It'll be interesting to see how Harry Maguire and John Stones cope with Mateo Retegui.

He's very similar in style to Harry Kane and will drop deep. He's very technically gifted and can manipulate the ball away from players.

They'll want to get in tight and make it uncomfortable for him all night.

There are seven groups of five teams, plus three groups of six teams. The four Nations League finalists - Croatia, the Netherlands, Italy and Spain - have gone into the smaller groups.

The top two sides in each of the 10 groups qualify directly for Euro 2024.

Germany automatically qualify as hosts, while the remaining three teams will come via the Nations League play-offs.

The groups start on 23 March and end on 21 November 2023.

  8. 'We need to put it right'published at 19:42 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2023

    Italy v England (19:45 GMT)

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate on Channel 4: "It's one of the hardest game in world football. It's not just the quality of the players but the playing against a nation steeped in history. We need to put it right tonight.

"Hendo was a big part of the midfield in the World Cup but hasn't trained fully over the last week so we're keeping him back.

"Kalvin [Phillips] has played well for us. He's a super player and he plays for a big club but has struggled to get in the team. It's a big opportunity for him

"Jack Grealish is in a good moment with his club. He is full of confidence. All our front players can receive the ball under pressure and that's important.

"We have to look at qualification over eight games and if we get a win here it's a great start.

"We need to play with personality, stand up and play the type of football we played a few months ago."

The big screen is now playing a tribute to Gianluca Vialli. The former Italy player and coach passed away in January and it's the first time the national team has played since.

There's been a statement from an FA Spokesperson after reports of an offensive banner about Maradona being in the stands:

"We strongly condemn the actions of the individual who travelled to Naples with a flag that had a highly offensive message on it.

"We immediately took steps to have their ticket cancelled before the match."

People want to be part of the environment that Gareth Southgate has created. Players want to be a big part of what he's doing. Players are frightened to miss out because they know how close they are to achieving something.

It's a very tight-knit squad and you have to work very hard to get into the XI.

  12. 'Stigma around mental health needs to go'published at 19:34 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2023

England full-back Ben Chilwell said the stigma around mental health "needs to go" after speaking about the help he received during his injury absence.

The 26-year-old was ruled out of last year's World Cup with a hamstring injury sustained weeks before the tournament.

He said the time was "very challenging" but that he was helped by speaking about the psychological impacts.

"I've been talking to someone for a few years now," said Chilwell.

"I think the stigma around it is silly really, especially with men and men in football in particular.

"The way it has helped me, it can definitely help everyone. The stigma around it is something that needs to go."

  13. 'Phillips has been great for Southgate'published at 19:32 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2023

    Italy v England (19:45 GMT)

Former England captain Steven Gerrard on Channel 4: "I like the team. I like that Bellingham could play as a 10 because we know Italian teams like to have a deep-lying midfielder.

"Kalvin [Phillips] doesn't need to play 90 minutes. If he can last 50 or 60 minutes then there is plenty of talent to come off the bench.

"He's been great for Gareth Southgate and we can't just talk about his lack of minutes."

  14. Southgate worried about 'decreasing' English talentpublished at 19:30 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2023

    Italy v England (19:45 GMT)

Gareth Southgate says he may need to start selecting from "the Championship or elsewhere" in future because of what he claims is the decreasing number of English players in the Premier League.

About 32% of those starting in the top flight are eligible for England.

The England manager, who has been in the role since 2016, highlighted two recent weekends where that percentage fell to 28%.

"The numbers are the numbers. They're not going up," said Southgate.

"It has been around 32% but that's down from 35% when I took over and 38% in the years before so the graph is clear - there's no argument about that.

"Twenty-eight per cent has happened in a couple of weekends in the last few weeks."

  15. Can Grealish claim starting role?published at 19:28 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2023

Jack Grealish has smashed a couple of shots into the top corner during the warm up.

He's been in very good form for City and starting tonight is a chance for him to make a claim to be a main part of this England team.

  16. 'Bellingham can attack'published at 19:27 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2023

    Italy v England (19:45 GMT)

    Paul Robinson
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

I'd expect to see Bellingham popping up in advanced areas and the other two [Rice and Phillips] can protect a back four that can be porous.

If you look at the bench, Jordan Henderson and maybe Conor Gallager are the only other options to sit in a deep role.

  17. 'Ask fans to be good tourists'published at 19:26 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2023

    Italy v England (19:45 GMT)

Security has been much talked about in the build-up with a friendly match between England and Italy fans called off over safety concerns.

Last week, eight football fans were arrested after violence flared between Eintracht Frankfurt and Napoli supporters before and after their Champions League match.

Southgate played down the issue, saying he was "excited" to travel to the city.

"I have never been to Naples before and the history of football here is really rich," he said.

"I am excited about playing in a city that loves football, with a great history.

"I can just about remember [Diego] Maradona when Napoli won the league.

"Always, we ask our fans to be good tourists and respect the local culture and we hope the game and the next couple of days passes with no problems."

  18. Still empty seats in Naplespublished at 19:24 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2023

    Italy v England (19:45 GMT)

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer in Naples

There have been suggestions here that Napoli fans reserve all their fierce, partisan passion for the club side rather than the national team - perhaps a reason there has not been a game involving the national side in the city for ten years.

Officials have been at pains to point out this is not the case but it is also true that there are still plenty of empty seats in Stadio Diego Armando Maradona with less than 30 minutes to kick-off.

It seems like only yesterday that Lionel Messi was hoisting the World Cup trophy aloft in Qatar last December after Argentina beat France on penalties following a remarkable final.

For the first time since that night at Lusail Stadium, Argentina are in action, hosting Panama in a friendly in Buenos Aires.

A capacity crowd of 83,000 fans will be watching on at El Monumental despite over 1.5 million supporters attempting to purchase tickets to see the world champions - including Messi, who is still involved following the World Cup triumph.

The PSG forward is just two strikes away from reaching 100 goals for Argentina.

  20. 'England are close to being successful'published at 19:19 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2023

    Italy v England (19:45 GMT)

Former England captain Steven Gerrard on Channel 4: "This group with this manager and coaching staff are still close to being successful.

"Gareth [Southgate] said earlier in the week that we just need to go and show we can beat this type of team."
