England captain Harry Kane is asked about how the squad has approached this tournament and if there is more belief in the group going into Saturday's game against the reigning world champions France:

"I think looking back at 2018 we didn't really know what to expect. We went with the belief we could win but it was almost a new experience for a lot of us. We got to the semi-final and were over the moon but whether we had the full belief to go and win the tournament I'm not sure.

"We lost in the Euros by a couple of kicks of the ball and the belief has been building and building over the last five years. We have entered this tournament hoping and believing we can win and it. We have to got to a stage we expected to be at and now it is about trying to push on.

"We go into the [France] game with more belief than we did in 2018."

Ousmane Dembele is lightning quick for France. He's been playing brilliantly for Barcelona. You've got to be careful not to see them as a one-man team, although Kylian Mbappe is the best player in the world in my opinion.

Olivier Giroud keeps scoring goals. We've taken him for granted over the years since he played in England but he is a handful. But I see so much attacking quality and options for England, it would be silly to overly focus on France.

Kyle Walker has played against Mbappe many times and not struggled. Hopefully we are well-equipped.

There are three reasons why Jordan Henderson plays; he protects the right-hand side wherever Kylian Mbappe is going to be, he can press teams and has the experience.

But him being in there and the responsible role he plays frees up Jude Bellingham.

Gareth Southgate speaking to BBC Sport Kelly Somers on Raheem Sterling: “I think he’s in a better place in that he feels that he can come back in and has had the time he needs to help his family.

"Whether he’s going to have done enough to be involved in the game is a different matter.

“He’s had two long flights and missed a lot of training with the team, so when we’re going into the level of game where you need to be fully on it.

"It’s great for us that we’ve got the option of having him back with us, that he’s back with the group, but in terms of involvement for this game, that’s a bit more complicated.”

Lauriza Sasaki, 26, a mechanical engineer, is watching the Brazil-Croatia match in Sao Paulo.

She worked until 10am today and will make up her hours later.

"When it comes to football, it’s passed on from generation to generation, it brings family and friends together and its a big celebration in our country.

"In recent times we’ve been really divided because of politics and football brings everyone together - independently of politics, beliefs, social class, football is something that unites everyone.

"We are together for the same objective."

    HT: Croatia 0-0 Brazil

    BBC One

Croatia v Brazil is all square at the break. Just the two shots on target as well.

Not exactly the classic everyone was hoping for but there's still time and hardly unexpected.

Brazil have failed to score in the first half of six of their last seven World Cup games while Croatia have failed to score a first-half goal in four of their five games.

Mark Chapman, Alex Scott, Jurgen Klinsmann and Michah Richards are chewing the fat on that over on BBC One at the moment.

I've always thought Jordan Pickford has excelled when playing for England albeit the statistics don't always back every point you want to make up as I found out when I asked Opta for some earlier.

Since Pickford made his Three Lions debut on 10th November 2017, England have won 29 of the matches he has played in with a win ratio of 59%, while they have conceded an average of 0.7 goals per game.

Without him England have played 19, won 13, average goals against has been 0.5 per game and the win ratio is 68%, though I suspect there may be a decent chunk of friendly matches in there against slightly weaker opposition which obviously would skew things.

Gareth Southgate speaking to BBC Sport's Kelly Somers: “What is the stand-out thing is that he’s handled being the England number one really well. It’s not an easy role to have, there’s a lot of focus on it, a lot of spotlight.

"There have been credible alternatives at certain times that put that position under pressure but he’s maintained a really high level of performance for us right through that period.

“It’s a fantastic individual achievement. There’s still only a low number of players that get to 50 caps and to do that you’ve got to have a decent period of time as an England international.

"For them it’s important and that experience for us, you do go through different experiences that England nights and tournaments bring.”

Popstar, Robbie Williams treated the England team to a private concert at their hotel on Wednesday night.

In a video posted on his Instagram account, the 48-year-old posed alongside Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire, saying: "Hi, I’m Robbie Williams. I’m at the England camp with the lads. How lucky I am. Come see me at the Doha Golf Club tonight. You know what to do.”

A Football Association spokesman said: “It was just a private performance within an outdoor area of the team hotel. Arranged via the players and enjoyed by all.”

However, some activists have criticised Williams' for performing in a country with a controversial human rights record in terms of LGBT, women and workers' rights.

Williams, however, has defied criticism of his decision, telling the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, external: “Of course, I don’t condone any abuses of human rights anywhere. But, that being said, if we’re not condoning human rights abuses anywhere, then it would be the shortest tour the world has ever known: I wouldn’t even be able to perform in my own kitchen.”

  19. Why fine margins matter when you are marking Mbappepublished at 15:13 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2022

England v France (Sat, 19:00 GMT)

    Rio FerdinandImage source, BBC Sport

Stop Kylian Mbappe and you stop France - he is the only reason I fear them.

The good news for England is that Kyle Walker is definitely fast enough to deal with Mbappe - he is probably the only defender on the planet who would be happy to take him on in a race, one versus one.

But this battle is not just going to be about raw pace alone. Mbappe's intelligence makes Walker's task on Saturday much harder than that.

To get through it, Walker is going to need some help out there, so the team's approach and the focus of the players around him will be crucial too.

It is going to be fascinating to watch, and success or failure for England could come down to the finest of margins - Mbappe knows one tiny lapse is all it takes, and he will be away.
