That's all folks. A sobering Thursday night in Edinburgh as ten-man Hearts are comfortably beaten by Fiorentina.

The good news is they only have to wait a week before an opportunity for revenge on Italian soil. We'll see you in Florence.

    Goodnight!

  3. 'It's a massive learning curve' - Neilsonpublished at 22:30 British Summer Time 6 October 2022

    FT: Hearts 0-3 Fiorentina

Hearts boss Robbie Neilson has been giving his thoughts to BBC Sportsound post-match: "We're disappointed with the result, but you've got to be proud of the players and the club to get to this level.

"The disappointment for me was that the three goals were preventable. For all the possession they had, and movement of the ball, the first two goals are just balls into the box that we really should deal with.

"A very inexperienced and young back three to play against a £60m striker who was at Real Madrid, so these guys will learn from that. You switch off for half a second against these teams and they'll score.

"It's a massive learning curve, you can't switch off.

"We have to put ourselves back in a position that we can get this again next year, and build. You look at teams historically when they get into Europe for the first time, it takes a few seasons before they start performing.

"I'm massively proud of the players tonight. They've gone out against a top European team, and competed for Heart of Midlothian. Yes we came up short, but they gave everything."

Just the Latvians, RFS, left to visit Tynecastle Park.

Hearts don't have a big enough squad to play Thursday, Sunday every week. They've lost key players to injury, and there's not enough quality there.

  7. 'They were too good' - Gordonpublished at 22:11 British Summer Time 6 October 2022

    FT: Hearts 0-3 Fiorentina

Hearts captain Craig Gordon spoke to BT Sport: "They moved the ball about very well. They've enjoyed themselves. We wanted to get closer, but sometimes you have to say they were too good.

"There was a few spells in the first half where we could have nicked a goal. It would have been against the run of play, but we could have nicked a goal and changed it. Within five minutes of the second-half, the game is gone.

[On the red card] "The ball is coming through to me, [Jovic] is not catching it. That's why he's gone to ground to look for something out. He's managed to get it, which finishes the game. I know he wasn't catching the ball. He knew what he was doing.

[On the 20-year anniversary of his first Hearts game] "It's been some journey, a lot of highs and lows. I don't want to reflect just yet, I've still got a few more to go. To still be here twenty years later, I wouldn't have imagined that when I took to the field all those years ago. I'm happy to still be out there, but I want a few better results before I finish, though.

I wonder what Robbie Neilson would change if he could have these 90 minutes again. They were never going to win that game. All they did was lose the ball and drop off. 3-0 flatters Hearts.

Fiorentina took the lead early, and it was one way traffic from that point. They were in total control - Hearts never laid a glove on them. I'm frustrated, I feel those Hearts players are better than what they've shown tonight.

  11. FULL-TIME Hearts 0-3 Fiorentinapublished at 21:56 British Summer Time 6 October 2022

A miserable night for Hearts comes to an end, as they are comfortably beaten by a superb Fiorentina side.

The early goal from Rolando Mandragora set the tone, before Christian Kouame's superb bicycle kick doubled La Viola's lead.

Lewis Neilson's red card just four minutes into the second-half deflated any notion of a Hearts comeback, before Luka Jovic's deserved tap-in sealed victory for the Italians.

    Reaction to follow.

He's been dreadful for the last year and a bit, and Gary Mackay-Steven looks totally disinterested. That's his man that runs off the back of him, and he's got no idea where he is.

He's missed a few chances, Jovic, but that was a well constructed move. Hearts get caught out - too many players in positions from which they couldn't recover. It was a five-on-two in the end.

    He finally has his goal.

Hearts are caught out on the counter and Fiorentina pour forward, with Kouame squaring to Jovic who rifles in a deserved goal. It's been a superb performance from the Serbian striker this evening.

Couple of changes for La Viola, as Dodo and Alessandro Bianco come on. Sofyan Amrabat and captain Cristiano Biraghi.

Another corner is swung in for the visitors, and Fiorentina have another free header, but it goes over the bar.

Hearts have made two changes as well. Barrie McKay and Josh Ginnelly are off, with Gary Mackay-Steven and Alan Forrest. Resting them for Kilmarnock at the weekend, I imagine.

You could argue that Fiorentina were better against 11 men than against 10. They've taken their foot off the gas, they know this game is won.
