  1. Thanks and goodbyepublished at 23:00 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

That's all for this live page on a very mixed night for the two English clubs.

West Ham march on to move into the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League, but it is a humiliating exit from the Europa League for Manchester United, well beaten by Sevilla in Spain.

Thanks for your company and comments and, until next time, goodbye.

Manchester United were dumped out of the Europa League quarter-finals following a dreadful second-leg performance in defeat by Sevilla.

United were well below their best - creating almost nothing going forward, overrun in midfield and making two terrible mistakes in defence - as they exited Europe with a whimper.

The Spanish side were gifted the lead after eight minutes when Youssef En-Nesyri finished following an awful error from Harry Maguire, and Sevilla doubled their advantage shortly after half time with a looping header from defender Loic Bade.

Sevilla's win - and United's humiliation - was complete nine minutes from time when En-Nesyri again capitalised on a shocking mistake, this time from goalkeeper David de Gea, to complete the win.

Having been 2-0 up and cruising in the first leg at Old Trafford, Erik Ten Hag's side contrived to concede five times in the space of 90 minutes - two late own goals in Manchester and three times in Spain - to throw away their chance of European success.

This was the first of a series of potentially season-defining games for United - they take on Brighton at Wembley in the FA Cup semi-finals on Sunday and face a key Premier League match at Tottenham on 27 April - and they completely failed this test.

Sevilla meanwhile will play Juventus in a two-legged semi-final on 11 and 18 May. The Italian side beat Sporting 2-1 on aggregate in their quarter-final.

  3. West Ham fight back to reach Conference League semis - read the reportpublished at 22:57 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

FT: West Ham 4-1 Gent (Agg: 5-2)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport at the London Stadium

West Ham booked a Europa Conference League semi-final meeting with Dutch side AZ Alkmaar after a rousing comeback against Gent at London Stadium.

Michail Antonio scored twice, with Lucas Paqueta converting a penalty to make amends for his part in the visitors' 26th-minute opener.

Skipper Declan Rice added a brilliant third, finding the net with a low shot at the end of a surging run that started in his own half.

It was too much in the end for Gent, who were outclassed after taking the lead on aggregate through Hugo Cuypers' first-half strike.

Jarrod Bowen had a goal disallowed for handball, denying West Ham a fifth for only the second time in their European history.

As it is, they have a fifth semi-final to look forward to and retain the chance to emulate the 1965 European Cup Winners' Cup-winning side, and also to end a major trophy drought stretching back to 1980 and the FA Cup triumph against Arsenal.

For manager David Moyes, it also means what has at times been a torturous season could end in glory, although the Scot will be acutely aware European success would have to be accompanied by Premier League survival.

Brooks: Ten Hag saying he trusts some of the players on the pitch tonight. More fool him. Brighton will be relishing facing them and must be big favourites.

Paolo: We are still a million miles away from Man City! I’m hoping Brighton beat us on Sunday as I cannot imagine what will happen in the final... Haaland Hat trick!

  5. 'This shows squad isn't good enough'published at 22:52 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

FT: Sevilla 3-0 Manchester United (Agg: 5-2)

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes to BT Sport: "I think tonight has made Ten Hag’s mind up on a few of these players – that is probably the only good thing that will come out of this for Ten Hag.

"This shows the squad isn't good enough, if you have injuries. This squad can handle other games but when it comes to the crunch games, big atmosphere, it falls short.

"The quality drops a level when the big players aren’t fit. A disastrous night – we have had these nights throughout the season. This will help him summer wise. That first 20 minutes shows he needs better for the squad."

  7. 'Some players fighting for their careers'published at 22:48 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

FT: Sevilla 3-0 Man Utd (Agg 5-2)

Former Wales international Robbie Savage talking to BT Sport:

Lost for words. What on earth? What is De Gea trying to do? It is bad – it has been a terrible night for Man Utd, a terrible night for David De Gea. It is awful. Think of the five goals, two own goals in the first leg, gifted the first and third in this leg. No excuses. This us up there with the 7-0 v Liverpool.

Some of these players are playing for their Man Utd careers – is there any way back? I think it is going to be real tough for some of these players to recover. This game has just shown if a few of their main players aren’t fit, the squad is miles off challenging.

