  1. Newcastle draw, wins for Fulham & Palacepublished at 13:18 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2023

Newcastle's six-game winning streak came to an end with a goalless draw against Leeds.

Magpies boss said it has been a "year of real progress" for his side, who finished the year third in the Premier League.

    Some achievement.

And there were wins for Crystal Palace and Fulham with the Eagles convincingly beating Bournemouth and the Cottagers' Joao Palhinha scoring late on to seal the points and keep Southampton rooted to the bottom of the table.

That was a bit of a strange one yesterday, wasn't it?

Putting Marcus Rashford on the naughty step but then bringing him off it at half-time because Manchester United needed a goal and he is, undoubtedly, their man in form and came up with the goods when they needed him.

I'm struggling to see the point but hey, that might just be me.

  3. Rashford saves the daypublished at 13:13 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2023

Marcus Rashford turned from villain to hero as he came off the bench to score the only goal in Manchester United's victory over Wolves.

Rashford was not in the starting line-up as punishment for turning up late to a team meeting because he overslept. Awkward.

Regardless, he was called upon at half-time and proved why he's so crucial to the side by breaking the deadlock in the 76th minute.

Mikel Arteta's not getting carried away, though.

He said the gap at the top of the table "means nothing" if Arsenal slip up.

Surely it does give you a bit of breathing space though, doesn't it Gunners?

The machine that is Mikel Arteta's Arsenal just keep winning.

They beat Brighton 4-2 in New Years Eve's late kick-off with goals from Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Martinelli.

That result moved them seven points clear at the top of the Premier League after Manchester City failed to tighten the gap earlier in the day...

Erling Haaland opened the scoring for City on what was expected to be a routine win.

But a scrappy game turned into a disjointed second-half and Everton's Damarai Gray popped up with a stunning curled effort to put the Toffees level.

A draw and a missed opportunity for Pep Guardiola's side? Time will tell.

Before we dive right into what today will bring, let's have a look back on what happened last year.

    Well, yesterday...

  7. Team news - Romero starts, Martinez on benchpublished at 13:00 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2023

Tottenham Hotspur v Aston Villa (14.00 GMT)

Antonio Conte makes four changes to the Tottenham side which came from two goals down to draw at Brentford on Boxing Day.

Two of the changes are in defence, with Eric Dier - who got fierce criticism for his error leading to Brentford's second goal - and Japhet Tanganga benched while Ben Davies and Cristian Romero come in.

Romero, a World Cup winner with Argentina, plays for the first time since that extraordinary final in Qatar.

Bryan Gil also starts for Spurs today, replacing Dejan Kulusevski who reportedly has a hamstring injury. The fourth change is in goal - Hugo Lloris returns, in place of Fraser Forster.

Spurs XI: Lloris; Romero, Lenglet, Davies; Doherty, Hojbjerg, Bissouma, Perisic; Son, Kane, Gil

Subs: Forster, Skipp, Sanchez, Royal, Dier, Sessegnon, Tanganga, Spence, Sarr.

Emiliano Martinez is also back after his World Cup final heroics - but is only on the Aston Villa bench today.

Unai Emery keeps faith with Robin Olsen in goal, naming an unchanged side from the Villa team which were beaten by Liverpool on 26 December.

Aston Villa XI: Olsen; Young, Konsa, Mings, Digne; McGinn, Kamara, Douglas Luiz, Buendia; Bailey, Watkins.

Subs: Martinez, Cash, Sanson, Ings, Chambers, Augustinsson, Bednarek, Coutinho, Archer.
