From one GOAT to another?

Sheffield United striker Billy Sharp hasn't quite had the career of Argentina superstar Lionel Messi but the 36-year-old has scored more than his share of winning goals in his long career.

His 249th league goal proved to be the difference tonight as the Blades claimed a 2-1 win to close to within three points of Championship leaders Burnley.

Wigan, in Kolo Toure's first home game in charge, are a work in progress but they'll need to sharpen (pun only half intended) up at the back if they're to climb out of the relegation zone.

There were some moments of magic from the Sheffield United players.

They could have put the game to bed earlier but didn't.

That man Billy Sharp scores again and he just keeps going from strength to strength.

It's a merry Christmas for Sheffield United, they close the gap on league leaders Burnley to three points but they had to work for it at the DW Stadium.

A John Egan header gave them an early lead before Billy Sharp made it 2-0 after the break with a quality low finish.

Nathan Broadhead's tap in halved the Blades' lead and there were some nervy moments but the the away side did enough to hold on.

Kolo Toure's first home match as Latics boss ends in defeat and they remain second from bottom.

Sheffield United are now five points clear of third-placed Blackburn.

Is this the chance?

Will Keane knocks down a long ball for the Max Power but he can't get over his effort and it sails into the stand.

It was a fair way out it has to be said.

Five minutes added on.

Can the Blades hold out?

Iliman Ndiaye's race is run for the Blades.

Another strong showing from the talented young forward.

A great goal-saving challenge there to prevent Wigan equalising.

GREAT defending from Anel Ahmedhodzic.

Lovely play down Wigan down their right and the cross is sent in for Ashley Fletcher, just on, to tap in from close ranger but the Bosnia international gets across to divert it out for a corner.

Could be a match-winning challenge that.

George Baldock plays a great chipped ball over the static Wigan backline and Tommy Doyle races on to it.

It just wont sit for the on-loan Manchester City man and the home side manage to get it behind for a corner.

Sheffield United fans were having some fun in the away end when they were 2-0 up.

They've been raucous all game - 'tis the season and all that, but if Wigan come back and level this up they'll not be feeling quite so chipper on the way home.

Now the Blades make some changes.

Goalscorer Billy Sharp and James McAtee are off and Oli McBurnie and Tommy Doyle are on.

Two like-for-like swaps.

It's 249 league goals in his career for Sharp now.

Still no changes from the away side.

The home side have gone to their bench four times, although at least one was injury-enforced.

Senegal international Iliman Ndiaye is having some season.

Back after his exploits for his country in Qatar, he always looks a threat when he gets on the ball and I don't think he'll be in this league next year, regardless of whether the Blades go up.

He wins a free-kick 25 yards out as James McClean trips him.

Oli Norwood makes decent connection with his effort but it flies just over the bar.

This is crying out to be freshened up for Sheffield United.

You've got the best bench and best squad in the division but you're not using it.

It's so frustrating.

I realise that this is undermined by the month the Championship had off for the first rounds of the World Cup, but that Nathan Broadhead goal is the first the Blades have conceded away from home since 19 October.

Sheffield United were cruising before it but they're having to work now.

What a difference a goal makes.

Ciaran Clark is caught on the ball in the right-back position for the Blades and, as Callum Lang looks to motor towards goal, the Republic of Ireland international just cynically trips him from behind.
