Real Madrid will be Spain's only team in the last 16 with Sevilla, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid all out with a game to spare.

The last season Spain only had one team in the knockout rounds was 1998-99, also Real.

  4. 'This gives us a lift'published at 22:53 British Summer Time 26 October 2022

    FT: Ajax 0-3 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BT Sport: "They had a top half an hour from a specific moment where they created a lot of pressure and did really well and we had to defend with a lot of passion.

"We scored a goal which was exceptional. The second half we had a really good start and controlled the game from then on.

On Nunez: "I think even he was surprised! [when Firmino passed for the shot on the woodwork]. He had a really good game in both directions, helped defending and played with a big heart today so hopefully we took him off early enough!

More on the game: "We changed system again a little bit, we had to. We thought it would make sense. Ajax are a good football team and full of confidence always and you have to adjust. We did that and fine.

"It is clear. We are through to the knockouts and I will never take that for granted. Really helpful for the club, of course it gives the lift. Tonight we all feel great and we have a few days to prepare for Leeds."

  6. 'We were very clinical'published at 22:46 British Summer Time 26 October 2022

    FT: Ajax 0-3 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool's Harvey Elliott, speaking to BT Sport: "When you come to a stadium like this you will always get limited chances but we were very clinical. All round it was a good game.

"Strikers need to get mistakes out of the way and not dwell on it too much which is what Nunez did.

"My goal was about getting a clean strike. My right leg isn't just for standing on!"

Can I point out that the purpose of the offside rule is to prevent unfair advantage to the attacking player and stop goal hanging? I cannot see any reason why Harry Kane has an “unfair” advantage despite the fact he appears to be onside anyway. I’m no spurs fan but I think the refs association may owe them an explanation…

  8. 'VAR is doing a lot of damage'published at 22:39 British Summer Time 26 October 2022

    Spurs 1-1 Sporting

    Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs boss Antonio Conte to BT Sport: "I think the ball was in front of Kane and the goal is a goal. Yeah. I don’t understand the line they put. It very difficult to comment on this decision.

"VAR is doing a lot of damage. I want to see if in another stadium of a big team if they are ready to disallow this type of goal. I’d like to know this.

"A lot of injustice. I don’t like this type of situation. I see not positive things.

"The second half was positive and we played with a great intensity. We deserved to win but we know what happened.

"I don’t understand why we have to get something from the next game when we can finish the qualification in this game. When you invent this type of situation, you create a lot of damage of the club. Also problems."

Theo: VAR ruins great drama and moments in football… end of. Just clear and obvious decisions should be checked.

Ed: Whatever good VAR is supposed to do, it is not remotely worth it. Took 3 minutes to rule on a 95th minute winner that depends on which frame the operator stops it on and where they draw a line. Shambles.

  10. 'Football is about raw emotion'published at 22:33 British Summer Time 26 October 2022

    FT: Spurs 1-1 Sporting

    Andros Townsend
    Everton midfielder on 5 Live

The bottom line for me, whether it's offside or onside is irrelevant. I don't like VAR for this reason. As a football fan, you're killing the raw emotion of the game. You've seen Conte running on the pitch, injured players are running on the pitch.

Harry Kane has gone mad, the fans have gone mad. And then 10 minutes later the goal gets disallowed. This is not what football is about. Football is about raw emotion. Slowly VAR is dragging out the raw emotion of the game we love.

  11. 'I was too happy'published at 22:32 British Summer Time 26 October 2022

    Spurs 1-1 Sporting

Sporting goalscorer Marcus Edwards to BT Sport: "Crazy game. Dramatic towards the end. It [the offside] looked tight."

On his goal: "Crazy for me. It’s crazy, all my family and friends are here supporting me. I wasn't going to celebrate but I was too happy. I can’t put it into words."

Robert: If it takes 3 mins to decide... God, how I hate VAR. It's the scourge of the modern game.

Jon: Somehow, in a season of pathetic nonsense, VAR reaches a new low. Unbelievable really.

  13. 'It looks onside'published at 22:26 British Summer Time 26 October 2022

    FT: Spurs 1-1 Sporting

    Chris Sutton
Former Aston Villa striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

It was absolute bedlam in the stadium when the goal went in. Conte got involved with the celebrations, he was running down the touchline. The place went wild.

I get the unhappiness on the decision because the more I look at it, the more it looks onside. But Spurs were so passive in the first half and so way off it. Had they started the game like they played in the second half, this would have been so one-sided.

In the second half they were incredible. But that's a big moment because they've got to go to Marseille which is a really hostile place and get a result. They are under pressure.

There are a couple of things Conte will be unhappy about, mostly the VAR decision but Spurs were woeful in the first half.

Ashen: You can't be offside if the ball is played backwards.

Jon: He was behind the ball. One of the worst decisions in football history!

Anon: If Emerson heads it backwards how can Kane be offside?

  15. 'A few of us don't have a clue what happened'published at 22:20 British Summer Time 26 October 2022

    Spurs 1-1 Sporting

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham defender Matt Doherty to BT Sport: "I think you can see from the celebrations we thought we won it. Pfffft. I don't really know what happened at the end.

"I thought because it went backwards and hit a defender it was a different phase of play. I'll have to look at the rule book. A few of us don't have a clue what happened.

"If we're being honest we didn't play that well. They nullified us in the first half and deserved to be ahead.

"We're top of the group. It's not how we wanted the night to go but it's still in our hands.

"I wish we knew [why they can't play well for a whole game]. We're analysing games and training sessions, watching a lot of videos to find out how we can peform for 90 minutes and play like we can play.

"We have a few days to look back and see what went wrong before we play on Saturday.

"I think it's clear to see we want to play like we did in the second half for 90 minutes. We know we're capable of doing it but it's what we're struggling to do."

We are still waiting for any Spurs players or Antonio Conte to talk to the media after that. Maybe they need to calm down first.

  19. 'Darwin was really angry with himself'published at 22:12 British Summer Time 26 October 2022

    FT: Ajax 0-3 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool's Andy Robertson, speaking to BT Sport: "We knew they had to win. They tried to start fast and I don't think we calmed down quickly enough but the important thing was we didn't concede. We managed to keep it tight and then it was about getting the first goal.

"We got the goal and in the second half we came through. Nice to get through before the last game.

"We had control. Darwin was really angry with himself at half time. I sat next to him at half time and told him I would put a cross in to his head for him to score.

"Three nil at this place, a really tough place to come and the clean sheet is so important for us now."

  20. Top spot still up for grabspublished at 22:09 British Summer Time 26 October 2022

    FT: Ajax 0-3 Liverpool

Liverpool can still finish top of Group A when they host Napoli next week. However, they will need to better the 4-1 win the Italians had over them earlier this season.
