Talking to everyone, looking at people's faces and their attitude, it's a little bit of numbness - where is the next three points going to come from? You look at the fixtures between now and the end of the season, this is a game where you have to target three points.

Swansea City had high hopes for this season when they won the south Wales derby on this ground last October, with a 2-0 victory sending them fourth in the Championship.

Since then there have been only three wins in 21 league games - and an FA Cup exit at the hands of today's opponents - plus a miserable January transfer window in which Swansea failed to sign a player.

Now only seven points above the bottom three, Russell Martin and his players could really do with a victory this lunchtime, not least because the return game at Cardiff City is the next fixture after this.

The atmosphere has been tense at the Swansea.com Stadium in recent weeks, which will not be lost on Nigel Pearson.

If his Bristol City can get on top, it could be another difficult day for Martin's struggling Swans.

The headline 'sleepwalking towards relegation' isn't far from the truth to be honest.

  7. Martin fined for Luton meleepublished at 12:17 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March 2023

Swansea City v Bristol City (12:30 GMT)

Swansea City head coach Russell Martin and Luton Town assistant boss Richie Kyle have been fined for improper behaviour, but avoided touchline bans.

Both clubs have also been fined by the Football Association (FA) following a "mass confrontation" during their bad-tempered Championship game on 4 March.

Luton have been fined £13,500 and Swansea £11,000, while Martin must pay £2,000 and Kyle £1,000.

The fines are the result of a melee which saw Martin and Kyle sent off.

Martin and Kyle admitted their behaviour had been improper and accepted standard penalties, while an independent commission found that the two clubs had "failed to ensure their benches conducted themselves in an orderly fashion".

The flashpoint came in the closing minutes of Luton's 1-0 win, when Hatters boss Rob Edwards stepped onto the field of play to protest about what he felt was "a hand to the face" of one of his players.

Martin reacted, as did Kyle, during a coming together involving staff and players from both clubs by the dugouts.

"Something goes on, their manager jumps on the pitch, I didn't like it," Martin said after the game.

Former Wales international Edwards said: "I have appealed something and gone on to the pitch so I have probably started the whole thing off, so I hold my hands up."

  8. Tanner staying at Ashton Gatepublished at 12:14 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March 2023

Swansea City v Bristol City (12:30 GMT)

Defender George Tanner has signed a new three-and-a-half-year deal with Bristol City, to stay until the summer of 2026.

The 23-year-old joined the Championship club in August 2021 from Carlisle United, but his first campaign was disrupted by a hamstring injury.

He has made 36 appearances for the club, with 23 coming this season.

"I'm over the moon, I'm so happy to commit my future to the club. It's really exciting times ahead," Tanner told BBC Radio Bristol.

"I've been through a period of tough times during my spell here. It started off well, I was straight into the team but then with the injuries and then at the start of this season being out of favour, I've had to work hard for my place.

"Since I've been back in the team I'm really happy with my performances. I've proved to myself and the club that I can be the main right-back going forward, and I can make that position my own."

  9. Martin 'would have left' Swans if he doubted futurepublished at 12:11 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March 2023

Swansea City v Bristol City (12:30 GMT)

Swansea City head coach Russell Martin says he would have resigned last month if he did not believe there were better days ahead.

Swansea have slipped to 17th in the table having won three of 21 league games since going fourth in October.

Martin has been criticised during his side's poor run - but is convinced the Swans will improve.

"If I wasn't [convinced] I would have left on the first of February," he said.

"That's the bottom line. If I wasn't convinced about what we are doing and the people we have here, I wouldn't be here - and I mean that."
