  • 10 games in Championship on Saturday

  1. GREAT SAVE!published at 48 mins

    West Brom 1-0 Coventry

Well, a save at least. City keeper Ben Wilson is a little hesitant as he races out of his goal to close down Daryl Dike and slows up to allow the striker to get off an angled shot from a bouncing ball, only to block it as he star-fished his body in the old Peter Schmeichel style.

The 17th shot but only the third on target tonight.

  2. SECOND HALFpublished at 46 mins

    West Brom 1-0 Coventry

Got your breath back? We're under way for the second 45 minutes... No changes at the break.

  3. All light on the night?published at 20:55 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2023

    HT: West Brom 1-0 Coventry

You might have caught a glimpse just before the goal but Baggies protest group Action For Albion are continuing their campaign against the club's majority shareholder Guochuan Lai tonight.

The mobile phone lights you might have seen from supporters in the stands are part of the 'lights up for Lai out' campaign, aiming to pressure Lai into returning a debt to the club which was promised to aid the club's transfer budget during the transfer window.

The fans will be lighting up for a second time just before the hour mark too... but will it produce a similar reaction from the players?

  4. 'Game lost its edge'published at 20:50 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2023

    HT: West Brom 1-0 Coventry

Hard to moan after such a breathless start to a derby in what was such a pulsating atmosphere.

But this game rather lost its edge in the period leading up to the break.

Maybe both sets were all 'shouted out' and resting their larynxes, prior to some half-time liquid refreshment.

Albion still looking the far more likely side to win this though.

  5. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:50 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2023

    West Brom 1-0 Coventry

Well, that was a pretty good advert for the Championship, wasn't it!?

Grady Diangana's fourth goal of the season from close range separates the sides at the interval but a 4-2 scoreline wouldn't be an outrageous reflection of the first half.

  6. TWO ADDED MINUTESpublished at 45 mins

    West Brom 1-0 Coventry

West Brom are well worth their lead and they seem content to settle for 1-0 at half-time. There's been a little less urgency in the final 15 minutes of the first half.

You can only imagine that Carlos Corberan will want more of the same in the second period, as for Mark Robins, a penny for his thoughts...

  7. Postpublished at 38 mins

    West Brom 1-0 Coventry

Coventry's Kasey Palmer had a volley blocked behind a few minutes ago and is clearly keen to make up for it.

Jake Bidwell allows him to take a free-kick from the left flank with his right-foot but his attempted shot, from around 35 yards and an acute angle, flies well over David Button's bar to howls of derision from Albion fans.

  8. Postpublished at 36 mins

    West Brom 1-0 Coventry

It was only a couple of minutes pause, and Yokuslu is fine to continue, but it's definitely had an impact on the pace of the game since the resumption.

  9. Postpublished at 32 mins

    West Brom 1-0 Coventry

Finally a chance to catch a breath. Some treatment is needed for Baggies midfielder Okay Yokuslu. Take your time Okay, no rush.

  10. CLOSE!published at 29 mins

    West Brom 1-0 Coventry

It's Jed Wallace again, this time he wins the ball in the City half on the left, cuts inside and tries to flash one into the bottom corner from an angle, just missing the far post with Ben Wilson at full-stretch.

West Brom have looked dangerous every time they go forward, though Coventry have had a few half-chances on the break too.

    Good watch, this!

  11. Postpublished at 25 mins

    West Brom 1-0 Coventry

At this rate Marc Albrighton and Jed Wallace are going to need their own reality show.

The pair have already developed an incredible understanding down Albion's right flank, first the debutant lays-off for Wallace to sweep in a shot which is blocked behind, then from the corner Albrighton picks out Wallace who can can't keep his effort on target.

West Brom have had 10 shots already. It's wave after wave of attacks.

  12. 'A matter of time before the dam burst'published at 20:23 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2023

West Bromwich Albion 1-0 Coventry City

    Ged Scott
    BBC Sport at The Hawthorns

That was almost seamless the way the Albion fans staged that.

No sooner had they lit up their phones for a planned protest against West Brom owner Guochuan Lai than it had an illuminating, electrifying effect on the pitch too.

It was starting to look as if it might be only a matter of time before the dam burst - and finally it did.

A tad ironic that the goal actually came from a long throw, not a cross - but Jed Wallace's move inside to accommodate new man Marc Albrighton on the wing looks inspired. He's still been involved in almost everything - and he led the shared celebrations with one half of the partitioned Smethwick End.

One the other side of that partition, the Sky Blues fans have been silenced - and look stunned.

  13. Postpublished at 21 mins

    West Brom 1-0 Coventry

'We're on our way, to the Premier League...' sing the home faithful. Burnley and Sheffield United might have a little something to say about that, but to Carlos Corberan's credit the Baggies are seeking a sixth win and clean sheet in a row at The Hawthorns, something they haven't achieved since December 1977.

  14. goal

GOAL: West Brom 1-0 Coventrypublished at 15 mins

    Grady Diangana

It's been end-to-end stuff but West Brom have had the better of it so far and they have a lead to show for it.

Grady Diangana is on hand at the far post to sweep home after Jed Wallace flicks on a missile of a long throw from Darnell Furlong.

Diangana and Wallace had both seen attempts blocked in an almighty melee in the Coventry penalty area shortly before the breakthrough.

An absolutely barnstorming start to this one.

  15. Postpublished at 8 mins

    West Brom 0-0 Coventry

End to end stuff at The Hawthorns. This time a Marc Albrighton cross is cut-out, only for Jed Wallace to collect the loose ball and flash a rising shot past the angle of post and bar.

    Breathless start.

  16. CLOSE!published at 7 mins

    West Brom 0-0 Coventry

It's the man you'd want to be on the end of it too! Viktor Gyokeres darts into the near post to meet a low cross from the right from Jamie Allen but his slight deflection flies across the face of goal and agonisingly past the far post from a Sky Blues perspective.

A slick approach from the visitors, that.

  17. CLOSE!published at 4 mins

    West Brom 0-0 Coventry

Daryl Dike spurns a glorious chance to put the hosts ahead inside five minutes.

A teasing cross from debutant Marc Albrighton is deflected back across goal by a defender but Dike can only steer his header over Wilson's crossbar.

  18. Postpublished at 3 mins

    West Brom 0-0 Coventry

Nervy start for Coventry keeper Ben Wilson who slices a clearance into the stands to the delight of the home faithful before racing off his line to try and claim an up-and-under into his area, only to fumble the ball and put his defence under pressure.

  19. KICK-OFFpublished at 20:02 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2023

    West Brom 0-0 Coventry

Referee Gavin Ward gets us underway at The Hawthorns... on a chilly night like this let's hope this is a full-blooded Midlands derby to warm us up.

  20. A legend of the gamepublished at 19:59 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2023

West Bromwich Albion v Coventry City (20:00 GMT)

Tonight's game is a perfect opportunity to celebrate the life and legacy of Cyrille Regis, who made more than 500 appearances for these two clubs.

He died at the age of 59 in 2018.

It is also Albion’s annual Kick it Out game, with players wearing the anti-discrimination campaign group’s shirts during their warm-up.

Baggies fans attending the game were invited to wear this season's yellow-and-green away kit, which is dedicated to the Cyrille Regis Legacy Trust and features some of the striker's favourite quotes.
