    Belgium 1-0 Canada

Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne celebrated Belgium's victory with his wife, Michele Lacroix, and their three children, who were in the stands to watch the 31-year-old take on Canada.

    Wholesome scenes.

  2. Japan fans clean up after gamepublished at 08:07 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2022

    Germany 1-2 Japan

The magnitude of their win over Germany could have seen them go off into the night in celebration but Japan's fans demonstrated that the best manners and habits are ingrained, no matter the situation.

Come full-time, the stands of sporting stadia are usually littered with used food trays and wrappers and empty drinks cups, left behind for someone else to clean up.

But not when the Samurai Blue are in town.

Their players had barely left the pitch when the Japanese in the crowd pressed pause on the party to tidy up after themselves at Khalifa International Stadium in Qatar.

They did the same at the World Cup in Russia four years ago, most notably after a 3-2 defeat by Belgium in the last 16, and again in the 2022 tournament opener between hosts Qatar and Ecuador on Sunday - a match their team wasn't involved in.

In Japan, cleanliness is a part of the culture and is drilled into its people from early childhood.

  3. Postpublished at 08:01 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2022

    Belgium 1-0 Canada

Canada have now lost all four of their World Cup matches without scoring a single goal but crikey, they were close to ending that sequence against a fancied Belgium side on Wednesday.

Boss John Herdman sums up their performance perfectly, albeit in a rather more considered way than an old coach of mine, who would easily have got at least 40 expletives into that 40 seconds.

  4. Batshuayi fires Belgium to victorypublished at 07:56 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2022

Michy Batshuayi celebrated his World Cup goal with a little dance and a smiling salute to the Belgium fans inside the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan.

  5. Gavi breaks Pele's recordpublished at 07:52 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2022

    Spain 7-0 Costa Rica

    Chris Bevan
BBC Sport at Al Thumama Stadium, Qatar

Gavi is the youngest man to play for Spain at a World Cup and his goal made him the youngest goalscorer at a finals since Brazilian Pele in 1958.

The way he took it was worthy of the legend mentioned in that statistic, and capped a display which was mature beyond his years.

He was not the only young Spanish player to dazzle either, with 19-year-old Pedri also enjoying an outstanding evening in midfield.

Costa Rica were hugely disappointing but also barely allowed a kick, managing only 231 passes to 1,043 from Spain, while failing to register a single effort at goal.

Spain had lost their opening matches at the past three World Cups, including in 2010 when they went on to win the tournament.

This time, they could not have made a more emphatic start, and will be in confident mood when they face Germany in their next game, knowing another win would all but eliminate their great European rivals.

Belgium laboured to victory in their opening World Cup game as they were pushed all the way by an outstanding effort from Canada.

Canada dominated large portions of the game but were wasteful in front of goal, particularly when Alphonso Davies saw a first-half penalty saved by Belgium keeper Thibaut Courtois.

Courtois also had to save well from Alistair Johnston, but Canada were undone against the run of play on the stroke of half-time when Michy Batshuayi collected Toby Alderweireld's long ball and fired a powerful left-foot finish past Milan Borjan.

Jonathan David wasted a glorious headed chance to draw Canada level and Courtois also saved from Cyle Larin. Canada were also left nursing a sense of injustice after they had two presentable penalty appeals ignored in the first half.

Canada continued to push forward in the second half but it was Roberto Martinez's side who closed out the win, despite a performance that made a mockery of their status as second in the world rankings.

  14. Teenager Gavi stars as Spain hammer Costa Ricapublished at 07:25 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2022

    Spain 7-0 Costa Rica

Who said that this Spain team would struggle for goals?

Luis Enrique's side ran riot against sorry Costa Rica, smashing seven without reply.

Ferran Torres scored twice in what was a stroll from start to finish for the 2010 champions.

But the pick of their seven goals was Gavi's outstanding volleyed finish, with the Barcelona teenager using the outside of his foot to steer a dropping ball home via the post and become the youngest World Cup goalscorer since Pele.

  15. Germany players cover mouths amid row with Fifapublished at 07:20 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2022

    Germany 1-2 Japan

This game was also notable for what happened before kick-off as the Germany players covered their mouths during the team photograph.

The gesture follows Fifa threatening players with a booking for wearing the OneLove armband during games in Qatar.

"It was a sign, a message that we wanted to send out. We wanted to convey the message that Fifa is silencing us," said boss Hansi Flick.

The captains of seven European nations were set to wear it to promote diversity and inclusion.

No disciplinary action will be taken against Germany.

    Germany 1-2 Japan

    Shamoon Hafez
BBC Sport at Khalifa International Stadium

It just had to be them, didn't it?

Football has a funny way of bringing up narratives, and two Japan players - who play their club football in Germany - conspired to score the goals that defeated the Europeans at the World Cup.

After Saudi Arabia's seismic victory over Argentina on Tuesday, this was another huge shock in Qatar.

It left Germany's players silently slipping away from Khalifa International Stadium at full-time, and the Japan squad celebrating in front of their ecstatic following.

"It is a dream come true," winning goalscorer Takuma Asano told BBC Radio 5 Live. "We knew we could do it, we had a dream like this.

"Skipper and former Southampton defender Maya Yoshida said: "We present Asia and many supporters from Asia supporting us today. This is the beauty of football."

  20. Japan comeback stuns Germanypublished at 07:03 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2022

    Germany 1-2 Japan

Let's start with yet another seismic World Cup shock as Japan fought back from a goal down to beat four-time winners Germany 2-1.

Germany dominated a frenetic match for large spells but failed to capitalise on their pressure - before Japan caused the Khalifa International Stadium to erupt into a mix of celebration and surprise.

Substitute Takuma Asano squeezed in a thumping strike from a tight angle to make it 2-1 to Japan and ran over to the photographers in the corner of the stadium in sheer delight.

Manchester City's Ilkay Gundogan had given Germany the lead from the penalty spot in the first half, before Japan substitute Ritsu Doan equalised in the 75th minute.
