Under way then at the Riverside, where it's a case of bowlers and pinstripes all round for the Preston North End travelling support as part of their annual 'Gentry Day'.

It's the Lilywhites fans' way of paying tribute to those fans who have sadly passed away over the past 12 months, with flags representing those also on display.

Former boss Alan Ball Senior coined the phrase during his time in charge which was borrowed by the fans, when he described the support as 'the best, the gentry'. They will be doing that tradition proud today, no doubt.

Lincoln's proud 11-month unbeaten home record is over!

Play-off chasing Peterborough have become the first away team to win at Sincil Bank since Wigan on 9 April last year.

Jonson Clarke-Harris gave Posh a half-time lead before goals from Jack Taylor and Joe Ward sealed a 3-0 win that moves Peterborough within four points of the League One play-offs in seventh.

Burnley are now the only EFL team left unbeaten at home this season.

All games kick off at 15:00 GMT

Game of the day in League Two is a meeting of two automatic promotion contenders as third-placed Carlisle host Stevenage, in second.

United will go above Boro if they can claim a fifth straight league win.

The game could play into the hands of leaders Orient, who will extend their six-point cushion if they beat Colchester and Stevenage slip up.

Also waiting to pounce are Northampton, who are just a point and a place outside the top three. They will be chasing a fourth win in their last six at home to Crewe.

In the race for the play-offs fifth-placed Stockport entertain Nigel Clough's Mansfield, who are well-placed one point outside the top seven.

At the bottom, Rochdale are six points from safety and have 10 games left to get themselves out of the soup, starting with a home match with mid-table Swindon.

Second-bottom Crawley ended their eight-match winless run in style against fellow strugglers Harrogate last weekend, and this afternoon head to AFC Wimbledon.

    • AFC Wimbledon v Crawley Town
    • Carlisle United v Stevenage
    • Harrogate Town v Barrow
    • Leyton Orient v Colchester United
    • Northampton Town v Crewe Alexandra
    • Rochdale v Swindon Town
    • Salford City v Doncaster Rovers

After leaders Sheffield Wednesday were held to a draw by Bolton last night, Plymouth can cut the gap to a single point if they beat rock-bottom Forest Green, although they will have played two games more than the Owls.

Rovers desperately need points for contrasting reasons - they’re 12 from safety with 10 games left, still searching for their first win since Duncan Ferguson took charge in late January.

In-form Ipswich are just two points behind Argyle in third and will hope to keep pace with a sixth straight win. They host Shrewsbury, who need points to keep their play-off aspirations alive.

Eight wins in a 10-match unbeaten run have brought fourth-placed Barnsley within eight points of the automatic promotion spots, with two games in hand. They visit Wycombe, who sit a place outside the play-off places.

Derby, in fifth, host Fleetwood looking to further strengthen their play-off credentials.

At the bottom, Morecambe, in 22nd, host 19th-placed Oxford, who are looking for an upturn under new boss Liam Manning.

And another relegation six-pointer sees Accrington, hovering just above the drop zone, entertain MK Dons who are a place and two points from safety.

    • Accrington Stanley v Milton Keynes Dons
    • Bristol Rovers v Portsmouth
    • Cambridge United v Charlton Athletic
    • Cheltenham Town v Exeter City
    • Derby County v Fleetwood Town
    • Ipswich Town v Shrewsbury Town
    • Morecambe v Oxford United
    • Plymouth Argyle v Forest Green Rovers
    • Port Vale v Burton Albion
    • Wycombe Wanderers v Barnsley

The EFL weekend kicked off last night with League One leaders Sheffield Wednesday's home game against play-off hopefuls Bolton.

The Owls took the lead through Lee Gregory before Victor Adeboyejo levelled for the Trotters.

Neither team could find a winner but the point extended Wednesday's club record unbeaten run to 23 league matches and their lead at the top to four points.

Bolton are winless in four but will end the weekend in the play-off spots regardless of results in the third tier today.

Blackpool recorded their first win in five with the humbling of QPR on Tuesday and will be seeking to close the four-point gap to safety as they host Coventry.

The Sky Blues are unbeaten in eight and only six points outside the play-off places, but, get this, they have never beaten a Mick McCarthy side - he’s won his last five against them.

Basement-boys Wigan face a testing trip to Chris Wilder’s Watford. The Latics are effectively seven points from safety, given their inferior goal difference, are winless in seven league games and without a victory in 13 on the road.

The Hornets are just six points adrift of the play-off places after Wilder’s first win, against Birmingham on Tuesday.

