  2. 'Feels like we have been playing together a long time'

    England v France (19:00 GMT)

Jordan Henderson has been speaking about England's midfield trio - himself, Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham - who impressed against Senegal.

"It has only been a couple of games we have played together so it is still quite new, but it feels we have been playing together a long time," Henderson said.

"So far it has worked well.

"We compliment each other in different ways and are able to play to our strengths."

  3. The historical ties binding Portugal and Morocco

    Morocco v Portugal (15:00 GMT)

    Portugal Correspondent, Lisbon

Portugal fans waving a Moroccan flag

Rabat is the closest foreign capital to Lisbon and bilateral relations are good.

But commentators here joke that a win for the national team would avenge the battle of Alcacer-Quibir (El-Ksar el Kebir, in what is now northern Morocco). In 1578, the flower of Portugal's nobility was massacred in a doomed attempt by their young king, Sebastian, to regain lost territory.

Since he died without an heir, his uncle, Philip II of Spain, seized the Portuguese throne and the country lost its independence, only to be restored in 1640. But Sebastian’s body was never found and the belief spread in the meantime that Dom Sebastiao would one day emerge from the mists to save Portugal.

It's a metaphor still used today.

Cristiano Ronaldo was long seen as the Dom Sebastiao who, with his record goalscoring feats, would save Portugal - but the mantle now seems to have passed to young pretender Goncalo Ramos.

  4. Morocco fans 'have faith' in their side

    Morocco v Portugal (15:00 GMT)

A local from Rabat with his vuvuzela

“Here we go, I have blessed them,” says a Rabat local with vuvuzela in hand.

Many people I spoke to in La Medina, an area of Morocco's capital Rabat, kept mentioning, “Dirou niya” which means, “have faith”.

They seem confident their team will be the first from Africa to reach the semi-finals at a football World Cup.

The Al Bayt Stadium is turning into a bit of a home stadium for England. It will be the third time they’ve played here when they take to the pitch this evening.

They’ll take any advantage they can against the world Champions.

    Morocco v Portugal (15:00 GMT)

    Shamoon Hafez

BBC Sport at Al Thumama Stadium

Morocco have suffered a huge double blow with the news that West Ham centre-back Nayef Aguerd and Bayern Munich full-back Noussair Mazraoui are both out injured.

In come Jawad El Yamiq and Yahya Attiat-Allah into the side.

Morocco XI: Bounou, Hakimi, El Yamiq, Saiss, Attiat-Allah, Ounahi, Amrabat, Amallah, Ziyech, Boufal, En-Nesyri.

    Morocco Squad

The big team news for Portugal is that star man Cristiano Ronaldo is on the bench again, so Goncalo Ramos leads the line again.

There is no place in the starting XI for Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo either.

There is one change from the side that thrashed Switzerland 6-1 in the round of 16, with Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves coming in for William Carvalho.

Portugal XI: Costa, Dalot, Pepe, Dias, Guerreiro, Otavio, Neves, B Silva, Fernandes, Felix, Ramos.

  13. England a 'really powerful team'

    England v France (19:00 GMT)

    Jurgen Klinsmann

Former Germany head coach on BBC Radio 5 Live

Kylian Mbappe is probably the best player in world but England are so strong and balanced.

They have moulded into a really powerful team.

Take the confidence from the semi-final in 2018 and the final of Euro 2020 with you and go into the final stage of this World Cup.

  14. England don't have weaknesses - Deschamps

    England v France (19:00 GMT)

France coach Didier Deschamps talks to the media

France boss Didier Deschamps is certainly convinced England have what it takes at this World Cup.

In three out of four games so far, they have impressed with free-flowing, attacking football and are the joint top scorers with Portugal (12).

They have also shared the goals around with eight different players scoring - with three clean sheets too.

Asked what England's weaknesses are, France head coach Deschamps replied: "They don't have any.

"All teams have strengths, not all have many weaknesses, but slightly less strong points. At the end of the day, you need to identify areas where you think you can attack them.

"It's not by chance they are facing us in the quarter-finals."

  15. What should England do if they go in front?

    England v France (19:00 GMT)

    Rob Green

Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

it would be a huge step for England.

You look at the Croatia semi-final in 2018 and the Italy final of the Euros. When England went in front, they didn't freeze but they did revert to type.

If we go ahead against France, what do we do?

  17. Frozen football

Officials clear Ewood Park of snow

It seems a bit surreal to be building up to a World Cup quarter-final when it's snowing in the UK.

This was the scene outside Ewood Park where Blackburn are currently trailing Preston North End in the Championship.

There have though been a swathe of postponements across the football pyramid.

Check out our scores and fixtures page to see if your team is affected.

  18. 'England will win'

    England v France (19:00 GMT)

    Julien Laurens

French football expert on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think the winner of this game wins the World Cup.

Think about the momentum England will have if they beat the World Cup holders or France will have if they beat the team that made the World Cup semi-finals and Euros final in the last few years.

But I’ve got a bad feeling about it.

I think England will win, I think you have everything.
