We’ve seen an increase in fans at our Women’s Premiership games. We’ve been inundated with applications for new clubs wanting to sign up and join our leagues.

You now see loads of young girls in football shirts and playing in the park – not just young boys – so the impact of the summer has been huge.

It's not been a classic, if we're being honest.

Rumour has it the crossbar is still rattling from Caitlin McGuinness' effort.

  3. HALF-TIMEpublished at 18:20 British Summer Time 2 September 2022

    Luxembourg 0-0 Northern Ireland

A slow and scrappy half in Luxembourg finishes scoreless.

Northern Ireland have looked pedestrian at times and should have fallen behind when Marta Estevez Garcia missed a great opportunity for the hosts.

Kenny Shiels' side then came close to taking the lead when Caitlin McGuinness hit the woodwork with a powerful strike before Demi Vance had a snapshot in the box cleared as it was heading towards the net.

Shiels will no doubt be looking for more from his side after the break.

Luxembourg's Laura Miller has been down in the box for a few minutes now with a head injury for what looked like a collision with a team-mate as they tried to clear a free-kick.

She is back on her feet now, though, as play carries on.

  6. Postpublished at 18:14 British Summer Time 2 September 2022

    Luxembourg 0-0 Northern Ireland

The last 10 minutes have definitely been Northern Ireland's best of the match so far.

They will be disappointed not to be ahead, but at least they have generated some attacking momentum before the break.

Normally we have an outlet ball over the top with Lauren Wade’s pace but we don’t have that today. We’ll have to look for more slick passes from Marissa Callaghan instead to break through their defence.

  8. CLOSE!published at 18:10 British Summer Time 2 September 2022

    Luxembourg 0-0 Northern Ireland

Soon after Caitlin McGuinness hits the woodwork, Demi Vance has an effort cleared off the line.

It was a cross from Kirsty McGuinness, Marissa Callaghan kept the ball alive and Vance hit it on the turn - it was heading for the net before being blocked.

Northern Ireland have come alive in this game.

Caitlin McGuinness has been firing the goals in for Cliftonville and she's full of confidence at this level too, running hard and she was so unlucky there.

She almost caught it too well as it rattled off the crossbar. The chances are coming.

  10. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 18:07 British Summer Time 2 September 2022

    Luxembourg 0-0 Northern Ireland

Just as we were saying she hasn't had any chances so far, Caitlin McGuinness crashes a shot off the upright.

She got a fortunate bounce of the ball initially but then did well to cut inside. She couldn't have caught her shot any better but it hits the woodwork.

    Unlucky!

Northern Ireland need to start getting their best players on the ball more. We’re playing at Luxembourg’s level. The tempo is way too slow and that suits them. They’re just looking to play on the counter-attack.

  12. Quiet so far from Caitlin and NIpublished at 18:05 British Summer Time 2 September 2022

    Luxembourg 0-0 Northern Ireland

It's a rare start for Caitlin McGuinness tonight, but the Women's Premiership's top scorer has been starved of opportunities so far.

Kirsty McGuinness looked like she was about to conjure up a bit of magic in the box but, after jinking past a few defenders, she over-runs it and the ball goes out of play.

Sarah McFadden goes long with a pass down the left channel for Marissa Callaghan to run on to, but the captain is denied by the home defence.

Demi Vance then tries her luck from distance but her left foot strike sails over the crossbar.

Northern Ireland starting to look a little bit more threatening.

It's been a bright opening for Northern Ireland but, unlike the reverse fixture, they are still waiting for that early goal.

They are by far the more comfortable side on the ball but you just feel they need that first goal to play with more freedom and open the floodgates.

Over 20 minutes in now and Northern Ireland have still to find their attacking rhythm.

The passing out from the back has been slow and they have also let Luxembourg in for a great chance that they really should have scored.

Manager Kenny Shiels will no doubt be asking for more from his players.

We’re moving the ball quickly and getting the full backs involved in the play. This is much better from Northern Ireland.

  18. CLOSE!published at 17:51 British Summer Time 2 September 2022

    Luxembourg 0-0 Northern Ireland

    That's a huge let-off for Northern Ireland.

A long ball down the middle released Laura Miller who squared it for Marta Estevez Garcia but, from right in front of goal, she sends her low shot just wide of the post.

Big miss for the hosts - they'll feel they should have gone 1-0 up there.

First proper attempt on goal of the match - and it was a fine strike from Northern Ireland youngster Joely Andrews.

Chloe McCarron played a nice pass inside and Andrews let fly from the edge of the box, only for Lucie Schlime to make a smart save at the near post.

    Good strike, good save.

Luxembourg are putting a press on in certain areas. Northern Ireland should look to switch it up a bit more to get Caitlin McGuinness in, as well as trying to get Louise McDaniel on the ball.