Norwich will be seeking to close the four-point gap to the top-six as they head to in-form Stoke, who drew at Middlesbrough in midweek.

Keep your eye on this one... the Canaries have scored 12 goals in the last four meetings between the sides, while the Potters have notched six themselves.

Reading host Hull in one of the division's rare games with no huge implications in the race at either end of the table.

The Royals, in 16th, have lost four in a row while the Tigers have registered one win in seven and sit one place and two points ahead of their hosts.

    Rotherham v Cardiff (15:00 GMT)

    Sabri LamouchiImage source, Rex Features

Is it fair to call this a relegation six-pointer?

Rotherham, five points above the relegation zone, host Cardiff, who are four points clear of trouble.

The Millers looked to be cruising to safety after two wins and a draw in three games but back-to-back losses have left them looking over their shoulder.

Sabri Lamouchi's Bluebirds, meanwhile, fought back to claim a point against West Brom on Wednesday.

  9. Hapless Hoops seeking to get over the Bluespublished at 14:45 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2023

    QPR v Birmingham (15:00 GMT)

When these sides last met at St Andrew’s on Halloween weekend, QPR needed a win to return to the top of the Championship.

It’s fair to say the Rs season has deteriorated quicker than even the pumpkins.

Having taken 30 points from those first 16 matches, Rangers have added just 12 from their past 21 - kick-started by that 2-0 defeat at Birmingham.

The Hoops go into this match in 19th, seven points above the drop-zone and below the Blues on goal difference following their abject 6-1 hammering at lowly Blackpool on Tuesday.

Birmingham City went down 3-0 at Watford on Tuesday and have taken just a single point from their past four away games. They have one win in seven Championship games, though still better than QPR who have the same number from 14 matches.

Don’t expect a classic, but this promises to be a fascinating match with so much at stake.

The situation looks bleak for Huddersfield.

Last season's beaten play-off finalists are six points adrift of safety with nine games to play.

Neil Warnock's men have picked up two draws in their past three matches but the veteran boss knows better than anyone that it is wins that they need.

The Terriers have the worst away record in the league - with just two victories on their travels all season - so could probably do without a trip to sixth-placed Millwall, who have lost just three home games all season.

Gary Rowett's Lions could end the day as high as fourth.

Given Sunderland's impressive Stadium of Light is built on the site of the old Monkwearmouth pit, it is somewhat ironic that Tony Mowbray's side could do with a good shovel of coal in the boiler to get them moving again after slipping down to 12th.

It was always going to be difficult to sustain their promotion bid despite the talent at Mowbray's disposal - Manchester United loanee Amad Diallo is one player who the Sunderland boss has pointed to as being drained by the fixture schedule - as a tight-knit squad has been stretched by the constant Saturday-Tuesday workload.

One of the last teams you'd want to come to your place amid such a run are Luton Town. They can mix it with the best of them, and have a striker in Carlton Morris who is on a three-in-three streak in front of goal.

Today will be a tough afternoon for the hosts, with the Hatters eyeing up the chance to chisel down Sheffield United's points buffer in the top two.

  12. Can Preston be the spoke in Boro's wheel?published at 14:36 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2023

    Middlesbrough v Preston (15:00 GMT)

Having had their seemingly unstoppable march to promotion checked in midweek by a draw with an equally 'tails-up' Stoke City, a Chuba Akpom-fired Middlesbrough again set eyes on trimming down the gap on the top two - with Sheffield United in FA Cup action this weekend.

Standing before them are a Preston North End side who have enjoyed a purple patch of their own after a shaky spell. Ryan Lowe's transfer activity has been fruitful, with aptly named Everton striker Tom Cannon adding useful firepower to their front-line of late with three in five.

Boro's home advantage has brought wins in seven of their last eight, following that Stoke draw; Preston meanwhile have won the last three meetings and are unbeaten in seven overall themselves.

Something could give at a buoyant Riverside.

Good afternoon and welcome to the final Saturday EFL live text before the clocks go forward.

For teams in contention at the top, or looking to escape trouble at the bottom, it's all about wins now.

With second-placed Sheffield United busy with their FA Cup quarter-final with fellow Championship high-fliers Blackburn this weekend, Middlesbrough have a chance to cut the gap to the Blades to three points with a victory.

Boro were held by in-form Stoke on Tuesday before United came from a goal behind to win at Sunderland the following day.

How pivotal could that prove to be in the promotion run-in?

Today might go some way to telling us.

    Let's get going.
