    Well, well well!

Stoke go ahead early against the league leaders!

The Blades fail to fully clear a corner and veteran Phil Jagielka sends it back into the mixer where fellow defender Ben Wilmot is waiting to tap in from close-range.

Great start for the Potters but there's a very long way to go.

  2. CLOSE!published at 15:04 British Summer Time 8 October 2022

    West Brom 0-0 Luton

West Brom could already be ahead here!

Jed Wallace gets down the left and cuts the ball back for Brandon Thomas-Asante, who can only find the side-netting with his shot.

Dara O'Shea then heads wide from a corner - the Baggies just can't seem to take their chances.

  3. goal

GOAL: Norwich 1-0 Prestonpublished at 15:04 British Summer Time 8 October 2022

    Josh Sargent (2 mins)

    That didn't take long!

Norwich are hunting top spot in the Championship and they've had the perfect start as Josh Sargent's seventh goal of the season has sent them ahead.

That's the first goal Preston have conceded away from home this season.

    West Brom 0-0 Luton

Some talk that West Brom are lining up with three at the back today - a final roll of the dice for Steve Bruce?

The atmosphere is a bit flatter than normal at the Hawthorns. Bruce needs to get the home support on side early, otherwise you feel things might get toxic.

  9. Squad Goals League Two game of the daypublished at 14:56 British Summer Time 8 October 2022

    Stevenage v Swindon (15:00 BST)

    Danny Harrington
    Squad Goals

Swindon are hoping to get two back-to-back wins in League Two against Stevenage following a 1-0 win against Newport in midweek but this is a tough away fixture for the Robins - Stevenage have won six of their last seven games in the league, with just two defeats in all competitions this season.

There's an emphasis on style for Scott Lindsey’s Swindon, playing stylish passing football that supporters have become accustomed to over the last season under previous boss Ben Garner. As the Town boss Lindsey himself put it in his pre-match comments, it's a high risk, high reward method.

Stevenage play a contrasting style based on solid defensive effort under boss Steve Evans, which sees Boro in the automatic promotion places at this phase of the season. Considering that Stevenage were 22nd when Evans took over last season, it should be considered no mean feat.

Luke Norris will be the man to watch for Stevenage, having notched four league goals this season. Swindon, meanwhile, go into this game without captain Angus MacDonald, who has a "significant" collarbone injury.

Forest Green v Bolton (15:00 BST)

    Joe Thompson
Former Rochdale and Tranmere midfielder on Squad Goals

Well, the home side are in desperate need of three points today.

Forest Green have struggled to get going this season. The step up has really tested their small squad. But the signing of experienced striker Conor Wickham could be vital in their fight for survival. The frontman has scored three goals in his last four games and bringing him in could be a stroke of genius by Ian Burchnall.

At the other end of the pitch, they conceded another three last weekend to fellow strugglers Burton Albion. These defensive frailties need addressing if they’re to claw themselves out of a relegation fight.

Wanderers are back in Gloucestershire after a midweek blip at Cheltenham Town on Tuesday. Losing 1-0 to a late Ryan Broom goal left Ian Evatt disappointed to say the least.

He talked about getting back to basics after that defeat which put an end to a four-game winning streak.

The green stage is set, now who’s going to be the star of the show?

    • Barnsley v Exeter City

    Presenter, Squad Goals

In The Truman Show, Jim Carrey’s character is unwittingly the star of his own reality TV show. He steps out of his house to see the same figures, have the same conversations and can never leave the giant film set that is ‘Seahaven Island’. Is this Steve Bruce’s reality at The Hawthorns?

They’re third from bottom and have only one league win all season. He is constantly fielding questions about his future and went viral in midweek after being confronted by a fan following their 1-0 loss at Preston. Last Saturday saw them lose 3-2 to Swansea City, despite leading 2-1 with 25 minutes to go.

Luton Town are one of the division’s best sides on the road and Nathan Jones has continued to work wonders with his recruitment. Carlton Morris has been an inspired signing with six goals in 12 Championship games, just one shy of last season’s tally at Barnsley.

The cameras will be trained on the home dugout. A loss today and it could be good afternoon, good evening and goodnight for Steve Bruce.

Leyton Orient's 10-game unbeaten run may have been brought to an end last weekend by Newport but they still sit at the top of the table and go in search of a return to winning ways on the road at Doncaster this afternoon.

Stevenage, who face Swindon today, are second only on goal difference and Northampton, who are two points back on the leaders, have a big game against fifth-placed Salford.

Barrow host Mansfield in a clash of sixth v seventh and Bradford are looking to continue their good form at home to Stockport.

Walsall and AFC Wimbledon brought their winless runs to an end in their previous matches and face each other today looking to make it back-to-back victories, while Hartlepool face Carlisle.

