  2. 'We need quality in' - Neilsonpublished at 22:22 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

FT: Heart of Midlothian 1-0 Kilmarnock

Hearts manager Robbie Neilson tells BBC Sportsound: "We had a lot of possession, but we were a bit passive. We didn't have that spark we normally have.

"The culmination of so many games showed today. We didn't get the chance to rotate the squad because of so many injuries. We need quality in. If we need to wait beyond the window, we need to wait.

"We're missing seven or eight first-team players at the moment. It's a tough schedule [coming up], but we need to make sure we don't have these performances again."

  3. McInnes 'delighted' with cup progresspublished at 22:13 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

FT: Heart of Midlothian 0-1 Kilmarnock

Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes tells BBC Sportsound: "I was pleased with a lot of aspects of the performance.

"We spoke about the importance of getting a strong start. Equally, we wanted to make sure we got the first goal.

"I thought we had so much energy and discipline. I'm delighted we got the win."

On the quarter-final draw, a home tie against Dundee United, McInnes adds: "A home tie is all you can ask for. We had a tough match earlier in the season, but it gives us an opportunity to get to Hampden. They will see it equally the same."

  4. Hammell plans to be 'active' before transfer window endspublished at 22:12 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

FT: Motherwell 4-0 Inverness Caledonian Thistle

Motherwell manager Steven Hammell tells BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound: "We've said, if we want to be successful in this tournament, which we do, you're going to need to play some good teams, which we are.

"We've got a lot to do between now and then, but when it comes, we'll be ready to get after it.

"I was happy with what we did. We played well, we played with a style and a confidence that I enjoyed to watch. We'd have taken any way to get through the tie, but to get through the tie in such a style is pleasing to see.

"Kevin van Veen's in a good place just now. When you see him standing over a penalty, you always fancy him."

And, on transfers before Thursday's deadline, Hammell adds: "The plan is to be active, either tonight or tomorrow. We'll see how that goes. We've got a competitive squad just now - the plan was to add to it."

  5. 'It's a small step in the right direction'published at 22:10 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

    FT: Livingston 1-2 Dundee United

Dundee United interim manager Liam Fox tells BBC Scotland: "I thought in the first half we were decent. But I know how difficult it is to come here - I knew they could come back at us and they pushed us all the way.

"The most important thing is the club move forward to Saturday away to Motherwell. Not all problems are fixed, but it's a small step in the right direction - but it's really important it's not just a flash in the pan."

On drawing Kilmarnock away in the quarter-finals, Fox adds: "I'm just happy to be in the next round."

  6. Dodds unhappy with ref Clancypublished at 22:04 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

FT: Motherwell 4-0 Inverness Caledonian Thistle

Inverness Caledonian Thistle manager Billy Dodds accepts Motherwell impressed in tonight's Scottish League Cup tie but is unhappy with referee Kevin Clancy.

"The first half was sore," Dodds said following Caley Thistle's 4-0 loss at Fir Park.

"We lost bad goals, it gave them a lift. Motherwell were good tonight. They're Premiership opposition, but I think we can do things better. We were slack in a couple of the goals we gave away.

"I thought we were unlucky for the [second] penalty. I don't usually phone [referees' head] Crawford Allan. I've only phoned him once. I'm going to phone him about Kevin Clancy tonight because I can't watch that and not.

"As much as Motherwell were good, they don't need a helping hand. There was loads tonight."

  7. Celtic movement likely on deadline daypublished at 22:03 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

    FT: Ross County 1-4 Celtic

Celtic this week signed winger Sead Haksabanovic from Rubin Kazan and sent striker Albian Ajeti to Sturm Graz on loan.

Asked if more business will follow on transfer deadline day tomorrow, manager Ange Postecoglou says: "Potentially there could be someone coming in, but there could be another couple heading out after the one today."

  8. Postecoglou happy with replacementspublished at 22:00 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

    FT: ross County 1-4 Celtic

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou is just pleased that his holders are still in the competition no matter who they have drawn.

"Motherwell away - another away game and another good challenge," he tells BBC Scotland. "I am happy with the efforts tonight and glad to still be in it.

"I've made nine changes, which should affect the cohesion, but the boys have bought into what we are doing and to win 4-1 away from home is a very good performance.

"It is going to be a pretty hectic schedule and it's great to know I can rely on these guys."

    Scottish League Cup, quarter-finals

You imagine Rangers and Aberdeen will be happiest with that draw given they are at home to Championship opponents Dundee and Partick Thistle respectively.

In the two all-Premiership ties, holders Celtic visit Motherwell, while Kilmarnock host Dundee United.

The draw could certainly have been kinder for the two second-tier sides - and for the sake of a bit of cup romance.

  15. FULL-TIME Livingston 1-2 Dundee Unitedpublished at 21:38 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

Managerless United restore some pride after their weekend thrashing by Celtic as they beat Livingston to reach the Scottish League Cup quarter-finals.

Three days on from the 9-0 loss to Celtic that cost head coach Jack Ross his job, goals from Steven Fletcher and Ian Harkes gave them a half-time lead.

Debutant Kurtis Guthrie pulled one back for Livingston after the break, but the home side could not force extra-time as United earned a first win in six domestic games this season.

While interim boss Liam Fox did his chances of gaining the job permanently no harm, for Livingston it is their third defeat in a row with eight goals conceded.

  16. FULL-TIME Ross County 1-4 Celticpublished at 21:38 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

Holders Celtic move imperiously into the League Cup quarter-finals.

Captain Callum McGregor led the way with the opener, with striker Giorgos Giakoumakis adding the second before the break.

Centre-half Alex Iacovitti's headed reply threatened a surprise fightback, but thoughts of that lasted a matter of minutes before Daizen Maeda slid in to all but settle the tie.

Winger James Forrest rounded off another convincing win for Ange Postecoglou's Premiership leaders.