  10. Questions for de Gea?published at 22:43 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

FT: Sevilla 3-0 Man Utd (Agg 5-2)

Former Man Utd midfielder Owen Hargreaves on BT Sport:

"De Gea has been a brilliant servant and a great shot stopper. But he is not good with his feet and Ten Hag wants to play out. Does he fit Ten Hag’s philosophy? Based on today? No."

  11. 'Made more mistakes'published at 22:41 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

FT: Sevilla 3-0 Manchester United (Agg: 5-2)

    Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen, speaking to BT Sport, says: "A lot of things happened. We didn't really give them a game from the first minute and we gave them a lot of opportunities to finish us off.

"We lost a bit of our coolness, we made more mistakes than we do usually and the whole team could not catch up with mistakes our team-mates made.

"If you give away goals like we did, you lose, it's nothing to do with the atmosphere. Our own game was not strong enough. It's football, sometimes you have good days, sometimes you have bad days and it was a bad day. Luckily we have a game in four days.

"Every football player makes mistakes, they punished us straight away. It's how we bounce back and today we were not strong enough to bounce back from the mistakes.

"The mentality has to change, we know it will be a completely different opponent and different style so from tomorrow we will be focusing on Brighton."

"They knew what they had to do and they came out after half-time and did it."

Some perspective here. Yes it was a bad performance. But people are saying they’ve fallen apart without just one player. It’s not just Fernandes though, Varane and Martinez also missing, Rashford and Shaw only fit enough for the bench? That’s half the team!

They lead Feyenoord 4-2 on aggregate with around eight minutes to go.

  15. 'They had more passion, more desire, more willingness'published at 22:28 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

FT: Sevilla 3-0 Manchester United (Agg: 5-2)

    Manchester United

Furious Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, speaking to BT Sport, says: "We have to do better, that's the demand. We were not composed, not calm. We didn't beat the press, when you do there are so many spaces behind, and it was obvious at the start how to do it.

"We lost the battles, they had more passion, more desire, more willingness, that's difficult to win games.

"We can't run away from it. On Sunday we have another opportunity and have to step up and show more character and personality.

"It's not about them [the players they were missing], it's about the players on the pitch. They have to perform, I believe in them and trust them but they have to show it and they were not good enough.

"We have shown on so many occasions good things but tonight we weren't ready for the game. At this level, playing for Manchester United, you have to be ready for every game.

"This was a great opportunity, a great occasion, to win something and we gave it away - we have to blame ourselves. It's gone, we can't change it. We have to look forward to Sunday, that's the next opportunity."

  16. 'There wasn't a flicker of a comeback in that'published at 22:26 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

FT: Sevilla 3-0 Manchester United (Agg: 5-2)

    Rob Green
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Well you go across the board and the goals are avoidable. You cannot play a tie and gift them four goals. They gifted them another one when it was offside it could have been worse and been more. Man United needed it to finish with 15 minutes to go and there wasn't a flicker of a comeback in that.

You just hope that it doesn't affect the players and the team.

But you know they are stretched and that's what they've got at the minute.

  17. 'It is a brilliant achievement'published at 22:24 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

FT: West Ham 4-1 Gent (Agg: 5-2)

    West Ham United

West Ham manager David Moyes speaking to BT Sport: "It is a brilliant achievement. To do it two years in a row is special, it really is. It doesn't happen very often so we'll look forward to that semi-finals.

"I thought we started the second half really well. I was angry because we missed two great chances before we got the penalty. But once we got the goal we kept at them and we should have finished them off even more.

"It's been tough. We've had so many positive things coming from European football that it has built a great relationship with the players. It was really important we got to the semi-finals. Gent caused us problems and we had to work hard for the win.

"All the good teams run into form at this time of the year because they need to win things or get in finals. We scored four tonight and I thought we could have scored more. We need to continue to score goals.

"AZ Alkmaar have had good momentum all year and have a good young team with lots of new talent. It will be a really hard game. For them to come from 2-0 down and get through is a great achievement."

At Old Trafford you are 2 nil up and you are comfortable.

You still go to this game full of confidence and they were miles off it today. If they go to Brighton at the weekend like this then Brighton will do worse than Sevilla have done tonight.

    It's disappointing.

Congrats to West Ham for making the Conference League semi-finals, they deserve it, but the fact that a side in the relegation battle will likely cruise to the title shows how shambolic the Conference League is. Absolutely no use for it beyond giving mediocre sides something to celebrate.
