  1. 'Week we've had has been fantastic'published at 17:23 British Summer Time 8 October 2022

    FT: Chelsea 3-0 Wolves

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Graham Potter: "It's exciting. It's been a really strong week. It's not easy, going Wednesday and Saturday. Credit to the players. It's a strong performance, especially in the first half. We had to hang on a bit in the second half but overall we deserved to win.

"I pick the right team to [try to] win. The schedule is tight so there's not a load of recovery time. We have to try to select the best team to give us the chance to perform well."

On the difference to being at Brighton: "More media, more interest in the club. The games are different. We've had two Champions League games. The first was surreal - you don't really know the players and you're preparing them for a Champions League game. It's still football. There are still ambitious players who want to be in the team. So far I'm really enjoying it.

"Premier League players want to play every week. You can only pick 11 and you have a squad of 20 so there's always disappointment. How you react to that as a group is really important. That's my job. All you can do is communicate as honestly as you can. it's my decision to make the team selection.

"The week we've just had has been fantastic. We've made some steps with the group with how we're acting. The attitude of players has been really good. Their effort to what we've been trying to do is fantastic. They're a good group to work with.

    "A happy afternoon."

On leaving Brighton: "It was a bit of a whirlwind. You spend three years somewhere thinking about that club and it changes really quickly. It helps to win. We play AC Milan on Tuesday, a fantastic game at San Siro. I'm looking forward to it.

"It's pretty much three games a week until the World Cup but we have a big squad so we won't complain."

  2. 'We got too comfortable'published at 17:21 British Summer Time 8 October 2022

    FT: Bournemouth 2-1 Leicester

    Leicester City

Brendan Rodgers speaking to MOTD: "It's a really disappointing result for us. We controlled most of the game in the first half but maybe we got too comfortable and you cannot get comfortale in this league. In the second half, we weren't aggressive enough and that invites pressure."

On the loss of momentum: "It was great against Nottingham Forest on Monday where our play had everything in it that we want: intensity, pressure, aggression, desire. The players’ attitude was good in this game but technically we weren't right, we misplaced too many passes and made mistakes. We never did enough against the ball or with the ball."

On the pressure he is facing: "It’s not about pressure. I know if you’re in the bottom three, there will always be pressure - I understand that. For me though, it’s about focusing on process of getting the results. Ultimately we lost this game but we've got two home games and we really need to focus on them."

  4. 'Spurs have not got going'published at 17:19 British Summer Time 8 October 2022

    Brighton v Tottenham (17:30 BST)

This is a hard one because of how well Brighton are playing - tricky Leandro Trossard got a treble at Anfield, and Roberto de Zerbi made a mark and showed he is a front-foot coach in his first game in charge.

Tottenham have not really got going yet this season, in terms of playing as well as we know they can do, but the way the Seagulls are likely to play might suit Spurs.

    Prediction: 1-1

Sutton's full predictions v Scotland defender Ryan Porteous.

  5. 'We are fuming'published at 17:18 British Summer Time 8 October 2022

    FT: Newcastle 5-1 Brentford

    Brentford

Brentford boss Thomas Frank, speaking to MOTD: "Last year, even though we were playing in the most difficult league, I never thought we would ever lose five on the bounce, we did.

"In general I never thought we would concede five goals, we did today. In life and football it is about how you respond to set backs.

"If you want to win football matches it is relatively important you don't make one, two, three, or four mistakes leading to goals. To make four mistakes then you lose football games and basically that is it.

"I am a big believer that if you lose 5-1 then don't complain but first goals in games can shift the momentum. I was looking at our stats that when we went in front in the Premier League 13 times we won 11 them.

"We are of course fuming. I can feel my anger bursting around inside me. It is the same as the players and we will bounce back."

  6. 'Another top effort'published at 17:16 British Summer Time 8 October 2022

    FT: Bournemouth 2-1 Leicester

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth caretaker boss Gary O'Neil speaking to Match of the Day: "The boys put in another top effort. It was harsh at half-time to be 1-0 down as we'd played well and had big chances but got punished from the only real one Leicester had. I told them we needed to believe and keep going. We tweaked a couple of things at half-time to be slightly more aggressive. It went our way in the end and I am really pleased."

On the confidence in his side: "I think the boys believe. I don’t think you can come back from two down at Nottingham Forest and 1-0 down to Leicester if you don’t believe. need to be sensible as newly-promoted team. We were slightly less sensible in the second half and it went our way."

On prospective new owner Bill Foley who was watching in the stands: "It's a great first day for him and I'm sure he enjoyed it. The full focus for me though is on prepping for the next one."

