Coventry City 0-0 West Bromwich Albion

If Coventry could shoot on target, they might be ahead by now.

Another Viktor Gyokeres piledriver fizzes just wide of the right upright.

Instead it's Cov who survive when Callum Doyle clears off the line from Tom Rogic, after he pounced on an error.

Coventry City 0-0 West Bromwich Albion

Albion have made a quiet start but at least their 4,500 strong army of away fans are in good voice.

They sold out their original allocation and had to ask for 500 more.

They call it a "star" save, Peter Schmeichel made it famous, where you make your body as big as possible.

Coventry have definitely started the better of the two sides.

Coventry City 0-0 West Bromwich Albion

Another dodgy moment for the Albion defence as they deal with the aerial threat of Viktor Gyokeres.

But keeper Alex Palmer just about deals with it followed by a big hoof clear from Okay Yokuslu.

And Cov then go close again from an inswinging free-kick. Good start from the Sky Blues.

Early chance for Coventry as Callum O'Hare latches onto a Viktor Gyokeres cut back from the left but he has too much fade on his right-foot shot and it goes wide, as does a powerful effort from Ben Sheaf from slightly further out, which goes slightly further wide.

  6. Cov get first cornerpublished at 19:50 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2022

Coventry City 0-0 West Bromwich Albion

Coventry win the first corner but Albion, playing in their red-shirted and navy blue away strip, survive.

No more than a hopeful 'ooh' from the home fans as the danger is averted at the near post.

  7. KICK-OFFpublished at 19:46 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2022

Coventry City 0-0 West Bromwich Albion

Referee Keith Stroud gets us under way on a cold night at the CBS Arena.

Cold, but not as cold as sub-zero Sunderland, where Albion won in the freezing Wearside fog, on the coldest day in the UK since 2010 in their last away game.

Let's see if this one warms up...

Coventry City v West Bromwich Albion (19:45 GMT)

Coventry are unchanged tonight following Saturday's alarming surrender of a three-goal lead at home to Swansea.

    Albion make one change though.

Brandon Thomas-Asante comes back in up front in place of Daryl Dike.

Dike was Albion's late matchwinner at Sunderland nine days ago but substituted after less than an hour with Albion in control against Rotherham on Saturday as Carlos Corberan continues to nurse the big striker back after his long lay-off.

    Tony Brown
West Brom's all-time record goalscorer on BBC Radio WM

When you're winning matches, you can't get out on to the pitch quick enough, the fans are behind you and there's no negativity around.

This transformation under the new manager has been superb. There seems to be a terrific atmosphere around the place.

The hard part now is keeping this run going.

West Bromwich Albion have been upwardly mobile since Carlos Corberan succeeded Steve Bruce as Baggies boss in October.

And his colourful fast-moving post-match press conferences make him a real overseas sports personality. But his words have had a positive effect where it counts most, in the dressing room.

Five consecutive wins have lifted spirits around The Hawthorns and got Albion fans looking up the Championship table rather than down.

Nine days ago, before they kicked off against Sunderland, Albion were 22nd in the standings.

Although they start the night in 16th, two places behind the Sky Blues in this crazily congested division, they'll go up to eighth if they win tonight.

It's amazing how quickly things can turn around in the Championship.

  12. Postpublished at 19:35 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2022

Coventry City v West Bromwich Albion (19:45 GMT)

In any year over the past two decades since they left the Premier League, Coventry City have experienced their own private contest of sports 'personalities', often causing them more pain than pleasure. And their long-suffering fans deserve any 'Unsung Hero' award.

Their so far 17-year-long battle to make this stadium their home is still far from over - and they have again had plenty to contend with off the field in recent weeks. But at least the uncertainty of where they'll be playing their home games for the rest of the season has been removed now that a deal to remain at the CBS Arena for the rest of the campaign has been agreed.

On the pitch, after the upset of their pitch-affected start to the season, the Sky Blues were in great form before the World Cup break, winning four successive Championship games, but they have not won since their return and let a three-goal lead slip at home against Swansea on Saturday.

  13. Remembering Terry Hallpublished at 19:32 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2022

Coventry City v West Bromwich Albion (19:45 GMT)

The city of Coventry lost one of its own earlier this week when Terry Hall, front man of The Specials, died on Monday aged 63.

The Sky Blues are paying tribute to Hall - who had a trial with West Bromwich Albion as a youngster - at this evening's match by playing several songs by The Specials before kick-off and during the half-time interval.

Sky Blues fan John Dawkins, who manages musical acts such as Tom Grennan, was one of many supporters who asked if Coventry may be able to wear their 2-Tone kit in tribute to Hall.

The club said this would not be possible, but encouraged supporters to wear theirs at the CBS Arena this evening.

"I tweeted about wearing the 2-Tone kit, which obviously can't happen because it's an old kit," Dawkins told BBC CWR. "The only blemish on Terry's career was that he was a Manchester United fan!

"But he's one of our own, Terry, and he should be celebrated on Wednesday at the game."

It's the final Championship night before Christmas.

It's also a night tinged with sadness in Coventry as the locals meet up for the first time since Monday night when the death of Coventry music legend Terry Hall was announced. Fans have been encouraged to wear their 2-Tone outfits in his honour.

Meanwhile, 100 miles to the north in Manchester, it's also BBC Sports Personality of the Year night.

But the only place to be for Coventry City and West Bromwich Albion fans is here at the Coventry Building Society Arena, where the prize on offer for tonight's winners is eighth place - within two points of the play-off positions.
