I'm sure the players will be super excited to have the packed out stadium [and to play in front of such a big crowd].

Over the past year or so the attendances at Arsenal, particularly in the earlier rounds of this competition, have been building.

It is great to see, finally. Over the years, many a player and club have been pushing for this - and to be in a semi-final of the Champions League again, as the only English team to have won it before, means maybe it is on the cards for them to get back to the final this year.

Hugely experienced captain Alexandra Popp's return is a huge boost for Wolfsburg, with whom the inspirational Germany forward won the Champions League in 2012-13 and 2013-14.

England fans will doubtless remember how Germany were cruelly deprived of Popp during the warm-up to the final of Euro 2022, in which she finished level on six goals with competition top scorer Beth Mead despite playing 89 minutes fewer than the Lionesses hotshot.

Popp was in the starting line-up when Wolfsburg and Arsenal met for the first time, helping her team win 2-0 at Meadow Park in the first leg of the 2012-13 semi-finals.

"We see her as a leader," manager Tommy Stroot said in the build-up to this game, describing Popp's involvement as an "important factor" on a potentially testing night for the visitors.

  7. 'The game has gone to a different level since the Euros'published at 17:34 British Summer Time 1 May 2023

    Arsenal v Wolfsburg (17:45 BST)

Former Arsenal forward Lianne Sanderson speaking on Dazn: "The women's game in England has gone to a different level since the Lionesses won the Euros, and thankfully it is sustainable now. Before people used to come and go - the crowds wouldn't come back - but tonight the fans are going to be absolutely massive.

"Arsenal are not going to want to go out at the stage of the competition. Last year they went out in the quarter-finals against Wolfsburg, and I think the fact that Arsenal are still in it, even though a lot of people wrote them off after the first leg with all the injuries, is fantastic. We're set up for a fantastic game."

"I remember the semi-final I played in [for Arsenal] back in 2007 like it was yesterday, and we won it. I hope the girls can go all the way.

"They are going to have to do a lot to get past this amazing Wolfsburg team. But I'm excited: a sold-out crowd and it is going to be brilliant."

Arsenal defender Lotte Wubben-Moy speaking in the pre-match press conference: "I know how much help I gave to the men's players when I was a young girl. I hope every Gooner there will channel their inner young Gooner and scream their hearts out, because I know that's what we deserve."

On club legend Kelly Smith returning as a member of staff: "I remember going to watch Kelly as a young girl. I got her to sign my Oyster card holder - I still have that holder. Maybe 10 years later, I'm on the pitch at Colney training with her as a 16-year-old. A few years later, she's my coach.

"Already, it's just having her around and being conscious she's watching and maybe going to give you a titbit that will change the way you play football or have a shot. It's good for the women's game and I hope to see more and more of it."

Today's matchday programme has plenty of flashbacks to the 2007 Arsenal team who won the Champions League as part of their historic quadruple.

Part of that squad was England forward Kelly Smith - though she was sent off in the semi-finals and had to sit out the deciding showpiece.

She returned to the club in a coaching role last week, giving them a boost before today's semi-final.

The player on the front of the programme, Lia Walti, could also have a massive role in this second leg. Her form has been instrumental in guiding Arsenal to the last four.

Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall speaking in his pre-match press conference: "We're going to put everything out there. It's one game that separates us from a dream, so let's leave everything on the pitch. The players were magnificent in Germany, finding solutions in a really high-pressure situation. If we can do that again, I'll be very proud.

"This is built on the players, coaches and people who were at this club before this team. It's astonishing that it's happening and we're going to do our very best to repay the faith in us and repay the favour."

It's a sell-out at Emirates Stadium tonight and we have already seen the crowd help Arsenal on their European journey this season.

Their 2-0 win over Bayern Munich here was heralded as one of the best performances this season and this week both manager Jonas Eidevall and defender Lotte Wubben-Moy have called on the fans to bring their voices again.

With the tie finely poised at 2-2, Arsenal have given themselves a brilliant opportunity of progressing to the final for just the second time.

If they achieve it, the 60,000-odd expected here at Emirates Stadium are going to be partying until late.

The second Champions League finalists of the 2022-23 season are about to be decided - and it couldn't be tighter after a superb fightback by Arsenal eight days ago.

In the first leg of this semi-final, runaway competition top scorer Ewa Pajor and Sveindis Jane Jonsdottir put Wolfsburg 2-0 up after 24 minutes and looking good to reach the final for the first time since losing the showpiece to Lyon in 2019-20.

Arsenal hit back. Rafaelle Souza atoned for gifting Jonsdottir the second by heading a reply after 45 minutes, and the impressively industrious Stina Blackstenius drew her side level 24 minutes later.

It's teed up the second leg intriguingly. Let's take a look at how the teams have lined up for the decider!
