A fine win for Birmingham to open up our weekend.

Saturday's action sees Carlos Corberan take charge of West Brom for the first time as they host Sheffield United.

Leaders Burnley are at home to Reading.

And Coventry, troubled again off the field, will try to continue their excellent form on it and move away from the relegation zone at home to Blackpool.

Join us then but from St Andrew's, goodnight.

There have not been too many great nights at St Andrew's in recent years.

But this one was sure one of them.

The strains of a UB40 classic, followed by an even more golden oldie by local favourite Tom Ross, ring round the ground as the Birmingham City players leave the field to a rapturous reception from the home fans.

It could have gone either way. But John Eustace's side did the job against his old club. What an atmosphere! Blues, Blues, Blues, Blues...

A very impressive victory for Birmingham.

They were jolly fortunate to go ahead early when Auston Trusty's blind flick flew over the goalkeeper.

But they were much the bigger threat in the first half and scored again through Emmanuel Longelo.

QPR dominated the second period but couldn't fashion a clear-cut chance until they were awarded a penalty.

But John Ruddy kept out Lyndon Dykes' powerful shot.

It was a night where nothing went right for Rangers, who also picked up a couple injuries.

All over bar the shouting now.

QPR desperately trying to get the ball into the area but in the end a wild shot is fired so far over the bar it may have cleared the stand on to the railway line.

Biggest roar of the night in Birmingham as John Ruddy dives to his right to brilliantly keep out Lyndon Dykes' well-struck penalty.

It was some sort of justice as it was a very soft spot-kick.

Ethan Laird had dived down low to try to head the ball and certainly seemed to make the most of it after making contact with Emmanuel Longelo's outstretched boot, as he plummeted forwards to the turf.

Blues have surely got to think they've got this won now.

Looks to be a knock to the face but he's coming back.

Niko: After a long week it is one of those nights when I should have gone to bed early.

A freak opening goal, injuries and a penalty saved - it hasn't been QPR's night but they're still going very well this season, overall...

Is that points sealed for Birmingham?

They now make a double change.

Troy Deeney makes way for Lukas Jutkiewicz.

And 18-year-old George Hall replaces Tahith Chong.

Sam Field also on for QPR.

    What a save!

Lyndon Dykes with a powerful strike to John Ruddy's right.

The Birmingham goalkeeper gets two big hands across to push it away.

Dykes went for power but couldn't find the corner and it was a good height for the goalkeeper.

A cross from the right towards the penalty area comes in the direction of Ethan Laird, and a clumsy challenge catches him in the head.

Yellow card for Birmingham defender Emmanuel Longelo.

Ethan Laird forward again for QPR.

He drifts in towards the area from the right and a clipped cross is towards Sinclair Armstrong.

Armstrong goes down but nothing coming from the referee and doesn't look even close to a foul on second look.

You can sense the increasing desperation about QPR as they try to claw something from this game - and avoid a second successive away defeat.

And, judging by the noise from the home fans, you can also sense that the Blues faithful are starting to think they've got this won.

It has been very competitive - as the five bookings would testify. But this Blues side are showing that they can outfight, as well 'out-football' teams, even as good as QPR.

On this evidence, the Blues owners (whoever they are right now, as City's long, drawn-out takeover saga drags on) are going to really wish they could get some of those missing seats back from under those big tarpaulins. As they may need to fill them!

Another nearly moment for the visitors.

Ilias Chair cut back on his right boot from the left and his cross finds Ben Amos at the near post but he can't glance the header, and just nods it into his own supporters behind the goal.

Chair then has a chance to shoot but fires straight at John Ruddy.

  19. YELLOW CARDpublished at 70 mins

    Birmingham 2-0 QPR

Another booking as QPR's Tim Iroegbunam gets the wrong side of his man and brings him down on half-way.

Birmingham then almost fashion a chance from the left towards the near post but Rangers get it away and are still alive here - but need a spark.

Tahith Chong picks up possession for the hosts on the right wing, darts infield and is chopped down 30 yards out.

But Juninho Bacuna's free-kick is overhit.
