  1. Lukaku set to miss opening two gamespublished at 12:07 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2022

The injury blows continue for some national teams with the news Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku will not play for Belgium at the World Cup until at least their final Group F match against Croatia, according to AFP.

The forward did not take part in the Red Devils' first proper training session since they arrived in Qatar on Friday as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury.

He has played just twice for Inter since August after first picking up the injury in a 3-1 defeat at Lazio.

Lukaku scored a 4-0 win against Viktoria Plzen that ensured Inter's passage to the last 16 of the Champions League but then injured his hamstring again a few days later.

Belgium begin their World Cup campaign on Wednesday against Canada and also take on Morocco before facing Croatia.

I also met Ibrahim Khalfan on the way in to the media centre.

Who?! I can hear you asking.

Khalfan was one of Qatar's greatest ever footballers during the 1970s and 80s, winning over 70 caps for the national team.

I came over in May to interview him, in what turned out to be a fascinating chat.

  3. Moore 'can't wait' to knock out Englandpublished at 12:03 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2022

Wales have a few English-born players in their squad, but there will be no divided loyalties in Qatar.

Towering Wales striker Kieffer Moore says he "can't wait" to knock England out of the World Cup.

Wales open their campaign against the United States tomorrow (19:00 GMT).

Manager Robert Page's side then face Iran four days later, and complete the group stage against neighbours England on Tuesday, 29 November.

Former England C cap Moore says "it would be amazing" to put the country of his birth out of the tournament.

The 6ft 5ins Bournemouth forward, 30, added: "There will be no mixed loyalties. I can't remember much [about being capped by England C]. It was Estonia maybe and I think I came on towards the end of the game."

Torquay-born Moore qualifies via his Welsh grandfather from Llanrug in north Wales, and has already headed a Premier League goal this season past England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

It came as the Cherries beat Everton 2-0 earlier this month, with Moore saying: "It is nice to get one up already."

  4. Wales boss Robert Page and the valleys football factorypublished at 11:59 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2022

    Dafydd Pritchard
    BBC Sport Wales in Doha

BBC Sport Wales has visited Pentre to take a look at the valleys football factory that produced so many of Wales' great coaches.

Nottingham Forest head coach Steve Cooper and new Southampton boss Nathan Jones played there in the early 1990s, while former Wales manager Jayne Ludlow grew up nearby and took her first steps towards a stellar playing career with Arsenal at Treorchy Comprehensive School.

Even closer to Pentre Park, barely a goal-kick away, is the house where Jimmy Murphy lived. He was the last man to lead Wales to a World Cup back in 1958, and there is a blue plaque outside the house to mark his achievement.

Murphy remains the only person to have managed that feat - but that will change on Monday when Robert Page and his Wales side face the United States in Qatar.

Remarkably, Page is another product of this Rhondda football factory and, as he says himself, his valleys roots are an intrinsic part of the man he is today.

Senegal manager Aliou Cisse was asked about Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy's up and down form at club level.

He insisted he is a "top level goalkeeper" and has no doubts he will step up to the challenge at this World Cup.

"He is one of the best in the world, that is still the case," said Cisse.

"I am sure he will prove in the World Cup he is one of those top goalkeepers."

  12. How Qatar built a team 'ready to surprise' at the World Cuppublished at 11:38 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2022

Qatar national teamImage source, Getty Images

Qatar have big ambitions for this year's World Cup - not just in terms of hosting it successfully but also regarding how far their national team can progress.

This will be their first appearance in the tournament, having qualified by virtue of being hosts, and getting through the group stage is their minimal target.

That may seem a lofty ambition for a country with relatively little football history and a population of Qatari nationals smaller than Leicester.

But they are no pushovers. They are the Asian champions and have spent at least a generation building for this moment, so how have Qatar created a football team they believe is capable of surprising the world and advancing to the knockout stages?

    Hello from Al Khor.

We're only a 45 minute away from Doha, but have arrived super early at the Al Bayt Stadium, which plays host to the opening game of the 2022 World Cup between home nation Qatar and Ecuador.

Official guidance was to get here six hours early in order to avoid traffic and this being one of the venues that doesn't stand on the metro line.

It was a who's who of footballing stars in the car park with the likes of Alessandro Del Piero, Kaka, Marcel Desailly, Ruud Gullit, John Terry and Gary Neville all spotted.

And yes, for those who know me, there was plenty of selfie action going on.

I am currently across Senegal's media conference hearing from manager Aliou Cisse and Monaco winger Krepin Diatta.

Cisse was asked about the absence of Sadio Mane and he said it is "obviously a shame" and a "great challenge" for the team.

"All coaches build teams around their best player, that is also the case for us," he added.

"We have a strong team as well, with experienced and young players ready to rise to the challenge. I am sure we have a strong enough team."

Diatta added: "We all know Sadio is an extremely important player for our team. We are determined to do what we can without him.

"When you talk about the spirit and the morale, of course it affects you. He is our best player and a leader in that respect.

"It is a big loss but we show teamwork and are good together. I am sure we will get good results at this World Cup."