Two of the league's out-of-form teams, Harrogate and Colchester, go up against each other this afternoon looking to pick up an important three points to arrest a slide towards the relegation zone.

Bottom-of-the-table Rochdale are crossing the border to face Newport, and struggling Crawley head to Grimsby.

Derby County: Paul Warne says working as Rams head coach is 'another level'

Amongst those League One fixtures this afternoon is Paul Warne's first home game in charge of Derby against Port Vale.

Warne, who left Championship side Rotherham to take over the Rams, told BBC East Midlands Today's Charlie Slater that it's an honour to be the boss at Pride Park and follow in the footsteps of one of the club's legendary managers in Brian Clough.

Leaders Plymouth earned a last-minute win over Sheffield Wednesday in midweek and will be looking to continue their fine start to the season this afternoon when they host Accrington - but Stanley are in a good form themselves having won their last three.

Ipswich lead the chasing pack and are a just one point behind Argyle. They will be confident of picking up three points this afternoon when they head to bottom-of-the-table Morecambe.

The Owls are looking to bounce back from the Plymouth defeat at home to Cheltenham and Portsmouth host mid-table Fleetwood.

Barnsley's great form has seen them rise to fifth and they are looking for a fourth consecutive win at home to Exeter, while sixth-placed Bolton, who lost to Cheltenham on Tuesday, are looking to return to winning ways against another Gloucestershire side in struggling Forest Green, who are without a win in four.

Paul Warne enjoyed a win in his first game in charge of Derby last weekend, with the Rams hosting Port Vale this afternoon, while Peterborough, who sit just outside the playoff spots, host second from bottom Burton.

Elsewhere, Charlton, Wycombe and Bristol Rovers are three teams who could do with a win and they face Lincoln, Oxford and Cambridge respectively.

  15. Blues face challenge from high-scoring Robinspublished at 14:45 British Summer Time 8 October 2022

Birmingham City v Bristol City (15:00 BST)

Forget that both sides are in the bottom half of the Championship table – this should be a spicy affair.

Despite losing to a streaky Middlesbrough side in mid-week, 19th placed Birmingham City aren’t in terrible form having earned eight points from their last five games that included a point against league leaders Sheffield United – they only narrowly lost to second placed Norwich after conceding in injury time.

The biggest problem facing the Blues is their lack of firepower with only nine goals from 12 matches.

Bristol City on the other hand, have been on a poor run of form with only one win from their last five but they did manage to stop-the-rot with a draw and a clean sheet against Coventry in midweek.

Where their opponents struggle, the Robins excel, with 20 goals so far this campaign making them joint league leaders in that department.

Birmingham might have the slightly better form but Bristol have the mustard upfront to make life difficult for the home side.

  16. Can Coventry upset Burnley?published at 14:42 British Summer Time 8 October 2022

    Coventry v Burnley (15:00 BST)

Coventry may be bottom of the Championship but they're unbeaten in their past four games.

They welcome Burnley for their first meeting with the Clarets since April 2012. However, Vincent Kompany's side travel to the Midlands with a less than stellar record at the opposite end of the table.

Burnley have drawn all three of their past three away games 1-1 and face off against a Mark Robins-led side.

Robins has won two of his past five matches against Burnley, with his most recent home win coming in November 2013 whilst in charge of Huddersfield.

  17. Can Norwich break through Preston's stingy defence for chance to go top?published at 14:39 British Summer Time 8 October 2022

    Norwich v Preston (15:00 BST)

Norwich celebrate a goal at ReadingImage source, Getty Images

Norwich will know a win today and they could go top of the Championship, if other results go their way.

Unbeaten since mid-August the Canaries are in fine form but you could argue that they haven’t been tested too often so far this season with just two games against teams inside the leagues top 10.

Home field advantage and the 12th man will certainly help Norwich who have claimed seven points from their last three at Carrow Road.

Meanwhile Preston, enter the game coming off a win and a draw and two clean sheets as they look to find some consistency and push up the table.

What the Lillywhites lack in attacking options, they more than make up for at the back, owning the best defensive record in the Championship thus far only conceding four goals through 12 games.

  18. Last-chance saloon for Baggies boss Bruce?published at 14:36 British Summer Time 8 October 2022

West Brom v Luton (15:00 BST)

    Steve BruceImage source, Rex Features

Although performances have, on the whole, been OK, West Brom's league record of one win from 12 simply isn't good enough for a side who had been expected to challenge for promotion.

The Baggies are in the relegation zone and boss Steve Bruce needs a win fast if he's to remain in his job.

Luton, meanwhile, are on a run of just one defeat in eight which has seen them move up to ninth after a shaky start.

Nathan Jones' side are looking for a fourth consecutive away win, which the club haven't achieved in the EFL since 2002, with West Brom trying to avoid a third home loss on the bounce.
