. 'We have to improve'published at 17:19 British Summer Time 1 October 2022

    FT: Liverpool 3-3 Brighton

    Liverpool

Liverpool defender Joel Matip: "Absolutely not happy. Not a good performance. Brighton played really well and made our life quite hard.

"It wasn't our game and it started from the beginning. We have to improve.

"It was better but we are still not happy with our performance, especially at home. We expect more from ourselves.

"It's great, even in not a good game for us, he [Roberto Firmino] scores. That's brilliant. He [Alisson] was there to save our backs again and hopefully he does not have as many saves to make in the future.

"I don't care who is coming, we just have to step up and do better."

Tom: Milner should not be playing 30 mins at left back in 2022.

Tunde: If you’ve got to be honest, Liverpool, no chance this season unless something extraordinary happens. Attacks have got to do better, defence seriously need to work harder. Can’t always put blame on wing backs, the centre backs need to be looking at themselves.

  11. 'A long time coming'published at 17:17 British Summer Time 1 October 2022

    Fulham 1-4 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manger Eddie Howe speaking to BBC Sport: "It has been a long time coming. We have had a long wait for the second win of the season.

"Right from the start we had a good feeling, with good energy, and created chances early on. Obviously the red card made it easier but I am very pleased with the players' response. Their attitude - we wanted more, we weren't happy with what we had, always trying to score.

"It's been a very difficult two weeks, obviously we have had the international break with players going away, but we have also had a bit of illness in the camp, so it's been a mixed two weeks but it didn't show in our performance."

Newcastle controlled the game as you would expect with Fulham going down to 10 men. It was the right decision, it was a terrible tackle from Chalobah. They scored some good goals and Almiron was very, very good. Good win and a good performance.

Anon: Liverpool can't seem to be able to defend at all. Rangers will fancy their chances on Tuesday night in the Champions League!

Stevo: Now I'm no expert but I know the main areas that Liverpool need to work on....defending from the defenders and the main striker scoring.

Tom: Right, that makes finishing in the top 4 our aim this season; it's going to be tough as we look way off the pace at the minute. FSG's obsession with being net spend champions will be the story of this season.

  14. 'We will work hard to perfect style'published at 17:10 British Summer Time 1 October 2022

    FT: Liverpool 3-3 Brighton

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton defender Lewis Dunk: "Great finishing [from Leandro Trossard]. He probably could have had one more as well but congratulations to him on the hat-trick and to get three goals at Anfield is not easy, eh?

"They are world-class players and difficult to deal with. They scored three goals so we are frustrated with that but we'll take a point.

"We've not had long as a group but we've done a little bit, not too much. We did well out there.

"It will be a transition period so we will work as hard as we can to bring [Roberto de Zerbi's] style into our play. It's been enjoyable so far. It will take time to perfect it but we will make sure we do."

I think the huge wage given to Salah has disrupted the whole equilibrium of this Liverpool team. The form of Van Dijk suggests he is unhappy at his current lot.

    Southampton 1-2 Everton

    Everton

Everton goalscorer Conor Coady: "First half we played really well but lacked a bit of a ruthless edge in the final third. I thought we deserved the three points as we were fantastic bar that little spell. It’s another win to build on."

On returning keeper Jordan Pickford: "He’s top-drawer, I’ve spoken about him a million times even before I’ve come to the club, about how incredible a keeper is.

"When we lose him, he’s a massive miss – when Asmir Begovic came in he did fantastic but you saw what Jordan brought today, he’s an outstanding keeper and long may that continue for us."

On his own equaliser: "My eyes lit up a little bit at the back post when I saw it pop down. It was important we got it and that we bounced back pretty quickly from going behind. We work a lot on second-phase set-pieces, trying to make sure we do them right, so it’s pleasing when something like that comes off for us."

  18. 'This result has to push us to do much better'published at 17:03 British Summer Time 1 October 2022

    Arsenal 3-1 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte speaking to BBC Sport: "It is difficult for us [to take] because in the first half we failed the possibility to win the game.

"We had important chances to score. We made many mistakes in the last passes, we had them under pressure and had a lot of space and had to exploit them much better.

"In the second half we conceded again - we could do much better.

"After a few minutes it was a red card and they had the game handed to them.

"In England it is always difficult to understand. There is not the same situation in different circumstances. The referee decided on the red, I don't want to comment [on his decision].

"But for sure the red card changed the game. In the starting XI we had three strikers and this totally changed the situation. We needed to drop the strikers to have a good balance.

"We had to try to continue to work and to take this result in the right way to push us to do much better. On Tuesday we have another game in the Champions League. This defeat has to be a big push for us to try to go forward in this competition."

    FT: Arsenal 3-1 Tottenham

    Arsenal

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka speaking to BBC Sport: "After seven years at the club and after what happened three years ago I never thought I would speak about this [having a song sung about him by the home fans]. It makes me very proud. As long as I’m here I’ll give everything for this football club. It makes me proud because it was hard work to get here..

"Thomas [Partey] and me have a great relationship. He is a lovely guy with a lot of quality and you can see that week by week. I am so happy to have him close to me and you can see results on the pitch.

"Gabriel Martinelli has a lot to be one of the best. He goes 100mph. He has to push himself with how far he can go. He has the team and everything around the help him.

"When Mikel [Arteta] came three years ago he said he needed time and you can see the results. We have a big squad with a lot of potential and we are showing it on the pitch.

"We have a different type of spirit and mentality in the team and you can see that."
