Interesting to see if Fernandez can put in a performance that matches his price tag. Too many big money signings come to the Prem and flop.

All that money Chelsea have spent and yet they still haven’t got someone who’s an out an out centre forward who scores regularly. (Felix isn’t that even when available) it’s a bit of a joke really when their entire squad has scored less premier league goals than Haaland on his own.

Graham Potter admitted the memory of defeat by Fulham is "still there" as he prepares for the rematch at Stamford Bridge.

It's three weeks since a chastening defeat for the Blues in a game that saw high-profile new signing Joao Felix sent off on his debut and Fulham secure their first win in 18 years over Chelsea.

"The memory of defeat is still there," said Potter. "It was a low point for us and losing Joao probably summed up the moment we were in.

"It's been about showing strength and togetherness to come through that."

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson says "individuals don't make a team" but accepts Chelsea will be "a serious threat" after their outlay in the transfer market.

Speaking on the Footballer's Football podcast, Wilson recognised Chelsea's ambition and noted boss Graham Potter's ability to bring the best out of a group.

"They've bought lots of players but individuals don't make a team," he said. "They've gone all out so must feel they need players in lots of positions.

"I'm sure they will be stronger for it as you don't spend that money on such young prospects and all of them be flops.

"It takes time to gel so it might not be this season that we see the best of Chelsea but they will be a serious threat.

"And besides, Potter gets teams playing football."

If you want to that is, it sounded a bit passive aggressive there.

  7. Chelsea 'making it up as they go along' - Suttonpublished at 19:06 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2023

    Chelsea v Fulham (20:00 GMT)

Chelsea are "making it up as they go along" according to former striker Chris Sutton.

"It's just amazing," former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast. "You can’t accuse Todd Boehly of not putting his money where his mouth is, but it just seems from the outside they are making it up as they go along.

"The approach seems to be 'any good player about, we will pay whatever and bring him in'. At the World Cup, Fernandez was really influential but didn’t start Argentina's first couple of games.

"He came in and improved their midfield, but if we are talking 120m (euros), they are only buying potential. He is still a young man, he is miles off the finished article - even if it might sound strange saying that after he’s already won a World Cup.

"Benfica only bought him for £12m in the summer so it's incredible Chelsea are going to pay that amount of money. But January is a crazy month and it looks like Benfica are going to get what they asked for, which is miles over what Chelsea should be paying."
