  5. Maguire magic?published at 20:46 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2023

HT: Raith Rovers 0-0 Ayr United

Might former Scotland international Chris Maguire be the difference for Ayr in the second half? He could make his debut tonight, and he spoke to BBC Scotland ahead of kick-off:

"I just want to get back and play football. I know the manager really well, so it's a good fit.

"I've been ticking over, but nothing beats getting on the pitch. In a couple of weeks, I'll be fully at it."

Goals win games, and as it stands, Ayr United are staring down the barrel at three league games without a goal.

    It's awfy open, isn't it?

Former Rangers defender on BBC Sportscene

There's been very little quality at the top end for both sides, and that's why we're goalless.

  8. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:36 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2023

    Raith Rovers 0-0 Ayr United

No goals as of yet in Kirkcaldy, but both sides will feel they could, perhaps should, have had a penalty.

A looping ball into the Ayr box struck Nick McAllister on the arm, and then Scott Brown leaned into Dipo Akinyemi's goal-bound shot.

Colin Steven wasn't convinced on either occasion though.

  9. Great block!published at 45 mins

    Raith Rovers 0-0 Ayr United

Ayr come forward and have the hosts pinned in their own box, but just when Ben Dempsey looks to have a clear sight of goal, Ross Millen and Ryan Nolan fly across to block his shot behind for a corner.

Make sure it's in the quadrant please, Mr Mullin - wouldn't want to upset your man in the crowd.

    Fantastic pedantry from the stands.

Josh Mullin prepares to take a corner for Ayr, and is loudly told to "get the ball in the quadrant".

That's something that really annoys my dad; can't say I've ever been too fussed to be honest.

  11. YELLOW CARDpublished at 39 mins

    Raith Rovers 0-0 Ayr United

This is a hilariously cynical challenge from Sam Stanton.

Daire O'Connor knocks the ball into acres of space, before Stanton takes him out to halt the United attack.

    A tactical yellow.

  12. YELLOW CARDpublished at 37 mins

    Raith Rovers 0-0 Ayr United

Reece McAlear clips Dylan Easton's heels after the Raith man gets goal-side, and is duly booked.

Needs to be careful now, the young midfielder.

This has been a proper end-to-end game, there really isn't a lot between the sides.

You can feel the angst, though, from the home fans that they haven't buried an opportunity yet - particularly in the early passages when they were really on top.

  14. Postpublished at 35 mins

    Raith Rovers 0-0 Ayr United

Dylan Easton whips a shot high and wide.

You sense a goal isn't far away. Fingers crossed!

  15. Postpublished at 32 mins

    Raith Rovers 0-0 Ayr United

Having seen that handball appeal again, it is a very good shout for a penalty.

Colin Steven can't have seen that, because Scott Brown definitely moves his arm into the ball. Maybe more shoulder than arm - who knows what the handball rule is this week?

  16. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 31 mins

    Raith Rovers 0-0 Ayr United

Ayr appeal for handball after Dipo Akinyemi's goalbound shot was blocked, but Colin Steven waves play-on.

The referee then gets flattened as United try to recover possession.

I'm fairly sure it was accidental...

  17. Chance!published at 29 mins

    Raith Rovers 0-0 Ayr United

A superb, marauding run from Alex Kirk takes him away from three opposition players, and he picks out Mark McKenzie, who is once again free in the box.

However, he's just stretching and his header goes harmlessly over the bar.

Ayr are growing into this game.

  18. Postpublished at 27 mins

    Raith Rovers 0-0 Ayr United

Josh Mullin's delivery is always on the money - he's put a few delightful crosses in from the right-hand side.

This one lands on the head of Mark McKenzie, but he can't trouble Jamie MacDonald in the Raith goal.

  19. Postpublished at 24 mins

    Raith Rovers 0-0 Ayr United

A brief stoppage allows Lee Bullen to dish out some instructions.

Nick McAllister needs a wee bit of treatment, but should be fine to continue.

  20. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 18 mins

    Raith Rovers 0-0 Ayr United

Oooh, big shouts for handball from Raith fans and players alike, but Colin Steven says no...

A ball drops out of the sky and definitely lands on Nick McAllister's arm, but I'm not sure how much the Ayr man knew about it.

You fancy VAR would give that if it was in play.
