  1. Hopefully not another 0-0...published at 19:30 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2022

Man City v Sevilla (20:00 GMT)

City have won 81% of their home games in the Champions League since Guardiola took charge (26/32).

That's the highest win percentage with one club of any manager with at least 20 home games in the competition.

Their past two Champions League games have finished 0-0. The only previous time a Guardiola side had three straight draws in the competition was in April/May 2009, when he was in charge of Barcelona.

  2. 'Pep will be experimenting with the team'published at 19:28 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2022

Erling Haaland not playing will open up the gap for Julian Alvarez. This will be a good match for Pep Guardiola to plan post-World Cup. He'll be experimenting with the team now.

I believe Pep is happy with the Premier League table. The only reason he might be unhappy is because it is Mikel Arteta - his former assistant coach [who is top with Arsenal].

City have already qualified for the next stages of the Champions League so now he will just want big performance levels.

  3. The 30 years of change shaping the Champions Leaguepublished at 19:26 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2022

It is easy to forget where the Champions League came from.

Three decades ago European football's governing body Uefa sometimes didn't know what day games would be played until 48 hours before kick-off. In the first Champions League season, some of the players were still part-time.

The 1992-93 inaugural edition started with two knockout rounds between September and November. Leeds and Stuttgart ended up playing a neutral venue decider for their first-round tie, in front of 90,000 empty seats at Barcelona's Nou Camp - after the German side broke Uefa's rule on only fielding three foreigners.

Eight teams progressed to make two groups of four, with games played from November to April. The group winners met in the final. Marseille - who would have their 1993 French league title stripped over match-fixing - beat AC Milan 1-0 on 26 May.

Rangers went undefeated but finished just a point behind Marseille. Second to Milan were IFK Gothenburg.

"Before a home group game against Porto, me and a friend were at work at 7am and then played at 8.45pm," recalls ex-Gothenburg and Sweden midfielder Hakan Mild.

  4. 'We have to respect competition'published at 19:24 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2022

Chelsea v Dinamo Zagreb (20:00 GMT)

Despite Chelsea having already won Group E, manager Graham Potter said he would pick a "competitive" side and he has.

Dinamo Zagreb are bottom with four points but the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mason Mount, Jorginho and Kai Havertz all start tonight.

"I think we have to be competitive and respectful of the competition," said Potter.

"I don't think it's a time to be using young players just for the sake of it.

"There are still teams looking for points for their own qualification, so from our perspective we have to try and pick a team we think can win the game."

  5. 'Starting Palmer is a big statement'published at 19:21 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2022

Man City v Sevilla (20:00 GMT)

    Izzy Christiansen
Everton and England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

I do see a lot of similarities between Cole Palmer and Phil Foden in terms of the type of player they are. They like to carry the ball, they draw tackles, they like to play short, sharp football. I have seen that so often in the Manchester City methodology over the years. He's extremely talented. He is a few years behind Foden and could go on to do similar things. Getting a start tonight is a big statement from the manager.

  6. Can Juventus stay in Europe?published at 19:19 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2022

In Group H, Juventus host Paris St-Germain and Maccabi Haifa are at home to Benfica.

Whoever out of PSG and Benfica pick up more points in their final game will win the group. If they get the same points it will go down to goal difference (currently 8-4 to PSG).

The same is true of Juventus and Maccabi Haifa in the battle for the Europa League place (Juve lead -3 to -9).

  7. Who needs what in Group E?published at 19:17 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2022

Chelsea v Dinamo Zagreb (20:00 GMT)

Chelsea have already won Group E. Their job is done and they will be seeded for the last-16.

That means they will be at home for the second leg of their last-16 tie. The draw takes place on 7 November.

Tonight's opponents Dinamo Zagreb could still finish in the Europa League place (third) if they beat Chelsea AND Salzburg lose to AC Milan in the other match.

Milan will go through in second place with a draw or a win against Salzburg, but the Austrian side would go through with a victory.

  8. As it stands in Group Fpublished at 19:15 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2022

The two matches in Group F kicked off earlier and are now midway through the second halves.

Holders Real Madrid are on course to win the group as they have a 5-0 lead over Celtic, who are already out.

RB Leipzig, with their 4-0 lead over Shakhtar Donetsk, are going through as runners-up.

Shakhtar would drop into the Europa League after claiming third spot.

  9. Lewis gets first City startpublished at 19:13 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2022

    Man City v Sevilla (20:00GMT)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport at the Etihad Stadium

Seventeen-year-old defender Rico Lewis is given his first Manchester City start by Pep Guardiola.

Sergio Gomez is also included in a strong City line-up given they have already qualified as group winners.

Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Julian Alvarez given an added youth element to the City side with Kalvin Phillips still not fit enough for a place on the bench a week before Gareth Southgate names his England World Cup squad.

Man City XI: Ortega Moreno, Lewis, Dias, Laporte, Gomez, Gundogan, Palmer, Foden, Mahrez, Grealish, Alvarez.

Man City v Sevilla (20:00 GMT)

So what are the permutations in Group G where Manchester City face Sevilla and Copenhagen host Borussia Dortmund?

    None. There are no permutations.

City have won the group, Dortmund go through in second, Sevilla are in the Europa League and Copenhagen are out.

Nothing that happens today can change any of that.

  11. Postpublished at 19:08 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2022

Still lots to play for tonight with teams fighting for the top spot in their groups, some just looking to secure qualification and others who can finish third and ensure they drop into the Europa League as opposed to missing out on European football altogether for the rest of the season.

Here's a breakdown of each group in action tonight...

    Real Madrid 3-0 Celtic

Gareth Bale, deserving of the status of a Madrid great, was chased out of town. There was no love lost when many others involved in their astonishing five Champions Leagues since 2013-14 exited. Time moves on and so do the Madridismo. Quickly.

This is a club that lives for the European Cup. Winning it is sometimes not even enough. It's how they win it. It's the drama. The theatre.

The other day, the great Andres Iniesta spoke about Carlo Ancelotti's team and 37-year-old Luka Modric in particular. "Modric is among the best there has been and ever will be," he said of the Croat.

In a side where the age profile is getting younger, Modric is a mainstay, the one who continues to tie it all together.

This is what's irresistible about this Madrid team, the combination of experience (Modric, Toni Kroos and Benzema) and a thrusting youth. Currently Real are being linked with Dortmund's Jude Bellingham, 19, and precocious Palmeiras winger Endrick, 16. This is the direction of travel at the Bernabeu.

In 2018 Real won their 13th European Cup but the guts of that team has broken up. Keylor Navas, Varane, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Casemiro, Isco, Cristiano Ronaldo and Bale all played in that 3-1 win over Liverpool and have subsequently moved on.

In their place - more energy, more young stars. Recently, Kroos said that the vastly improved Federico Valverde was now in the top three midfielders in the world. Valverde is only 24.

  20. Winner takes all in Group Fpublished at 18:51 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2022

Two early games (17:45 GMT) in Group F - Real Madrid v Celtic and Shakhtar Donetsk v Leipzig.

There's not loads riding on the Madrid game (Real have qualified, Celtic are out) - follow BBC Scotland's coverage of that here.

Real lead 2-0 through Luka Modric and Rodrygo penalties.

But Shakhtar v Leipzig is winner takes all for a Champions League last-16 slot. A draw would be enough for Leipzig.

And the score is currently... 1-0 to Leipzig, with Christopher Nkunku bagging.
