  2. 'We have to go to a difficult place and play very well'published at 22:53 British Summer Time 24 September 2022

FT: Scotland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

As you would expect, Scotland manager Steve Clarke refused to get ahead of himself despite the tantalising prospect of first place in the group should Scotland avoid defeat on Tuesday against Ukraine.

He adds: "We know we have to get a point, we know we have to go to a difficult place and play very well, and if we do that we get the first place in the group and then we can talk about the rewards.

"We've already got more points in this Nations League campaign than we did in the last one so we're still improving."

It has been a busy old day for Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon. Fresh from being up all night to attend the birth of his new baby boy, he was on hand to help ease Scotland to another big result.

Gordon told BBC Scotland, "I got the call last night, stayed up all night and the baby was delivered safely, so it's been a very good day all round.

"I'm staying with the squad tonight but maybe I'll get a few hours off tomorrow and then it will be back to preparing for the next game."

Perhaps an understatement in the circumstances but the big keeper looked thrilled with it all.

  4. 'Half-time calmed Scotland down'published at 22:48 British Summer Time 24 September 2022

FT: Scotland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

Ready for a bit more from Scotland manager Steve Clarke?

"You could see in the first 20 minutes that Ireland had a full week to prepare It took us a bit of time to get a foothold in the game and by then we had conceded from a set play, which plays into Ireland's strengths because they've got pace and they're a good counter-attacking team.

"I knew eventually the game would come back to us. But half-time was good just to have a reset, just to calm the boys down, because you don't want them to get too frantic."

Clarke is disappointed with McTominay's booking which rules him out of Tuesday's game, but believes he has ample cover.

"It's a blow to lose Scott, especially due to something so late in the game," said Clarke. "But we've got good cover in there.

"We've got Ryan Jack, Kenny McLean, there's plenty of bodies in there. It's a great chance for someone else to play in a fantastic game.

"Ukraine know they have to win so that can change their mindset a little bit."

  5. Who takes McTominay's place?published at 22:40 British Summer Time 24 September 2022

FT: Scotland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

We'll have to wait and see if Kieran Tierney and Aaron Hickey are fit to play on Tuesday, but Scott McTominay definitely misses out through suspension.

Who should replace the Manchester United midfielder in Krakow?

Billy Gilmour and Ryan Jack are in the squad but have not featured in the past two games, while Kenny McLean has come off the bench twice.

Ryan Fraser is also pressing for a start after two good cameos.

  6. 'A harsh one to lose' - Kennypublished at 22:36 British Summer Time 24 September 2022

FT: Scotland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

Some more from Ireland manager Stephen Kenny, who told Premier Sports: "I thought we played very well in the first half, it was a really controlled performance. Disappointed to concede five minutes into the second half, because we started the half all right and that gave Scotland momentum.

"Alan Browne appears to be pushed by a Scotland player before the handball, so that's contentious. The players were brilliant overall. It's a kick in the teeth but we have to accept it.

"We've only had three defeats in 16 games, and we've brought players through. There's a good combination of youth and experience and I feel like we're getting better.

"Scotland showed their quality, but it's a harsh on to lose."

  7. 'Delighted for the players' - Clarkepublished at 22:34 British Summer Time 24 September 2022

FT: Scotland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

Scotland manager Steve Clarke tells Premier Sports: "It was always going to be difficult. Ireland had a full week to prepare - you saw that in the first half. They pressed well and stopped us getting into a rhythm.

"I'm delighted for the players. This group of players are desperate to perform for their country and they showed that again tonight."

[On Jack Hendry and Scott McKenna's partnership]: "They had a lot on their plate tonight, but I thought they were outstanding again.

[On Lyndon Dykes leading the line] "Obviously the striker is the one that triggers the press - it takes a lot of energy against a back three. I reversed the roles from Ukraine.

[On the penalty award] "If you jump with your hands in front of you, and it hits your hand, it's a penalty. I never had any doubt in Ryan - he's always been good from the penalty spot.

"We go to Krakow to play a very good Ukraine team, but they have to win. We'll rest, recover, count the bodies, and get on the plane to Poland."

  8. Tierney and Hickey 'okay', says Clarkepublished at 22:29 British Summer Time 24 September 2022

FT: Scotland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

Scotland lost both starting full-backs, with Kieran Tierney taken off after a head knock and Aaron Hickey pulling up.

