Based on what I've seen of them so far, if Poland get in the France half, they will be lucky. They just don't seem able to get the ball up the pitch to Robert Lewandowski, who is so isolated.

The Poles are big and slow and I think they were lucky to get out of Group C.

France can chuck in a poor performance every so often and I know this has been a World Cup of shocks so I am asking to get egg on my face... but I only see this going one way.

    Prediction: 4-0

    • This will be the second meeting between France and Poland at the World Cup and first since their third-place play-off match in the 1982 tournament - a 3-2 win for Poland.
    • France are unbeaten in their last seven meetings with Poland in all competitions (W3 D4), with their last defeat coming in a friendly in August 1982 (0-4).
    • Since the last 16 stage was introduced in 1986, France have appeared at this stage five times and progressed on every occasion in 1986, 1998, 2006, 2014 and 2018.
    • This will be Poland's first match in the knockout stage of a World Cup since 1986, when they lost 4-0 to Brazil in the round of 16.
    • Poland are facing the reigning champions at a World Cup for the third time, having avoided defeat in their previous two such games.
  3. Safe hands Szczesnypublished at 12:53 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2022

    France v Poland (15:00 GMT)

Is Wojciech Szczesny in for a busy shift today against France? Probably.

But at least the Poland goalkeeper has some decent stats to fall back on:

    • Szczesny has a 90% save percentage at the 2022 World Cup, and had saved each of his first 16 shots on target faced in the tournament prior to Alexis Mac Allister’s goal for Argentina.
    • Szczesny has saved a penalty in each of his last two games at the World Cup, while no goalkeeper on record has ever stopped three penalties in a single edition of the tournament (since 1966, excluding shootouts).

Brazil v South Korea (Mon, 19:00 GMT)

We'll just step away from France v Poland build-up for a second.

Neymar tweeted last night that he felt "good" after suffering from an ankle injury picked up in Brazil's opening group match with Serbia.

There were doubts over whether he would play in their last 16 tie with South Korea tomorrow.

So, is the Paris St-Germain forward fit?

    Yes, according to coach Tite.

Czeslaw Michniewicz is hoping Poland, in the second round for the first time in 36 years, can improve service to star striker Robert Lewandowski after he was unable to have an influence in their last outing.

"We played difficult passes in easy situations, we didn't create enough opportunities for Robert. Strikers like that, they need to be near the penalty box," the Poland boss said.

"In order to take advantage of every team we need to bring the strikers to the right zone. You can't normally score from your own half."

Didier Drogba BBC Sport columnist graphicImage source, .

For me, a complete striker is someone who can create an assist as well as score - someone who can change the game within one action.

I am going to tell you how I became that type of player myself, but I don't think there are many of them at this World Cup.

Some teams even prefer to play without a striker at all, but in the big moments I always think you need someone to finish the actions, as well as start them.

England have Harry Kane, who I love to I watch, but France's Kylian Mbappe is the player who stands out as the being the best at doing all of those things I have mentioned, all together.

If you put Mbappe in a centre-forward's position, he will score goals but still come back and try and make chances for other people - you can see he was doing that a lot in France's first two games in Qatar.

Kylian Mbappe has had nine more shots (16) and five more shots on target (seven) than any France player in the 2022 World Cup.

Only Just Fontaine (13) has more World Cup goals for France than Mbappe (seven), who scored twice in the round of 16 in 2018 against Argentina.

  12. Team news: Lloris set for 142nd cappublished at 12:13 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2022

    France v Poland (15:00 GMT)

Didier Deschamps made nine changes for the defeat by Tunisia but is likely to revert to the starting line-up which clinched qualification by beating Denmark last weekend.

Captain Hugo Lloris will win his 142nd cap, equalling the French record held by Lilian Thuram.

Czeslaw Michniewicz may bring in fresh legs after Poland were outclassed in Wednesday's 2-0 defeat by Argentina.

Forward Karol Swiderski began that game but was substituted at half-time and could be replaced by striker Arkadiusz Milik, who began the 2-0 victory against Saudi Arabia.

France manager Didier Deschamps says the World Cup holders must "respect what Poland do" before the two nations meet in the last 16 in Qatar on Sunday.

The 2018 winners are the first reigning champions to reach the knockout stage at a World Cup since Brazil in 2006.

They sealed qualification with a game to spare before a surprise 1-0 loss to Tunisia in their final group game.

"Today, even a great nation, if she is not ready, can have unpleasant situations," Deschamps warned.

  15. Your England team to face Senegal in last 16published at 12:00 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2022

    England v Senegal (19:00 GMT)

After Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden came into the England team and scored all three goals against Wales in their final World Cup group game, it left manager Gareth Southgate with a selection headache.

We asked you to pick a starting XI for Sunday's last-16 tie against Senegal at 19:00 GMT - and this is who you picked.

Both Foden and Rashford are in your team, with Foden the fourth most popular player (88%) and Rashford (76%) the most wanted on both the right and left wing.

Manchester City defender John Stones (95%) was an almost universal selection, with midfielder Jude Bellingham and centre-back Harry Maguire close behind.

Kyle Walker (57%) edged out Kieran Tripper (44%) to take the right-back slot, while Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka (53%) takes the final place in the team, meaning Foden drops into the midfield three.

There is no place for Chelsea's Mason Mount (18%) and Raheem Sterling (15%), who started England's first two group games against Iran and USA.

Back to England now and what team Gareth Southgate will send out against Senegal is the big talking point.

Does he stick with the same side that beat Wales by three goals in the final group game or does he have a little tinker with one eye on a possible quarter-final meeting with France - if both teams come through their last 16 matches today that is.

Rio Ferdinand and Alan Shearer are up first with their selections...
