That's as far as we go here tonight as hectic midweek round of matches across the EFL comes to a close.

Elsewhere, the bottom two Huddersfield and Blackpool both lost after having a man sent off. You can catch the reports from all of tonight's six games by clicking here.

We'll be back with more EFL live text action on Friday when struggling Cardiff will look to build on their win over Birmingham on Tuesday when they host Reading.

Third-placed Middlesbrough HAD to win at Sheffield United tonight to give themselves any chance of being in contention for the top two.

Win they did, thanks to a double from Aston Villa loanee Cameron Archer.

They're still seven points behind the Blades, having played a game more but Paul Heckingbottom's men will be left in no doubt that Boro's challenge is serious.

Fourth-placed Luton could only draw at 10-man Preston and a draw between West Brom and Blackburn did little to further either sides' top six hopes.

Cardiff are the main winners, moving two points clear of the drop zone after ending their 12-match winless run at Birmingham last night.

Wigan remain within touching distance thanks to their 1-1 draw at Bristol City, which extends Shaun Maloney's unbeaten start to three games.

But Huddersfield and Blackpool suffered defeat again, with the Terriers losing a bit of a six-pointer at Stoke.

However, Neil Warnock will return as Huddersfield boss for the weekend, and will no doubt have a say in the relegation scrap before the end of the season.

It was a hard fought game. Albion will be very disappointed because they worked their socks off to get in front and then they conceded a poor equaliser.

Middlesbrough have been absolutely outstanding. When that early goal went in your thought it was going to be tough because Sheffield United were on the front foot.

But Middlesbrough got back into the game and were the better side. This is a huge result and it sends a message out to Sheffield United and the teams around us.

They have performed tonight at their very best, they have gone to a place where the home side expects to win and they have turned them over.

Chuba Akpom levelled for the away side with his 17th of the season before the break and they took that momentum into the second half.

Aston Villa loanee Cameron Archer scored with two fine strikes to give Boro all three points.

Michael Carrick's men are still seven points behind the Blades having played a game more but... they've given themselves a chance now.

The Terriers fell behind early on through a goal from 40-year-old defender Phil Jagielka.

Will Boyle was sent off for the Terriers after the break before goals from Jacob Brown and Lewis Baker made the points safe.
