  5. 'We don't just want to play well, we want to win'published at 19:14 British Summer Time 28 August 2022

    FT: Nottingham Forest 0-2 Tottenham

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper to Sky Sports: "Disappointed we lost the game. That is always the most important thing. We took loads of learnings from the game. I liked our performance in terms of the build-up. What we didn't do was threaten their goal enough for the amount of good positions we got in. Disappointed with that.

"It's a great finish the first goal but we were unlucky with the press. The second goal got a bit open-ended and we gave too many counter-attacks away but we were trying to get back in the game. We lost our markers in the box. We're not here to take part. We don't just want to play well, we want to win.

"We got in enough good positions to threaten the goal a lot more than we did. We did some big chances in the second half. We want to play the game we play to threaten. It's the hardest part of the game so we just haven't done it well enough. We played really well and I'm happy with that. There's a lot we can take out of it to grow as a team. But that's the mentality we had last year and we want to continue it this year.

"I haven't spoken to Steve Cook or seen it back so I'm sure VAR made the right decision. A brilliant save from Dean Henderson. A good guess on where he wanted to go and a good save. The atmosphere was amazing too. It raised the atmosphere even more with the save.

"We've played four games now and we've a lot from each one - some good and some not so good. We will stick to the plan, keep doing what we do and be proud to play for the club we play for."

  6. 'Some of our play was unbelievable'published at 19:10 British Summer Time 28 August 2022

    FT: Nottingham Forest 0-2 Tottenham

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Dean Henderson speaking to Sky Sports: "[Harry Kane's] unbelievable at penalties. I have said before he is probably the best finisher I have come up against. He slapped two past me but I was happy to get the penalty over him.

"I saw he went left to Aaron Ramsdale and I thought he might do the opposite for me so I went as high as I could to the right. He said he was going high right afterwards and that's where I was going. I don't think he quite caught it so I was lucky.

"We were happy with the stuff we played it was just getting that final bit. We might need some more time to gel together. We're not threatening the goal enough but some of the play was unbelievable. It's just that final bit. We have some top players and the energy in the stadium was fantastic. It just shows you can't switch off because these teams can punish you."

  7. 'We didn't do the hardest bit'published at 19:04 British Summer Time 28 August 2022

    Nottingham Forest 0-2 Tottenham

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper to BBC Sport: "We didn’t get anything from it [the performance]. The overriding feeling is never wanting to be happy if we’re not winning. That's the mentality I want from the players.

"That’s how we want to play. We did a lot of good things in the performance today. Our build-up play was excellent. What we didn’t do was the hardest bit and threaten the goal enough. We had enough opportunities to do that. We had some chances we should have done better with. We should be getting efforts on goal.

"For all the positive things people will say we do those things to try to score goals and we didn’t do that today."

On Morgan Gibbs-White: "It’s not groundbreaking fees. A lot of players have come for more than he has. A lot of the numbers reported aren’t true. I thought he was excellent. A really good impact."

On whether they will improve once they gel: "We hope. The idea is to keep progressing and building. If we get it right, we could be a good team. That's what we want. We’ll stick to that plan. We play Manchester City next and they've had an extra day to prepare. Thank you Premier League for that."

On whether they are signing Atletico Madrid defender Renan Lodi: "I’ll find out now. I'm going to speak to the owners. He’s a good player."

  8. 'Another good step for my team'published at 19:00 British Summer Time 28 August 2022

    Nottingham Forest 0-2 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte to Sky Sports: “The game was really tough. To play in this stadium is not easy. There is a lot of noise around the pitch. We suffered. They won many duels but at the same time we tried in every moment to exploit the space and create problems. In the second half I thought we did much better to control the game.

"I wanted us to move the ball and to pass more between our midfielders. In the first half we didn't do it. For Nottingham Forest it was sometimes easy to put pressure on us. It is not easy to come here and get three points and it is another clean sheet for us.

"The players are improving in their resilience and also learning to suffer together and be compact. We need to continue to improve and to find the passes into the lines. At the end I am satisfied with the three points.

"I think that for sure we have to try to continue to improve and especially with the ball, to have more personality and to play. The game is sometimes different because there is a lot of pressure or a lot of noise.

