    Leeds United

Speaking to Sky Sports, Leeds boss Jesse Marsch said: "In general, the first half was very good from us and it was one of our best halves of football. We were on top for the game and the shame was we weren't up by two.

"They get the goal and that allowed them to make adjustments at half time. We weren't able to make enough chances. It's a step in the right direction and I'm impressed by this team, no doubt.

"We are young and we need to keep maturing and understand how to manage teams in this league. The players are so clever and are really experienced but we are moving in the right direction with this team. It doesn't feel we are going in the right direction because we haven't been getting the results lately but I believe in this team.

"Patrick [Bamford] needs to add sharpness and game readiness and we know he will be part of the solution to us finding goals. This league is difficult and every game is difficult. At away matches you have to perform at your best level to have a chance."

Chris Sutton reckons this is going to be a 4-1 win for Arsenal.

"Jurgen Klopp's side were very comfortable against Rangers in the Champions League on Tuesday but they weren't tested defensively. Here, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus won't give them a minute's peace," he says.

"While the Gunners are playing well and are full of confidence, things still aren't right at Liverpool as far as I can see."

Ali: Arsenal been punching above. We should honestly batter these lot. It’s either we’re slapping them or we have an early sending off and we get a hiding. No middle ground. No scored draws. It’s a victory by a large margin.

Sody: Yeah Liverpool have gone with a front 4 just like they did in the Champions League. They’re not sitting back. It’s going to be an explosive game. Can’t wait.

Manager Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool are still trying to rediscover their best form, but added that "consistency" is the key to doing that.

After a mixed start to the season, the Reds are now unbeaten in three games, but Klopp said there is still plenty of work to do.

"We are still a work in progress to find a way back. So you cannot say we're back," said the German. "We need consistency.

"I’m not interested in this short-term diagnosis. We have to be good until we are outstanding.

"I know Arsenal, Rangers away and then Manchester City - what can I say? Yes, we are through the tunnel and I can see the light. I am very positive, I am very optimistic. These players are outstanding still, but we have to perform.

"For us, it's more important we become unpredictable again so we need different systems for that. We have to choose which one is the best for us against the next opponent. We have to be more unpredictable."

  5. West Ham are 'going in the right direction'published at 16:20 British Summer Time 9 October 2022

    FT: West Ham 3-1 Fulham

    West Ham United

West Ham boss David Moyes to BBC Match of the Day: "I thought we deserved the win. We started slow, maybe an impact of playing on Thursday, but we grew into the game as it went on.

"Dan James hitting the bar galvanised us and the crowd. We're still trying to improve a lot of things, but we're doing a lot of good things as well.

"I thought for the penalty that the referee had warned them two or three times, but in truth he should probably have given it the first time. We had a chat in the managers meeting to say you couldn't put two arms round the player. It was a stonewall penalty - it was more of an American Football challenge.

"I thought when Gianluca [Scamacca] didn't celebrate I thought he thought it was offside not handball, but I didn't see his hand involved in it in any way. It shows he can score different goals - he had two great chances with his head - and he may have taken the hardest of them all. It was a deft finish. Sometimes when you are possible offside centre forwards don't often go and finish the job off but he did.

"I thought there we bits today that was really good. There were bits I didn't enjoy but it is going in the right direction at the moment. We are playing much better."

    Fulham

Fulham defender Tim Ream: "There were a couple of decisions and a couple of mistakes that ultimately cost us the match. It is something we'll have to look at and rectify ahead of next week.

"We'll see if decisions like the penalty are going to be called consistently this season, hopefully so, and we'll get the benefits of that.

"The majority of us expected Scamacca's goal to be ruled out - Bernd Leno pointed out that is why he wasn't celebrating. There are swings and roundabouts though, hopefully one goes in our favour.

"We just need to be more consistent in the way we move the ball. We did it very well for stretches of the match but not for as often as we would have liked to create problems.

"We're not a down, negative bunch. We've done a lot of good things and it is time like this we need to lean on that. The matches don't get any easier so we need to wrap our head round that."

  7. 'We needed that win'published at 16:19 British Summer Time 9 October 2022

    FT: Crystal Palace 2-1 Leeds

    Crystal Palace

Speaking to Sky Sports, Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira said: "It's a good win and we needed that win. It wasn't pretty but we needed some different ingredients from the last couple of games. We worked hard and rolled up our sleeves and, at the end, we score that goal which is good for us.

"We wanted to play well from the back and they made it difficult for us with their pressing. In the first half hour, our decision-making from the back wasn't the best and then we lost confidence. All the credit to the players because going 1-0 down and to fight back and get the win, they worked well and they deserved it. In the last couple of games we didn't get what we deserved but today was a good win for us.

"We played more directly in the second half and I'm pleased with the players. Our performance lately were quite good and the only thing that was missing was the win, so we need to find the right balance. We won today but we will try to improve as a team."

