Francisco Trincao out on the right-hand side makes a really good run. Jorginho looks like he is trying to get across to make the tackle.

Trincao beats the tackle and whips his effort just wide. I do think Aaron Ramsdale just had that covered.

Marin Jakolis gets the wrong side of Ben Johnson down the left and into the penalty area. The cross is fizzed across the face of goal but Hammers keeper Alphonse Areola does well to get a strong hand to it and divert it clear.

Sporting's early endeavour continues. Trincao cuts in from the right and whips a shot just past the far post. It prompts a roar of encouragement from the home fans. Maybe more of a wake-up call.

If they didn't realise it already, these Arsenal fans will now be aware they have a challenge on their hands here. Sporting look cool and composed. They've picked out a few gems of passes to make inroads. A real threat.

A chance for the visitors at London Stadium. Nemanja Nikolic starts the move for AEK Larnaca and gets the ball back on the edge of the penalty area.

But Aaron Cresswell closes him down quickly, forcing the shot, which flies harmlessly over the top.

Sporting continue to get into useful positions, but so far they've failed to find anything like a decent final ball.

Looks devastated does Takehiro Tomiyasu. It was just a really unfortunate fall from him as he got his studs stuck in the ground.

But now there is an opportunity for Ben White to show Gareth Southgate what he is missing out on.

There are plenty of Sporting fans at the Emirates. They're enjoying themselves too, bouncing around in that away end.

An early blow for Arsenal.

Takehiro Tomiyasu has injured himself by slipping in trying to make a tackle. He's pulled something and can't carry on.

Ben White, who missed out on a place in the England squad today, replaces him. As subs go, it is a good one, but it does potentially further stretch an Arsenal squad challenging for big honours.

Gianluca Scamacca will be looking to make an impact and nearly gets on the scoresheet inside the opening 10 minutes.

Pablo Fornals makes a burst to the edge of the penalty area and plays it wide left to Scamacca, who takes a touch to get it on his right foot and curl at goal from 20 yards out.

But it doesn't curl enough and it's just wide. Decent effort.

Sporting have clearly not come here to be pinned back and picked off. They are taking the game to the Gunners when they can.

Both sides need to be spot on with their passing as the game is so condensed at the moment. No one can afford to give it away in key areas.

Premier League fans know all about how tricky Trincao can be. He maybe didn't quite show what he is all about during his loan with Wolves, but he's shown tonight already in a few touches that he knows how to beat a man.

Jarrod Bowen, not in the England squad for the Euro 2024 qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine, gets free down the right and gets to the byeline but his pull-back can only find an away shirt.

Sporting pile forward in numbers. A clear sign of ambition. Unfortunately for them, Marcus Edwards can't pick a team-mate out in the box with a cross from the right.

Arsenal seeing a lot of the ball in these early stages. They won't have it all their own way tonight, though. Sporting are a fine side.

Manchester United

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire to BT Sport: "It's been a good two games over the two legs. Betis are a good team they're fifth in La Liga. We knew it wouldn't be an easy draw.

"They came at us and threw everything at us. But we expected a fast start from them. We knew if we didn't concede in the first 20 minutes it would have been a big part of the game well done.

"In the second half we controlled the game really well, we got the goal we deserved and after that we played well."

[On his lack of minutes this season] "Listen, I work hard at the training ground and that's only what you can do. I put everything into training. We have good coaches at this club, they put on really good sessions for us.

"It's not been too long since my last game it was only a couple of weeks ago. And I've started five, six or seven games since the World Cup.

"Obviously I want to play more and start more games. but I'm playing my part on and off the field. It's nice to get out there and lead the team which is the most important part for myself and for the group.

"I have an important role on and off the field at this club and every day I try and make this club succeed whether I'm playing or not. So that's my main focus at the moment. We've had a little set back in recent weeks so we just need to pick ourselves up and I think it's been a good response from the lads since then."

Gabriel Martinelli is almost in behind the Sporting defence inside the first minute. Oleksandr Zinchenko's pass has just a bit too much too much on it.

AEK Larnaca in (luminous) yellow and green stripes (think West Brom away) will be looking to make this a difficult night for West Ham, while the Hammers start with a two-goal cushion and will want an early goal and a stress-free night.

Expectations of success have not been as high as they are now around these parts for a while.

Arsenal will be looking towards bigger European nights next season, but right now this is a pretty hefty contest for them.
