    England v USA (Fri, GMT)

    England

England defender Harry Maguire on playing alongside John Stones: "I have known John for years, we played against each other a lot as youngsters in Yorkshire, coming through the ranks. He was at Barnsley and I was at Sheffield United.

"We have been really close, I was really proud to see him progress playing for England when I was just a fan. Now I am playing alongside him for a lot of my caps, which has been great.

"We know each other's games, each other's strengths and weaknesses and the bond is there for all to see."

  3. Southgate not thinking beyond the USA matchpublished at 16:42 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2022

England v USA (Fri, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England's manager is also asked about which teams in the World Cup concern him the most so far:

"It's a very competitive tournament, we're only concerning ourselves with the USA because there's no point in looking any further than that.

"I know some people have been surprised at the other results but I haven't. We watched Japan play the USA and knew the quality that they had. There's some very good teams that might not be recognised by anybody, but I think in football teams like Japan would be."

  4. 'We have to try to make history'published at 16:40 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2022

England v USA (Fri, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate on attempting to beat USA in a World Cup game for the first time: "Tomorrow we have to try to make history. We are good at talking highly of ourselves as a nation on the basis of very little evidence.

"We will play a highly motivated team and have huge respect for our opposition. We know the quality they have and we will have to be at our best.

"The risk is to think that because we played well the other day we can take it into the next game.

"I don't think we will underestimate the USA team at all."

  5. USA have a lot of players in top European leaguespublished at 16:38 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2022

England v USA (Fri, 19:00 GMT)

    England

Speaking through a translator Gareth Southgate is asked about what he expects ahead of the game against the Americans compared to Monday's match against Iran.

Southgate answers: "Tomorrow's game will be very different to the first match. They are a team that press the ball really well.

"With respect, a level of player which has experience of playing in top European leagues.

"In terms of tomorrow it is not going to be a game in the pattern of the previous one."

Southgate is also asked about the current crop of players in the squad.

He answers: "In terms of this generation of players this is a good time for English football at junior level and with the women's team.

"The aim is to have sustained challenged in the latter stages of the competitions.

"These players are putting the country on the map and we have got to keep doing that.

"The first objective is to qualify and if it takes all three games so be it."

England v USA (Fri, 19:00 GMT)

Coming to the end of the press conference Gareth Southgate is questioned on whether England are at an advantage or not with the World Cup being held during the winter rather than the summer.

Southgate says: "There has been a lot of discussion about it being an advantage for us, but we never really bought into that theory.

"We have tried to psychologically refresh the players.

"Climate-wise we are fortunate we haven't got a 13:00 kick off.

"Now we go into 10:00 kicks offs.

"I think the conditions have been beautiful for football.

"You like those balmy nights where it is a nice temperature, the pitches have been fantastic.

"I am very happy in the environment we're playing in."

  8. Defence need to liven up on keeping clean sheetspublished at 16:33 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2022

England v USA (Fri, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate is asked about the criticism which has faced Harry Maguire in the lead up to the World Cup and what he means to him.

"People say for me, but it is for us when we talk about England," he answers.

    "It's his importance for England.

"We wanted to build our team on the capability of playing out from the back, Harry and John Stones have provided that incredible platform to build on.

"That is the start point. They defend well, we have a good spirit among the defenders, they fight for each other and have a determination.

"They take pride in keeping clean sheets - although they need to liven up on that at the moment.

"It is great for harry to get his 50th cap - it is well deserved."

  9. 'It would be a brave decision to leave Kane out'published at 16:29 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2022

England v USA (Fri, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate speaking ahead of Friday's World Cup group game against USA: "Harry Kane is good. He came through tests with no problems. It would be a brave decision to leave him out of the starting team.

"All teams have the same recovery period. It is a little shorter than in previous tournaments. Only will only benefit us if we get through the group stages, where we might have a longer period to recover as you get through the competition."

England v USA (Fri, 19:00 GMT)

England manager Gareth Southgate speaking ahead of Friday's World Cup group game against USA: "We really like our base camp. We don't have the TV on much but I am sure the lads are following stuff on social media and the internet. We talk about the importance of ignoring all the talk.

"The future king (Prince William) came in and mentioned that to the lads. We could not have paid him to give the lads a better message and i am really grateful for that.

"You have got to ignore the noise. In tournaments there is always a need for information, but I have lived through lot of tournament football now. It is important to stay calm and focus on things you can affect. Keeping your energy for those is key."

  11. Criticism 'part and parcel' of the gamepublished at 16:24 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2022

When asked about the criticism around Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Maguire said: "As a footballer nobody likes being criticised but I think it's part and parcel of the game. I've played with Cristiano Ronaldo for the last couple of years and he's one of the greatest players to ever kick a football.

"He gets criticised daily, so if it's going to happen to him and the position I'm in playing for Manchester United, it's going to happen to each and every one of us. You've just got to work hard, go into training, do your best and that's all you can do."

"No I have great belief in myself, I go on the training pitch, I work as hard as possible, I give my all, I give my best and that gives you good preparation to go into a game and perform to the best level."

"I went into the Euros off the back of an eight to 10 week injury so I wasn't worried about the lack of game time, although obviously I want to play every week for my club."

"We have to be comfortable that we know what we are standing for.

"If we are rushing to be seen to be doing something then we could make an error which doesn't land well.
