    Shrewsbury 0-0 Forest Green

Aside from going viral after being presented with a vegan burger in an interview and flapping over how much he recycles, the big talking point this week in League One is around what Duncan Ferguson can do at Forest Green.

The twice-Everton caretaker boss takes to the dugout for the first time as a manager outright and the new man at the New Lawn has a huge task on his hands. They’re bottom of the league and conceded more than 50 goals - and the way they softly fell to a 2-1 defeat at home to relegation rivals MK Dons last Saturday would have rung alarm bells. That was followed by defeat at Bolton, despite a one-man advantage for over an hour.

It couldn’t be a worse opponent for Rovers either. Shrewsbury Town have been on fire, winning three in a row and scoring 10 in the process.

Luke Leahy has scored six penalties, and eight in total this season, and he’s been feeding Bournemouth loanee Christian Saydee to great effect.

  2. Squad Goals Championship game of the daypublished at 15:02 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2023

    Middlesbrough 0-0 Watford

    Michael Redford

For the neutral there’s a clear game of the day as sixth-placed Middlesbrough take on third-placed Watford.

With the automatic promotion spots seemingly done and dusted - even though it’s only January - eyes now turn to the play-off spots, with both of these teams expecting to be involved.

Michael Carrick has breathed new life into the Riverside, winning eight of his first 11 league games in charge.

A heavy FA Cup loss and defeat at local neighbours Sunderland means the honeymoon period might be over though and it’ll be interesting to see how his side react today against a Watford side that win football matches, just not consistently.

Only TWICE have they won back-to-back league games this season - once earlier this month and the other time back in October...

Defeat today and Watford will be looking over their shoulders at the chasing pack - rather than looking up at the top two.

  4. Can the O's pull clear?published at 14:58 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2023

Tranmere v Leyton Orient (15:00 GMT)

With Stevenage tied up in FA Cup action this weekend, League Two leaders Orient have a chance to put some daylight between them and their closest challengers.

A win at Tranmere would take the O's five points clear at the top, albeit having played two games more than their rivals, but they'll have to find their shooting boots first of all.

Richie Wellens' side have found the net just once in their last six league games and dropped 12 points in that sequence.

They could have their work cut out against a Tranmere defence which has conceded just 23 goals in 26 league games this term.

  7. A different ball game for new bosspublished at 14:52 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2023

Shrewsbury v Forest Green (15:00 GMT)

Duncan Ferguson only arrived at Forest Green on Thursday, but he'll want to see a full-blooded and committed display from his new charges, much in the mould of the big man himself.

This will be the first go at full-time management for the former Everton assistant boss, but he can lean on two spells as caretaker boss with the Toffees.

He took charge for just one game in his latest spell 12 months ago, following the departure of Rafa Benitez - a 1-0 home defeat by Aston Villa.

Forest Green are four points from safety and have won just five of their 28 league matches this season.

Can they claim a first victory since 10 December? Ninth-placed Shrewsbury will have plenty to say about that.

  8. A new role for Big Duncpublished at 14:50 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2023

Shrewsbury v Forest Green (15:00 GMT)

One of the most highly anticipated EFL fixtures today comes at Montgomery Waters Meadow, where Duncan Ferguson makes his bow as the new Forest Green gaffer.

Rovers are bottom of the pile in League One, having taken just one point from the last seven games, a run which signalled the end for head coach Ian Burchnall.

Bolstered by nine new faces in January, including four arrivals this week, can Big Dunc improve Rovers' fortunes?

    Coventry v Huddersfield (15:00 GMT)

More off-field news to report from Coventry City, with Doug King becoming sole owner of the Championship club after purchasing the remaining 15% of shares held by previous owner Sisu.

On the field, results have not been the best recently - the Sky Blues are six games without a win in all competitions, with an FA Cup loss to National League side Wrexham included in that run.

Huddersfield picked up a couple of important wins towards the end of 2022 but have so far failed to win in the new year and start today still in the bottom three.

Mark Fotheringham's team do have two games in hand on many of the teams above them, though, and victory today will see them move out of the relegation zone.

    Hull v QPR (15:00 GMT)

After a very slow start to the campaign, Hull have pulled eight points clear of the Championship relegation zone.

They have certainly been much harder to beat in recent weeks, losing only two league games since Liam Rosenior took charge in early November.

In contrast, QPR began the season in fine style but their potential promotion challenge has lost more and more momentum by the week.

Rangers have won only once since 22 October but, sitting only four points from the play-off places, there is still time for them to force their way back into the mix.

    Middlesbrough v Watford (15:00 GMT)

Changing managers seems to have had the desired effect for Middlesbrough and Watford, with Michael Carrick and Slaven Bilic guiding their respective sides into the Championship play-off places at start of play today.

Boro have won seven of their past nine league games, but are sure to be still smarting from last weekend's derby loss to Sunderland.

Watford, meanwhile, are unbeaten in three league games and the closest challengers to Burnley and Sheffield United - albeit a massive 13 points behind the second-placed Blades.

Watford won the reverse fixture 2-1 with a stoppage-time winner in August.

  14. Bolton beat Charlton to close gap to top fourpublished at 14:40 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2023

There was early action in League One as well today and with the top four all out of action, fifth-placed Bolton closed the gap with victory in the lunchtime kick-off at Charlton.

Aaron Morley's free-kick gave the Trotters an early lead before Albie Morgan drew the Addicks level just after the break.

But Wanderers top scorer Dion Charles stroked in his 14th goal of the season - after having his suspension lifted - to give his side back-to-back league wins for the first time since October.

It moved Bolton level on points with fourth-placed Derby - who have played two games fewer - and within eight points of the automatic promotion places.

As mentioned earlier, there's plenty of EFL interest in the FA Cup fourth round today.

In Saturday's early kick-offs, League Two side Walsall gave Leicester a severe test but lost 1-0 to a second-half goal by Kelechi Iheanacho, while Leeds' progression past League One club Accrington was much more straightforward.

There are only three Championship matches today but there's interest at the top and the bottom of the second tier, with third-placed Watford going to fellow promotion contenders Middlesbrough in the pick of the games.

There's lots going on in League One and League Two, including the full-time managerial debut of Everton legend Duncan Ferguson, who will take charge of Forest Green Rovers for the first time away at Shrewsbury, and a belated first game as Crawley boss for Scott Lindsey.