  7. 'Haaland is on fire'published at 17:15 British Summer Time 8 October 2022

    FT: Man City 4-0 Southampton

    Manchester City

Manchester City goalscorer Riyad Mahrez, speaking to BBC Sport: "It was a difficult game, we made it easy by scoring early and then we controlled. We had a lot of chances to score more but we didn't. We didn't concede much, it was a controlled game.

"Haaland is part of our team, he is our striker. Like any other striker, if we can find him it's perfect because he is on fire. If not, there are a lot of players and everyone can make a difference. We have to keep going with the momentum."

Anon: Remember when Scotty P got sacked for losing 9-0 at Anfield and then saying his players weren't good enough for the Prem? Yeah, it wasn't the result that got him sacked. Please give O'Neil that contract before he gets snapped up.

  9. 'Guimaraes was outstanding'published at 17:12 British Summer Time 8 October 2022

    FT: Newcastle 5-1 Brentford

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to MOTD: "Today was a tough game. Brentford make it very difficult for you. We had a bit of a slow start but the first goal changed everything from our perspective.

On Bruno Guimaraes: "He was outstanding. we really missed him when he was out. Quality player who helps us in every phase.

"If you look where the goals came from today our intensity and pressing, we forced them into errors and we got rewarded for that.

"Overall a great day for us."

On Almiron: "It is all about building consistency to his game but he has performed brilliantly off the ball and now he is adding goals to that."

  10. Head-to-head statspublished at 17:11 British Summer Time 8 October 2022

    Brighton v Tottenham (17:30 BST)

Brighton have won two of the past three Premier League meetings, one more than in their first seven encounters in the division.

Albion can win back-to-back games against Spurs for the first time in competitive matches.

However, Spurs won this fixture 2-0 in March and are looking for consecutive top-flight away victories against Brighton for the first time since a run of three between 1980 and 1982.

  11. 'Man City look devastating'published at 17:10 British Summer Time 8 October 2022

    FT: Man City 4-0 Southampton

    Micah Richards
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Man City just look devastating. I know we always talk about ‘do they need a striker?’

Erling Haaland. His movement and the space he provides is just sublime.

Going forward, I don't think they can improve right now. They are so good and so efficient.

  12. 'The players have been really impressive'published at 17:09 British Summer Time 8 October 2022

    FT: Chelsea 3-0 Wolves

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Graham Potter: "Credit to Wolves they came out and gave us more of a test in the second half, we saw that period out and we manged to score a nice goal. Nice at the end for Armando [Broja] to score.

"We want to score more than one, we were playing so well and if you have that performance level the goals will come. Just a case of keeping that going and keeping the performance good. The effort was fantastic and they've worked hard in training this week."

On Broja's goal: "I've been here three or four weeks so taking no credit, great finish nice pass too and whenever he comes on he works hard for the team. He's had to be patient but he's bene working hard in training and it's nice for him to score."

On players responding to him as manager: "I've said from the start I've been impressed with how open, honest and responsible they are. It's difficult to keep the same XI with the schedule but there is an element of consistency to how we play. Really happy with the boys and how we've recovered. We go again on Tuesday.

"Winning games helps so we look forward to the games, it's about hard work, it's being together, that stuff is important but the guys have been really impressive."

    FT: Newcastle 5-1 Brentford

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe to Sky Sports: "We were pleased with today. It as a really tough game and we knew they would make it difficult for us. We had a slow start but responded to that with the first goal and that changed it for us.

"Bruno [Guimaraes] is top quality in every aspect, his personality and performances on the pitch. He was outstanding today.

"We have had a number of injuries, we have managed to ride that storm. Hopefully a very good day for us."

  15. 'Great work from Howe'published at 17:06 British Summer Time 8 October 2022

    FT: Newcastle 5-1 Brentford

    John Bennett
BBC Final Score at St James' Park

I was here last season for Eddie Howe’s first game in charge against Brentford and today’s emphatic win against the Bees 11 months later illustrates the great work he’s done since taking over.

Jacob Murphy, Miguel Almiron and Joe Willock look like different players. But on the year anniversary of Newcastle’s takeover a star signing was the star man; Bruno Guimaraes got a deafening ovation when he came off.

  17. 'We're all together in this'published at 17:02 British Summer Time 8 October 2022

    Chelsea 3-0 Wolves

    Chelsea

Chelsea goalscorer Kai Havertz: "In general, I'm very happy. 3-0 is a good result in front of our fans. Good atmosphere and good game. It’s always a great feeling to score. We needed that goal before half-time. It’s good to go into the changing room at 1-0.

"We have a big squad, a lot of good players. We’re all together in this. Today we had a lot of changes but everyone is involved in every game. We have to be positive, even those who don’t play. Armando gets a chance and scores straight away.

"Tuesday is the next one, a big game in the Champions League. We have to recover well and go again."
