Ben Davies says Wales have ambitions of achieving "something special" in Qatar as they prepare to play their first World Cup game since 1958.

Davies, 29, was part of the Wales side who ended a 58-year absence from major tournaments by qualifying for the past two European Championships, reaching a historic first semi-final in 2016.

Wales face the United States in Doha on Monday in their World Cup opener.

"It's a success for us just to qualify for a World Cup," said Davies.

"But that doesn't mean we don't have a lot of ambition to do something special in this competition.

"Euro 2016 was something new to us all, travelling around Europe to play in a top competition, that was something different.

"There's a similar feeling now, a new feeling for us facing teams we've not played against before."

England's Eric Dier says alcohol isn't needed "to create a great atmosphere" after Fifa announced a last-minute alcohol ban for World Cup stadiums.

Fifa changed its policy two days before the tournament kicks off in Qatar.

Alcohol was set to be served "in select areas within stadiums", despite its sale being strictly controlled in the Muslim country.

"I'd like to think you can enjoy yourself with or without alcohol," Dier said on Saturday.

"It's up to us as a team and every team in the tournament to bring great football, exciting football and that's what is going to create a great atmosphere in the stadiums."

  4. 'I feel Qatari, I feel gay, I feel disabled'published at 15:29 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2022

Fifa president Gianni Infantino has created a lot of headlines by accusing the west of "hypocrisy" and says Qatar 2022 will be the "best World Cup ever".

In an extraordinary monologue at a news conference in Doha, Infantino spoke for nearly an hour and made a passionate defence of Qatar and the tournament.

He opened by saying: "Today I have strong feelings. Today I feel Qatari, I feel Arab, I feel African, I feel gay, I feel disabled, I feel a migrant worker."

Sorry Chris in Devon (14:23) but it isn't about money. For many it's about the reported thousands who have died in the construction of the stadia and other infrastructure and also the human rights issues.

Kieran Trippier's fifth-minute free-kick gave England the lead in their 2018 World Cup semi-final, although Croatia fought back to win it 2-1 after extra time to reach the final, where they lost 4-2 to France

England defender Kieran Trippier, speaking to BBC TV: "This is a fantastic group of players and the last two tournaments we took great steps. It is a great opportunity for us, I believe in this team, in every player here, we just need to go into the first game with that winning mentality. We believe as a team.

"I am just excited. It is another opportunity to stamp our authority as a team and as an individual and to do well. I wouldn't say I am desperate, just excited and raring to go.

"It has been tough in the heat but we are just trying to get used to it. It is hot and we are training at these times to get used to it when the game comes. We are preparing for every moment."

Trippier scored a free-kick for England in their 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat against Croatia in Russia four years ago and felt there were similarities between that campaign and this one.

He added: "It is similar to Russia. They have done an amazing job where we are staying. When you walk into your room there are photos of your wife and children, there are places you can relax.

"Everyone is trying to enjoy themselves and that is the main thing because you are away for a long time and you have to keep yourself busy.

"It was a dream for me to score in Russia, I couldn't believe it."

  12. 'A leader with or without the armband'published at 14:47 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2022

    England

More from England defender Kieran Trippier, speaking to BBC TV: "I don't need the [captain's] armband to make a difference, I have always been vocal on the pitch. For me it doesn’t matter – I don’t mean that in a disrespectful way, I just feel I'm a leader with or without the armband.

"I will play anywhere and give everything for the team. I will do anything for the team to make sure we win as a team.

"I feel like I am playing the best football of my career and we [Newcastle] have had a good start, I just need to take that into the World Cup.

"It was really important at the start of the season for Eddie Howe to stamp his authority on how he wanted the team to play and it is just confidence we have created. We all know our roles and have just tried to perform at the highest level we can do, we just need to keep going."

  13. 'Absolutely delighted to be here'published at 14:42 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2022

    England

England and Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier told BBC TV: "I love coming away with England. From my first camp to now I still get goosebumps every time I put the shirt on.

"When I went up with the team, I still get that excitement. It’s a dream, it’s an honour to represent my country and to be in a World Cup is special, very special. It is getting so close now, you are getting those goosebumps and ready to go.

"I am just absolutely delighted to be here. I have no regrets. I maybe took the long road but I am absolutely delighted how my international career has gone.

"This is my third tournament, but you look around the team and you have Phil [Foden], Jude [Bellingham], all the young players who have great experience already. They have played in a Euros final and Champions League games. There is not really much to say to them because they are so experienced at a young age.

"Myself, Hendo [Jordan Henderson] and Walks [Kyle Walker] – the more experienced players – will be there if they need anything though."

Portugal's Bernardo Silva: "It is a team that has Cristiano. He's part of it, obviously, but when he's not, we know how to respond, as we have shown lately. Whenever he wasn't there, we have responded well.

"We're all set. There is 26 of us, it doesn't matter if it's one or the other.

"There is no weird atmosphere between Bruno Fernandes and Ronaldo, I don't see a big deal. It's a shame to be talking only about this."

I'm going to have to agree with Kix at 13:56, I've got my wall chart ready to go, I've been counting down the days since the first of this month, I can't wait! Maybe England can pull off a Christmas miracle and win it... well you never know

    Jack

I'm as excited for this tournament as any other. Football (like most areas) was corrupted long ago by money and it surprises me that people are just noticing now. I am hoping the exposure brings some meaningful change whilst also enjoying Messi and Ronaldo et al on the big stage for the last time.
