The other match in Group E - Chelsea's group - saw Red Bull Salzburg beat Dinamo Zagreb 1-0.

Celtic were beaten 3-1 by RB Leipzig but Real Madrid did enough to beat Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 in Spain.

Jude Bellingham scored and assisted as captain to lead Borussia Dortmund to a comfortable 4-1 win over Sevilla.

Benfica held Paris St-Germain to a 1-1 draw in Group H and Juventus beat Maccabi Haifa 3-1.

AC Milan

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli told Amazon Prime: "We started off well, but then we made many poor choices and we could have definitely done better.

"The second goal was key, it changed our attitude. At this level you can't afford to slow down."

Manchester City

Owen Hargreaves to BT Sport: "Manchester City have gone close and have just missed that final step [in the Champions League]. Erling Haaland in those moments when you need a goal will probably get it for you.

"The best team in the Premier League just got better with one of the best strikers in the world."

Chelsea

Chelsea boss Graham Potter to BT Sport: “It was a good night for us. We needed to play well. The attitude and application of the players was fantastic. It was a really important win for us.

“I thought we started off a bit nervous for about five minutes. It was just a result of us wanting to do so well. But then you saw the appetite of the players. We got control of it and had a bit of a threat. The first goal was important. We had to start a little on the back foot in the second half. We suffered a bit which was good and the second goal gave us a breather.

"Clean sheet, three goals. The personality of players was good."

On Wesley Fofana's injury: "We’ll have to scan it tomorrow. See how it is. Nothing to report at the moment. The one disappointing thing of the evening."

"It was a good performance from the team overall. Apart from the end of the first half, they didn’t have many chances. It says a lot about how we defended as a unit. It was an important win but still a long way to go in the competition.

"The boys have been really open, responsible, honest and fantastic to work with. They realised they weren’t at the levels. That’s great from a coach’s perspective."

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang wears it all on his face and he has a huge smile on his face at this club.

So far from what we've seen, he looks a goal threat and he is what Chelsea have needed.

Yes, he has a chequered history which leaves a question mark over him, but so far he looks happy playing in this team.

Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola speaking to BT Sport: "We are consistent and fighting for everything. After we won the derby 6-3 we had a lot of confidence so great to play the way we played.

"The result was excellent but I'm really impressed the way we attacked. I'm really, really satisfied and again compliments to the players.

"We played really good in all departments. We were really focused. And many players played at a high level. Everyone has to perform well to help the team and win game-by-game.

"The game was 3-0 and he's played a lot of minutes. It was good for the younger players and Cole Palmer was excellent.

"He played unbelievable Jack Grealish. The next step is to score goals.

"We cannot forget that last season we could not beat Southampton. We will look at that. We have to put in the mindset that it is a new game and hopefully we do not believe what we did will happen in the next game. We have to win all the games to finish first in the group stage too."

The BT Sport pundits were loving Reece James' performance today...

Joe Cole: "Reece James was sublime all night. There are not enough superlatives about him."

Eni Aluko: "Great cross for the second goal. He’s so smart in how he waits for overlap to happen. Waits for the moment. One of his biggest attributes is striking the ball. How many times have we seen him strike a ball across the keeper. I love the deception. He waits and lifts it top corner, it’s such an intelligent finish. He’s almost playing with the goalkeeper. He was the best player in the second half, defensively and offensively."

Rio Ferdinand:"What I loved abut Reece James in the second half is he was aggressive with Rafael Leao. He said ‘I’ll defend you and also be an effective player at the other end of the pitch'.

"The difference with Reece James, he wants the fight. On the ball I think he’s equally as good as Trent Alexander-Arnold and defensively he’s a lot sharper. He defends a lot better than Trent in one v ones."

This is a massive win from Chelsea but I think that Graham Potter sees it as a wider journey and process.

He's obviously made the right choices but it took some time for them to find their feet tonight.

"The score is deserved and is good for the next game. Nice to score goals and to help the team to win as well.

"Definitely [enjoying himself at Chelsea]. Feeling good. I was very welcomed by all the players and staff.

"It was a bit strange to play against them [Milan] after a lot of years but that’s football.

"The first goal was really important. It gave us strength and confidence to play the game. We knew what we had to do against Milan. They have great strikers as well. The defenders did an incredible job today.

"It’s easier when you win games. The mood is very good at the moment. We’ll try to keep it up."

Manchester City

Manchester City forward Jack Grealish to BT Sport: "I loved it. Playing in the Champions League at the Etihad is always great. Three wins out of three to top the group. It was a great night. I'm loving it.

"My last three or four games I feel back to myself. I am playing more with that freedom and confidence. It would help if I got on the scoresheet, I was desperate tonight, but it's all about enjoying it and winning. When the luck isn't with you...

"I've played a lot of games recently so I'm thankful to the manager for that. I'm playing with a smile on my face and feel like I'm settling in now."

On Erling Haaland: "It's unbelievable honestly. I've never witnessed anything like it in my life. For the first and second goals I was just laughing. He is always there.

"The keeper said something to me as I was walking back. He said 'he's not human!' I said 'you're telling me?' Hopefully he can carry on this form and take us to glory."

Manchester City

Former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott on BT Sport: "I've heard Pep Guardiola talk about Ilkay Gundogan's IQ. He is remarkable. Sergio Gomez was exceptional as well."

Ex-England striker Peter Crouch: "You could see players who were desperate to score. Those stats are ridiculous.

"We were all disappointed. It's what we came for. We wanted Erling Haaland to get another hat-trick.

"Julian Alvarez would probably walk into most Premier League teams. He's struggling to get in the City team at the moment but every time he plays he seems to assist or score."

Manchester City

Owen Hargreaves on BT Sport: "Possession we're used to but to have 30 shots, even from Manchester City, seems a lot.

"I'm sure there were a couple more goals out there for Erling Haaland and he will know that too but City want to keep him fresh. I'm sure he would have wanted to stay out there but Cole Palmer came on and did great. Haaland stays healthy and he can take them to the Champions League title which is what they all want.

"City never play poorly. Rarely does that happen. They are special to watch, they play beautiful football, but now they are scoring four or five goals every game it is scary for everyone else."

In the first 10 minutes of the game it was all Milan, Chelsea were unsure about what they were doing and it was disjointed.

But once they got into their rhythm and found their confidence, they found their feet.

Graham Potter must be really pleased by the way his team have adapted to his changes.