That's after losing Nathan Patterson to a bad looking injury during Wednesday's win over Ukraine, while captain Andy Robertson is currently sidelined.

"They're okay," says Scotland manager Steve Clarke when asked about Tierney and Hickey.

He tells Premier Sports: "We took Kieran off as a precaution, and Aaron felt a tightness so we took him off as a precaution as well."

  9. 'We deserved the win' - McGinnpublished at 22:24 British Summer Time 24 September 2022

FT: Scotland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

Scotland captain John McGinn had a big grin on his face as he spoke to Premier Sports... "I'm battered and bruised", he said. "A tough game, but we competed well in the second half and deserved the win.

"It was getting a bit feisty, but that suited us. A huge night for me - all my family and friends were here. I'm proud as ever to join the names on that list.

"Beating Ireland on my 50th cap is something I'll never forget. The crowd drove us on and the subs made a difference.

"We'll do what we can to recover [before playing Ukraine]. It's like a cup final on Tuesday. We're looking forward to the game."

  10. 'Not a penalty' - Kennypublished at 22:21 British Summer Time 24 September 2022

FT: Scotland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny thinks the penalty award for Alan Browne's handball was the wrong decision.

"It appears Alan Browne has been pushed by a Scottish player that has resulted in him raising his hands into an unnatural position," he says.

Craig Gordon won his 72nd cap after becoming a dad again this morning.

  13. 'We go into the Ukraine game looking to win' - Hendrypublished at 22:11 British Summer Time 24 September 2022

FT: Scotland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

Scotland's other goalscorer Jack Hendry has also been giving his thoughts to Premier Sports: "It was a good game", he said. "Both teams went for the win. It's always competitive, Scotland against Ireland.

"At half-time we spoke about how we can hurt them and thankfully we did that second half.

"It was a good spectacle for the fans, and fair play to Ireland, they made it difficult for us.

"I had some momentum [for the equaliser] and followed it into the box. Ryan picked me out and I got on the end of it. It was a good time to score, it changed the momentum of the game towards us.

"Tonight we only needed a point, but we don't have that mentality, and it'll be the same again on Tuesday - we go into the Ukraine game looking to win."

  14. 'Taking Obafemi off was strange'published at 22:08 British Summer Time 24 September 2022

FT: Scotland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

RTE pundit Liam Brady is "very positive" about the Republic of Ireland's display despite the defeat but admits he was surprised by Stephen Kenny's decision to take off striker Michael Obafemi in the second half.

"That's my only issue tonight," says the former midfield maestro. "I thought it was a strange decision. Obafemi was absolutely flying and didn't look tired at all when he was taken off. He was causing Scotland huge problems."

Ryan Christie really impressed in the second half, setting up the equaliser for Jack Hendry before knocking in the penalty.

He was always on the front foot looking to make things happen.

  17. 'We showed a right bit of character' - Christiepublished at 22:00 British Summer Time 24 September 2022

FT: Scotland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

Scotland's match-winner Ryan Christie has been talking to Premier Sports: "It's a big win", he said. "We came into the game desperate to win - we wanted to come away from this camp with three wins.

"We wanted to put the result in Dublin right, because we felt we let the fans down over there and thankfully we did.

"Obviously, first half we found it tough to control the game. We showed a right bit of character second half to get back in the game. Lots of confidence to take from this, and we go again on Tuesday.

"The gaffer has kept me on penalties the last few games - I fancy myself, and I was waiting for the keeper to dive out of the way almost and thankfully it goes in."

  18. 'We were very comfortable at half time'published at 21:56 British Summer Time 24 September 2022

FT: Scotland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

Jayson Molumby was named the Republic of Ireland's player of the match by Irish broadcaster RTE but doesn't look exactly thrilled after picking up his award.

"It's very disappointing," he says. "We were 1-0 up at half time and I thought we were very comfortable at that stage.

"We just didn't start quickly enough in the second half and it's ended up costing us.

"We shouldn't have conceded the first goal so quickly in the second half and we had a couple of chances as well to finish the game off which we'll be disappointed about.

"In the first half we were excellent. Well organised and we matched them in every battle and won every second ball. It's just disappointing that we seemed to fade in the second half."

There was much more intent and belief in the second half. Ireland will go away disappointed, but it was never going to be an easy game. It takes an enormous amount of guts and courage to get a result, and Scotland showed that in abundance.
