    Stephen Warnock
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Any manager deserves time and this is Gerrard's first full season as manager.

He's an individual that sets the highest of standards, like he did playing for Liverpool and England. So, I'm sure he expects the very same from his players now as the manager.

I've only spoken to him a few times but I know for a fact he wouldn't be happy with 14th, he wants to be in the top-ten and then bridge the gap to push for European football.

He will want improvement, consistency and a cut-out of individual errors.

Wolves boss Bruno Lage took his time to bring in new faces during the current transfer window but with Nathan Collins, Goncalo Guedes and Matheus Nunes, he has now done some significant business.

And Austrian striker Sasa Kalajdzic is also on Lage's radar.

Although Wolves sources are adamant a deal is not close, Kalajdzic will not be involved in Stuttgart's Bundesliga game with Koln today amid an expectation of another bid coming from Molineux.

Steven Gerrard says he is not feeling "frustration" over Aston Villa's summer recruitment, despite seeing a deal for Ismaila Sarr fall through earlier this week.

The Senegal forward was expected to move to Villa Park from Watford after the clubs agreed a deal worth about £25m, however, it is understood complications arose over the structure of the move and Sarr's personal terms.

"If we want to make signings they have to be right in a lot of areas," said Gerrard.

"If they’re not we won’t be hesitant in terms of going in a different direction and that was the case in this situation and we move forward. He is a fantastic player and we wish him well.

"If we want to make signings or, in the other direction, if we want people to go on loan or we want to transfer a player, it has to feel right collectively for the right people at the club. If it’s a case of that not feeling right, we discuss it and we make a collective decision.

"When we believe there is an area we need to improve, if the right people are out there we will try and execute to strengthen.

"There is no frustration. There is hard work and stuff going on behind the scenes, but I’d be surprised if that’s not the case at every club, especially at this time with the days running out."

  4. 'Isak is Sweden's key player'published at 13:13 British Summer Time 28 August 2022

    Wolves v Newcastle (14:00 BST)

Former Sweden international Jonas Olsson, speaking about Newcastle's new signing Alexander Isak on the Friday Football Social: “He is a great player. He has been the key player for the Swedish national team for the last few years.

"He can play in all offensive positions; in the national team he plays as one of two strikers. He is comfortable as well as a loan striker, as a false nine and also on the wing.

"He’s got great qualities. By comparison [Dejan] Kulusevski was boughtby Spurs. He is doing well for the national team but Isak is the key player.”

On whether he can handle the physicality of the Premier League: “Interesting question, that is always the issue when a new player comes from abroad. That aspect of the game is always tricky.

"He’s done well in Spain, he’s done well in Holland, he’s done ever so well for Sweden, where a lot of is built around physicality. It was also the question when Kulusevski went to Spurs, would he handle the physicality?

"With Isak’s speed and ability to play between the lines, he’s got enough awareness of the game and can take that aspect of the game. He won’t put himself in positions where he has to be physical. His football intelligence will stand him in good stead."

    BBC Sport

No day off for our man Simon Stone as the window nears its close...

Manchester United are hopeful their long-running pursuit of Ajax winger Antony will reach a successful conclusion this week.

Erik ten Hag has maintained an interest in the 22-year-old Brazilian throughout the summer.

However, with United’s efforts to sign Frenkie De Jong from Barcelona stalling, the attempt to sign Antony has cranked up over the past fortnight.

The player has made no secret of his desire to join United but so far, no bid has been lodged that reach Ajax’s valuation.

However, BBC Sport understands the two clubs are not far apart in their valuation talks are continuing in an effort to find a solution, which, given the player’s stance – he was not involved in Ajax’s Eredivisie encounter with Utrecht this lunchtime – would be the most obvious way out of the situation.

  14. Can Hammers get off the mark?published at 12:53 British Summer Time 28 August 2022

Aston Villa v West Ham (14:00 BST)

West Ham have lost their opening three league games of a season without scoring for only the second time - it previously happened in 1971-72, when their fourth match was a 0-0 draw with Ipswich.

In English top-flight history, only four sides have gone four fixtures without a point or goal from the beginning of a season: Derby County in 1899, Stoke City in 1906, Preston North End in 1924 and Crystal Palace in 2017.

They are on a four-match losing streak in the league - a fifth straight defeat would be their worst run since April 2017 under Slaven Bilic.

Manager David Moyes hasn't lost five consecutive Premier League games since a run of six with Everton ending in October 2005.

The Hammers have lost seven of their past nine Premier League away games, with their solitary win during that run coming at already relegated Norwich City in May.

This is West Ham's 1,000th Premier League fixture; they are the ninth club to reach this landmark.

  15. Paqueta having Hammers medicalpublished at 12:49 British Summer Time 28 August 2022

    BBC Sport

Some good news for Hammers fans... West Ham are on the brink of completing a £36.5m deal for Brazilian midfielder Lucas Paqueta.

The 25-year-old is due to have a medical on Sunday before completing the switch from French club Lyon in a deal that also includes a potential £14.4m in add-ons which, if triggered, would turn the transfer into a club record for the Hammers.

Paqueta, who will sign a five-year deal, joined Lyon for 20m euros (£17m) from AC Milan in 2020 and is expected to be part of the Brazil squad for this year's World Cup.

He scored nine goals and contributed six assists in 35 Ligue 1 appearances last season and has scored seven times in 33 games for Brazil.

Hammers boss David Moyes spoke this week about the difficulties he has encountered signing players this summer as he bids to maintain momentum at a club gearing up for another European campaign, although Paqueta would be the club's eighth signing of the summer.