  8. 'One of the best 45 minutes we've had'published at 16:19 British Summer Time 9 October 2022

    FT: Crystal Palace 2-1 Leeds

    Leeds United

Leeds boss Jesse Marsch, speaking to Match of the Day: "The first half was one of the best 45 minutes we’ve had since I’ve been here. It was a shame to go in 1-1 at half time.

"When you go through matches we have had we have had moments where we are on top of things but don’t score enough goals.

"But the first half was really good and we were unlucky to go in 1-1.

"I feel like the first half we had a bunch of good performances and the team was really clear. The game was there to be taken at 1-0 and if we got the second we would be talking about a different scoreline.

"For the second half they made some adjustments so we had to make some adjustments too. Then the game was in the balance a bit.

"In total this is a step in the right direction for me. Of course we have to get results along the way but we are doing OK. We just have to keep pushing."

    Arsenal v Liverpool (16:30 BST)

Liverpool's tally of 10 points is their lowest after seven games of a Premier League campaign since 2014-15 under Brendan Rodgers.

Nobody has ever won the title after a start like that.

The Reds could fail to win any of their opening four Premier League away games for the first time since 2010-11 under Roy Hodgson.

Jurgen Klopp's side have the worst first-half record in the division. They have trailed at the break in five of their seven games and have failed to score a first-half goal in their three away fixtures.

Arsenal's tally of 21 points after eight matches is their third-best start to a Premier League season.

They have twice had 22 points at this stage, although did not win the title either time - finishing second in 2005 and third in 2008.

The Gunners have won seven successive Premier League home games, including four this season.

Liverpool midfielder Arthur Melo is set for months on the sidelines as he needs surgery on an injury sustained during training.

The Brazil international, 26, is on a season-long loan from Juventus but has only made one substitute appearance for the Reds.

He is now reportedly expected to be out for three to four months, while would rule him out of the World Cup.

West Ham goalscorer Jarrod Bowen to BBC Match of the Day: "It was not very fun to play in. The way we started wasn't very good for us. We dug in really well as a group and in the end we started to control the game. It was a great three points."

On Gianluca Scamacca: "It was a great finish, that is what he does. Even the ball through from Lucas [Paqueta] was great. It was a really important goal for us. It was a long wait, you never know fully know if you can celebrate, but you saw the celebrations when it stood. We saw both of their quality today, you can see the group starting to gel as a team."

  14. Arteta backs White for World Cup squadpublished at 16:08 British Summer Time 9 October 2022

    Arsenal v Liverpool (16:30 BST)

    White and ArtetaImage source, .

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has backed Gunners defender Ben White "to make the step up" to England's World Cup squad.

White, 24, was a surprise omission from England boss Gareth Southgate's Nations League squad to face Italy and Germany last month.

But his World Cup selection hopes for Qatar this winter were boosted by right-back Kyle Walker's groin injury.

White - who has four caps - has mostly played right-back for Arsenal this season - including today - despite being used as a centre-half last campaign.

"Ben would be very comfortable playing on the right side of a back three as well as in the middle or as a full-back," said the Spaniard.

"If you ask me if he is ready to make that step [to England], then the answer is yes because he is a very confident boy, he gives you absolutely everything, he is always available and he has the courage to play under real pressure."

We've got our old Arsenal back. I don't know whether we conquered that feeling we used to get at Highbury.

It feels like our home now. That game against Spurs was magnificent.

If we can beat Liverpool that's a huge gap, 14 points, and it sends a huge message that we can go head to head.

    West Ham United

West Ham goalscorer Jarrod Bowen: "It was tough, they started really well and we didn't come out of the blocks at all. We dug in and got back into the game and we played some nice stuff. We've won all three games since the international break so confidence is high.

"We've got to be better at starting games because from being behind it is an uphill battle. It is down to us as players to start straight out of the blocks."

On Gianluca Scamacca: "You never know if you're going to be offside or if you've handballed but you saw the celebrations when the goal was given. It was a great finish - him and Lucas [Paqueta] have definitely played their part. If you look at his [Scamacca's] performances he's definitely settled in now."

Leeds have shown that they are capable of upsetting the top sides in this division. Getting consistency and the forward players in better positions over time means they will be fine. They are better than some of the teams in the division right now but that was probably the right outcome today.

  19. Klopp denies seven-year cyclepublished at 16:01 British Summer Time 9 October 2022

    Arsenal v Liverpool (16:30 BST)

    KloppImage source, .

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has rejected the claim that Liverpool's poor form is down to his management style creating a seven-year cycle.

He has been in charge of the Reds for seven years. His previous two jobs ended in the seventh season - with Mainz in the second tier and Borussia Dortmund just squeezing into the Europa League qualifiers.

"The situation was really different. A seven-year spell was not planned or because I lost energy," Klopp said.

"Mainz needed a change, players left us for the Bundesliga so they needed a fresh start.

"I went directly to Dortmund and it was all fine. Iit was just a situation that players constantly got bought by other clubs.

"It was a really hard job to do, constantly making two steps back."

"I can understand that I left after seven years and now we are in a difficult situation, but, if you think twice about it, you realise the situation is completely different."
