    FT: Hibernian 0-3 Hearts

Hearts have put together a terrific squad and in Shankland they have an exceptional player. Kye Rowles has been an outstanding signing. Look across the city and there's the soap opera around Ryan Porteous - where is he going? Meanwhile, Rowles has locked down a five-year deal.

One club is in a state of flux and the other is in calm waters.

  4. 'Hearts had to win the battle'published at 16:49 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2023

    FT: Hibernian 0-3 Hearts

"We had to win the battle," Hearts veteran Robert Snodgrass tells BBC Sportsound.

"We had to dig deep at times, it was tough to get a foothold. Hibs had a lot of possession but didn't do much with it.

"With this group of lads, I'm enjoying it. I'm just using my experience to help them.

"Hearts are a massive club, there's no question about it. The next step is breaking into the top two. How do we get there?"

  5. Johnson vows to 'stick it out'published at 16:46 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2023

    FT: Hibernian 0-3 Hearts

Hibernian head coach Lee Johnson tells Sportsound: "Very tough. Obviously, we're disappointed. The boys have worked their socks off and we've come out conceded three and not scored.

"Large portions of the game we controlled and we had good efforts on goal. In the end, they've been more clinical in the final third and defensively more stout than us. Both boxes was the key today.

"First goal is a tough one. He's clever, he pulls away and it's a great finish. The second goal's a poor one to concede. The third one is disappointing but we're throwing men forward trying to get the game back.

"It's my job to keep believing in these lads. We've got to finish third, fourth in the league. That starting XI has got enough international caps, has got enough quality as you saw in the game but we've got to do more in terms of killing opposition and scoring the first goal.

"We're not hiding from the fact that there's a lot to do at this football club. There's got to be improvement. I enjoy my job and I'm here fighting every day to try and lift everyone. Of course, there's going to be question marks on myself. I know the challenges and the hurdles we've faced. I'm going to continue and stick it out.

"I don't know (about Rocky Bushiri's injury). He was on the oxygen. Just praying it's not a leg break."

  9. Neilson challenges Shankland to hit 30 goalspublished at 16:33 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2023

    FT: Hibernian 0-3 Hearts

Hearts manager Robbie Neilson tells Sportsound: "The 3-0 probably flattered us. It's quite scrappy, it's hard to get control. Ultimately, we got the goals at the right time and we've managed to progress into the next round.

"You have to sometimes ride your luck. I thought we did enough to win the game. The level of the team is actually going up as we bring subs on, which is what we need to do.

"Josh Ginnelly's contract's up so it's something we're going to speak about. We'll definitely have a chat with Josh and get things tied up if we can. You're starting to see a real top player come through.

"Lawrence Shankland's been outstanding, absolutely outstanding. The first person that texted me today after the game was John Robertson to ask for Lawrence's number to give him a wee call. I knew bringing Lawrence in here he would score goals because we create chances. Can he get to 30?

"Toby Sibbick is a great boy. Over the last month, he's really, really kicked on and he's got that sharpness about him that he needs."

  10. 'Hibs not strong enough in middle of the park'published at 16:31 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2023

    FT: Hibernian 0-3 Hearts

    Tom English
BBC Scotland's chief sports writer on Sportsound

Today was a sickener for Hibs because they played well and still lose 3-0.

Hearts are coming off and saying 'we can do a lot better than that', Hibs are saying 'actually that was a good performance'. That's deeply concerning.

Defensively, Hibs are just not good enough. It's the same in the middle of the park, where there's no buffer in front of that defence.

    FT: Hibernian 0-3 Hearts

    Neil McCann
Former Rangers winger on BBC Sportsound

Hearts keep saying they are not at their best but they've just smashed eight past Aberdeen and Hibs. That's not bad. There's something really good happening in that dressing room.

  12. 'Managers need time'published at 16:25 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2023

    FT: Hibernian 0-3 Hearts

    John Collins
Former Hibs manager on BBC Sportsound

You can't run a club by what supporters say. If your team is playing well and losing games, you don't just sack the manager. It's too easy to pull the trigger. Managers need time and a lot of the summer signings weren't good enough.

But there is shape, there is discipline. Are the players working their socks off? Yes. Are they getting into good positions? Yes. Are they delivering goals in key moments in the big games? No.

  14. 'Hearts were better in the two boxes'published at 16:18 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2023

    FT: Hibernian 0-3 Hearts

    Neil McCann
Former Hearts winger on BBC Sportsound

It's a tough one for Lee Johnson. The only thing that was missing today was hitting the back of the net. I thought they were really good. They were pushing to get a goal and they were done by Sibbick.

The second goal - Shankland has no right to score it. Hibs had seven or eight jerseys around him. He's picked it up wide. That'll annoy Johnson.

Sometimes you sit there and think 'we're missing a vital component right now'. Nisbet didn't have many if any chances all game. Youan looked the busiest and McGeady faded.

Sibbick summed it up perfectly. You win football games in the the two boxes. Hearts were better in the two boxes.

  15. Sibbick hails Hearts' chemistrypublished at 16:15 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2023

    FT: Hibernian 0-3 Hearts

Toby Sibbick has just about got his breath back after that great run for Hearts' third goal.

"The chemistry in the team is good and we just want to keep the run going," he tells BBC Scotland. "We were solid as a team, good in both boxes, and took our chances when they came. To come here and win 3-0 is a great result for the club and our supporters.

"We believe in each other and we want to keep pushing each other."

Former Hibs manager on BBC Sportsound

Lee Johnson is going to be bitterly disappointed with the result. There's lots of aspects during the 90 minutes that he'll not be disappointed with. Of course there's going to be pressure heaped on him.

Overall, his team's worked hard from start to finish, they've worked their way up to the opposition's box on numerous occasions, got into good positions but they haven't finished things off.

Hearts absorbed a lot of pressure, they were solid at the back and did a good job of snuffing out Kevin Nisbet.

Six shots on target, three goals, that's an impressive strike rate.

The only black mark is the red card for Lawrence Shankland.

Hibs' woes increase as Rocky Bushiri appears to be in real pain near the touchline.

If Ryan Porteous is to leave, then Hibs can't afford to lose another central defender.

The big Belgian is being placed on a stretcher as Paul Hanlon comes off the bench, along with Ewan Henderson.