"We were not surprised because I was really clear with them about [the pressure] of Nottingham Forest. Also for this reason we overcame difficult moments in the game. The training ground is one thing then the game can bring a lot of pressure. I know sometimes you play and are calm in training sessions because you can make a mistake. So we need to improve but to come here and to get three points in this way, with another clean sheet, is another good step for my team.

"We are working in this aspect also. It is important the mentality. If you are strong mentally you survive in this type of situation. If you are weak you suffer difficult situations. We have to continue to work. We have been working only nine months. We try to improve the squad. We have to face several competitions. The road is long for us. The team are in front of us.

"We want to be competitive and to fight. There is only one way and that is to continue to work, to improve confidence and believe in ourselves. Sometimes only when you win something you get a belief and confidence because you know you are a winner. We are doing well and we have started this part. For sure it is not easy."

    Tottenham Hotspur

More from Harry Kane to Sky Sports on his first goal: "We knew the way they like to press we would have 3v3 chances a lot and it was a bit of a scruffy finish but they go in. The touch allowed me to open it up. Thankfully it went in."

On the penalty and whether Steve Cook should have been sent off: "If this isn't denying a goalscoring opportunity then I don't know what is. The game is over but I'm surprised with the decision.

"I have practised a lot against Dean Henderson at England but I was pretty focused with what I wanted to do on the penalty. I was trying to go high and didn't quite get it how I wanted it to. Fair play to him, he made a great save. He is a good shot-stopper and I thought he played fantastic for them today. Thankfully it didn't matter for us!"

On his second goal: "Richarlison put a great delivery in and those are always nice to get on the end of and head it home."

On competition for places between Son Heung-min and Richarlison: "If you want to be a top team you have to compete for every position and I think that's what we have got now. We will need everyone. Of course Son will be frustrated not to have scored so far this season but he is an important player for us. Also, when players are not quite at it you need players to come off the bench and have an impact and Richarlison is doing that."

  13. 'Every game has to be a sporting war'published at 18:46 British Summer Time 28 August 2022

    Nottingham Forest 0-2 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte to BBC Sport: “It was really intense. There was a lot of noise around the pitch, for sure I understand for the players, the opposition, to play here is not easy, with the crowd against you. We suffered in the right way. In the end we did well.

“You have to be ready to be compact and to suffer. Forest are a good team, it’s not easy to come here and get three points.

“I think we have to be good with the ball. With the ball we’re trying to work and to improve. To dominate in this game is not easy. We suffered to get the three points. Now to rest and recover our energy.

“Our start [to the season] was good. It’s important in the Premier League to try to get three points in every game. We have to continue in this way, it’s not easy, another clean sheet and we scored two goals.

“Many players are improving in many aspects. We have to trust in ourselves. In the Premier League there are top teams who want to try to fight.

“It’s always a sporting war. After a game there’s a winner and a loser. Every game has to be a sporting war for us.”

  14. 'We know we can do better'published at 18:46 British Summer Time 28 August 2022

    FT: Nottingham Forest 0-2 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham striker Harry Kane speaking to Sky Sports: " A good win first and foremost. It's a difficult place to come as the atmosphere here is really good. We didn't play our best, we know that. We dug in and I think there's been a few games like that this season. We got the three points but for sure we know we can do better.

"We dropped deep in the first half which we've done a lot already this season and it's taken us until the second half to get a bit of a wake-up call and be a bit more aggressive. We become better on the ball because of it. We got away with it in the first half this week because we went 1-0 up. It could easily have been a difficult story. It's something we need to fix and quickly because we have a lot of games coming up in a short space of time so we can't afford not to start the first half well.

"Any Premier League game we expect a tough match, especially away from home. We had a great pre-season and physically feel really good. We're just not quite showing it yet. We're still winning games which is the most important thing. We're becoming stronger as the game goes on. There's a long season left and we're still grinding out wins when we're not playing our best which is important.

"We have a fantastic manager, a really strong squad and we will need that squad over the next period as it's a busy schedule. It's important those players who haven't started games yet to be ready for their opportunity. We have started well but as we know in the Premier League it can soon turn around."

In the Premier League you don't get that time, but after what I've seen from them today, they will be fine this season.

The difference between the two teams is the striker.

If Harry Kane had been playing for Forest this afternoon then Forest would have won.

But Spurs weren't at their best today, so it's a sign of a good team when they can still win on a bad day.
