England's fair play record may prove useful going into their quarter-final tie with France. None of Southgate's players have been booked across the four games in the tournament so far, meaning they are less at risk of suspension.

Fifa's rules for the World Cup set out that players will receive a one-match ban if they are shown two separate yellow cards across the group stage, as well as the last 16 and quarter-finals.

Two yellow cards in the same game, of course, will also result in a one match ban, as would a straight red card.

French midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni picked up a booking against Poland, whilst defender Jules Kounde was given a yellow against Denmark. With the threat of potentially missing the semi-finals, could that limit their freedom on Saturday?

Didier Deschamps swatted that aside, saying France "would not play with the handbrake on".

Wow. Almost an instant reply from Portugal.

Bruno Fernandes steadies himself for a cross, he unleahes it across goal and it flies over Yassine Bounou but bounces back off the bar.

Ousmane Dembele is lightning quick for France. He's been playing brilliantly for Barcelona. You've got to be careful not to see them as a one-man team, although Kylian Mbappe is the best player in the world in my opinion.

Olivier Giroud keeps scoring goals. We've taken him for granted over the years since he played in England but he is a handful. But I see so much attacking quality and options for England, it would be silly to overly focus on France.

Kyle Walker has played against Mbappe many times and not struggled. Hopefully we are well-equipped.

My wife has gone off on a girls weekend planned a year ago and left me alone with our two toddlers. They'd much rather watch Peppa Pig than the football, plus KO clashes with bedtime. So come 7pm, I'll be pressing record on the telly, turning the phone off, closing the windows, putting in ear plugs and praying they go down quickly so I'm not left too far behind the rest of the country

  13. Time to beat another Euro nationpublished at 15:09 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2022

    England v France (19:00 GMT)

England have been eliminated from six of their last eight World Cup knockout matches against fellow European nations.

By contrast, France have progressed from eight of their last 10 World Cup knockout matches against European opposition (includes third-place play-off and final).

History is there to be rewritten after all.

    Wayne RooneyImage source, Getty Images

Former England striker Wayne Rooney has previewed England's quarter-final against France in his latest Times column, external.

He says whoever wins will go on to win the tournament.

"Before the tournament started I fancied Argentina but while Lionel Messi has been incredible, as a team they don't quite seem good enough," writes Rooney.

I just think that, physically and as collectives, England and France are better sides.

"It's going to be incredibly close, a tough game for both sides, an occasion where focus and concentration has to be of the highest level in every player.

"It's the kind of match that will be won on small details - a mistake by an individual or a bit of magic from someone or a break of the ball or a set piece."

Despite that proud record though, France have only lost one of their last eight encounters with England (W5, D2).

It's the first time since June 2017, a game Les Bleus won 3-2, Kieran Trippier made his debut and the last time Antoine Griezmann missed a match for Didier Deschamps' side.
