    Real Madrid 0-1 Barcelona

For all their good play and ball retention, Real still have not tested Marc-Andre ter Stegen in the Barcelona goal.

Yet another yellow, this time for Real defender Nacho, shoving Raphinha to the ground. You wouldn't be surprised if someone has a man sent off in the next 40 minutes.

Real Madrid's Eduardo Camavinga, looking to make up for his role in Barcelona's goal, tries his luck from 20 yards but it was still rising as Marc-Andre ter Stegen watched on, unfussed.

The team to score first in El Clasico have won 14 of the last 16 such games (two draws). Barcelona are the last team to win an El Clasico coming from behind, with their 3-2 victory at the Bernabeu in La Liga in April 2017.

Real Madrid is the "dream" move for players, says Erling Haaland's agent.

Haaland, 22, has had a prolific start to his Manchester City career, scoring 27 Premier League goals since moving from Borussia Dortmund.

But his boss Pep Guardiola has previously had to deny reports that the striker's contract contains a release clause for him to join Real in 2024.

"There's the Premier League and then there's also Madrid," said agent Rafaela Pimenta. They have something of their own that is also the dream for the players.

"Madrid keeps this magic going. They don't have the weekly competitions, but they have the Champions League."

Spanish giants Madrid have lifted the Champions League trophy - a competition City have yet to win - five times since 2014 and knocked the Premier League champions out of the tournament at the semi-final stage last year.

Brazilian lawyer Pimenta was the business partner of super agent Mino Raiola and has taken over the sole running of the agency since he died in April last year.

  9. Alaba explains Messi pick over team-mate Benzemapublished at 21:00 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March 2023

Austria captain David Alaba has explained why he voted for Paris St-Germain's Lionel Messi ahead of Real Madrid team-mate Karim Benzema at The Best FIFA awards after receiving racial abuse.

Alaba was targeted with messages and emojis sent to his social media accounts after his vote went to Argentina’s World Cup-winning captain Messi rather than Benzema in the polling for the men’s player of the year award.

Messi was confirmed as the winner of the prize at a ceremony in Paris on Monday ahead of France strikers Kylian Mbappe and Benzema.

Austria captain Alaba has pointed out he was voting on behalf of his national team, not in a personal capacity, and the majority preference was for Messi.

The 30-year-old, currently out of action with a hamstring injury, tweeted: “Regarding Fifa The Best Award: The Austrian national team vote for this award as a team, not me alone.

“Everyone in the team council is able to vote and that’s how it’s decided. Everyone knows, especially Karim, how much I admire him and his performances and I have often said for me he is the best striker in the world, and that is still the case. Without doubt.”

Brazil legend Ronaldinho's son Joao Mendes has signed a contract with Barcelona's youth academy.

The 18-year-old striker follows in the footsteps of his World Cup-winning father, who had five successful seasons at the Nou Camp.

Mendes terminated his contract at Brazilian Serie B side Cruzeiro to join Barcelona's Under-19 team on trial.

He had kept the identity of his father a secret until he secured a trial and deal with Cruzeiro.

Ronaldinho, 42, now works as an ambassador for Barcelona after retiring from football in 2015.

Mendes will be part of Barcelona's famous La Masia academy, which has produced icons such as Lionel Messi, Gerard Pique and current boss Xavi.

Not too sure how, but Barcelona have the lead at half-time.

Real Madrid had more of the ball, more chances, but gifted possession with some sloppy play from Eduardo Camavinga, Thibaut Courtois blocked Franck Kessie's shot and it then bounced in off a couple of Real defenders.

It's an own goal, no-one knows whether it should go to Eder Militao or Nacho, but no matter what, the visitors go in a goal ahead.

The own goal (currently officially given as an Eder Militao own goal, even though Nacho clearly got the last touch) is the fourth El Clasico own goal in the 21st century.

Three of them have benefitted Barcelona, with Ivan Helguera in May 2002 and Raphael Varane, now of Manchester United, in 2019 netting own goals in Real colours.

It's getting a bit feisty and before the goal went in Frenkie de Jong and Vinicius Jr were involved in some WWE action, with them both throwing each other about.

Vinicius Jr got a booking for his role, but De Jong, rather luckily, escaped a caution.

    Nacho own goal

Barcelona, with their first look at the Real Madrid goal, take the lead. The ball is played through, Franck Kessie takes the shot, it is saved by Thibaut Courtois but then bounces off Real defender Eder Militao and then his team-mate Nacho gets the final touch as it crosses the line for an own goal.

The goal had originally been ruled out for offside as Raphinha was in an offside position, but he makes no attempt to move to the ball, Kessie was onside and after a VAR check the goal stands.

It was poor from Real, with Eduardo Camavinga giving the ball away to start the move.
