The last time Manchester United encountered Julen Lopetegui, it was in the semi-finals of the Europa League in 2020.

The tournament was completed in Germany following the COVID outbreak.

Sevilla beat Wolves in the quarter-final (that seems a long time ago), before coming from behind to beat United in the semi and then Inter Milan in the final.

Lopetegui made a winning start to his time as Wolves boss, with Rayan Ait-Nouri's 95th-minute winner giving them three points at Goodison in a basement battle with Everton.

The Spaniard will now be hoping to build on the hope and optimism provided from that in what is sure to be a much tougher test against a Manchester United team that look to be turning a corner of their own.

United also won their first game after the restart, putting three unanswered goals past Nottingham Forest on the 27th.

Before we get properly stuck into today's Premier League action, there is one other story to highlight from last night - Cristiano Ronaldo's move to Saudi Arabia club Al-Nassr.

The Portugal captain is a free agent after leaving Manchester United following a controversial interview in which he criticised the club.

Ronaldo will reportedly receive the biggest football salary in history , externalat more than £177m per year.

The 37-year-old says he is "eager to experience a new football league in a different country".

Ronaldo added: "I am fortunate that I have won everything I set out to win in European football and feel now that this is the right moment to share my experience in Asia."

Al Nassr - nine-time Saudi Pro League champions - described the signing as "history in the making".

    BBC Sport

Brentford are not expecting to have any update on striker Ivan Toney today.

Toney was stretchered off before the end of last night’s 2-0 win at West Ham, when the forward scored the opener and created the second.

Brentford are waiting for the swelling on the knee injury to reduce before the 26-year-old has a scan.

Manager Thomas Frank is due at a press conference on Sunday to preview his side’s home game against Liverpool on Monday.

It's team of the year time.

Using the Opta index - which grades players across a wide pool of metrics - we have formulated a team that uses data to support the selections. With a plethora of extra insights from a database that contains every touch in the Premier League this year, it's a resource that helps us to rely on much more than memory and individual opinion.

There's just one rule: The 11 selected players must have appeared in both of the seasons that have made up 2022.

So that's Erling Haaland out of the running! But who did make the cut? Here you go...

    Wolves v Man Utd (12:30GMT)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport at Molineux

It will be fascinating to see how Alejandro Garnacho fares this afternoon.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is keen to bring in a striking reinforcement during next month's transfer window to plug the gap created by Cristiano Ronaldo's exit.

However, Garnacho has an opportunity to show Ten Hag he can do the job.

The young Argentine scored at Fulham just before the World Cup and was lively when he came on as a substitute against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.

Erik ten Hag has just said in his pre-match press duties that Marcus Rashford is not in today's starting XI because of "internal disciplinary" reasons. He did not elaborate much further, other than to say it was "our rules".

  12. World Cup winner, hero, icon and legendpublished at 11:46 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2022

Brazil legend Pele, who has died aged 82, is widely regarded as the greatest footballer of all time, the iconic sporting figure for a country that regards itself as the game's spiritual home.

Pele's greatness can be measured by the simple fact that he could make football a spectacle of natural grace and beauty when he missed as much as when he scored.

One of the game's first global personalities, he scored a world record 1,281 goals in 1,363 games and layered his brilliance across a career spanning from his start as a teenager with Santos to a finish as a money-spinner at New York Cosmos.

And wherever football is played, the name of Pele will synonymous with it.

The last time I saw Pele in person he was behind the counter of a Subway branch in Central London, struggling to fit the salad fillings into a sandwich.

It was March 2015, and no, the Brazilian football legend had not fallen on hard times - it was a publicity stunt courtesy of the US fast food company, with whom the man known as King Pele to his fellow countrymen had one of his many post-career endorsement deals.

By then Pele and I had already met a bunch of times, which was enough to trigger a wide smile when he clocked me among the scrum of journalists. I was fortunate enough to secure a one-to-one interview, but my happiest memory of that afternoon was that Pele looked fit and healthy at the age of 74.

"You had everyone worried with that hospital business, King," I told him.

"Did you forget I was born in the town of Tres Coracoes (Three Hearts in Portuguese)? It's difficult to put someone who has 'three hearts' in the ground," he answered, with a laugh.

Obituary: Brazil legend Pele dies aged 82

Before both of last night's games tributes were paid to Brazilian legend Pele, the greatest footballer of all time.

Applause rang out at both grounds, with Liverpool players - including Brazilian keeper Alisson - placing a bouquet of flowers in the centre circle at Anfield. The iconic image of Pele embracing Bobby Moore shown on the big screen at London Stadium.

Premier League and English Football League clubs will wear black armbands and hold a minute's applause today.

The Scottish Professional Football League has also suggested all clubs pay their respects with a minute's applause or "other appropriate gesture".

Three-time World Cup winner Pele passed away on Thursday at the age of 82.

Brazil has declared three days of national mourning as tributes pour in.

Wolves' new boss Julen Lopetegui has been familiarising himself with Molineux this morning. He'll be saying a proper hello to the Wolves fans in a bit.

Manchester United gaffer Erik ten Hag has been having a glance around the place too. Did someone get a new roll neck for Christmas? Very dapper.

  16. Team news - Nunes starts for Wolves, Rashford benchedpublished at 11:30 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2022

Wolves v Manchester United (12.30 GMT)

Julen Lopetegui makes just one change to the Wolves side which won so dramatically at Everton on Boxing Day in his first league game in charge.

Matheus Nunes comes into the three man midfield, replacing Joe Hodge who is on the bench.

New signing Matheus Cunha will officially become a Wolves player on January 1, so is not available quite yet.

Wolves XI: Sa; Bueno, Kilman, Collins, Semedo; Moutinho, Neves, Nunes; Podence, Costa, Hwang.

Subs: Sarkic, Ait-Nouri, B. Traore, Jimenez, Guedes, Toti, Jonny, A. Traore, Hodge.

Only one change for Manchester United as well, with Alejandro Garnacho starting ahead of Marcus Rashford.

It is Garnacho's second league start for Man Utd, following the 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa earlier this season.

Kobbie Mainoo, a 17-year-old academy midfielder, is on the bench for the second time in a Premier League game.

Man Utd XI: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Shaw, Malacia; Casemiro, Eriksen; Antony, Fernandes, Garnacho; Martial.

Subs: Heaton, Lindelof, Maguire, Rashford, Fred, Williams, Van de Beek, Elanga, Mainoo.

    Poor Wout Faes.

He had a night he won't forget for a long time at Anfield. With Leicester leading 1-0 at Liverpool thanks to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's goal, the Foxes centre-back conspired to score two own goals in the space of seven minutes to turn the game around and ultimately give the Reds victory.

His first OG was bizarre - a looping slice over Danny Ward - the second was unfortunate as he chased a Darwin Nunez effort that hit the post.

It was a big win for Liverpool, though, who remain in hot pursuit of the top four. For Leicester, it was their second loss since the restart and keeps them looking over their shoulder.

Let's have a quick recap of what went down last night, starting at the London Stadium...

Things are looking pretty grim for David Moyes and the Hammers right now. They suffered their fifth straight loss as Brentford staged a ruthlessly efficient counter-attacking display.

Ivan Toney put the visitors ahead with his 12th league goal of the season, before Josh DaSilva doubled the lead.

The Hammers were booed by a frustrated London Stadium crowd, with this defeat keeping them only one point above the relegation zone.

The Bees are up to ninth, but game ended badly for them with leading scorer Toney taken off the pitch on a stretcher after suffering what looked to be a knee injury.
