Pep Guardiola sent a chill down the spine of Premier League defenders when he claimed Erling Haaland's staggering goalscoring feats might be beaten - by Erling Haaland.

The Norwegian has set a new 35-goal Premier League record, eclipsing Alan Shearer and Andy Cole, and is now on 51 for the season, 12 short of Dixie Dean's all-time English record for all competitions.

Few would argue against Haaland matching it. And if he does, Guardiola thinks he will beat it.

"This record will be broken sooner or later," he said. "Maybe by him in the future because he will score a lot of goals.

"We are very pleased for him. He is a joy. Everyone is happy to have him with us."

  2. 'There is a lot at stake'published at 14:13 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

Tottenham v Crystal Palace (15:00 BST)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham interim manager Ryan Mason says his players are "playing for their careers" in the remaining four games of the season.

First, on his side's approach against Crystal Palace today, Mason told Premier League Productions: "It's to try and win the game and to be the team that scores first, that's the goal. We want to be on the front foot.

"They're in a very good moment. They have changed manager and responded well.

"They are a dangerous team but we are confident we can hurt them too."

While a top-four finish is likely now out of reach, Spurs, in seventh, know a top-six finish would at least guarantee Europa League football next season.

"There's loads at stake," Mason said.

"The players are playing for their careers, to be here next season."

  3. Expect an exciting Palace performancepublished at 14:12 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

    Alex Howell
Football reporter at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

It's not surprising that Roy Hodgson has selected the same side that produced the exciting 4-3 win against West Ham last week. The football they played in that game was some of the best of the season and a victory here could see them pick up a fifth win since Hodgson's return.

  4. 'From the start I believed the players would get us out of trouble'published at 14:11 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

Tottenham v Crystal Palace (15:00 BST)

Roy Hodgson said he always believed Crystal Palace had players who could get them out of trouble this season, but even he did not expect to reach 40 points with four games still to play.

The Eagles have won four, drawn one and lost one of his six games in charge to lift the club up to 11th in the table.

Asked if he thought that target would be met within his first six games, Hodgson said: "I don’t know what my expectations were really.

"I think it’s always better when you come into a new job keeping expectations at a level so that the reality you find yourself in will give you the chance to match them.

"Right from the start, I found a group of players I thought were good and I believed in. I believed they would get the club out of trouble.

"Did I expect to get to this point with four matches left to play? I can’t really say that I did, but on the other hand I can’t say it was something I really thought about."

  5. 'We have still got a lot to fight for'published at 14:10 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

Tottenham v Crystal Palace (15:00 BST)

Losing to Crystal Palace coupled with a draw or more for Manchester United against West Ham on Sunday would mathematically put an end to Tottenham's top-four hopes.

The north London club are currently seventh in the table, nine points behind fourth-placed Manchester United having played a game more.

"It’s important that we win. The only thing we can do is take care of ourselves," said interim boss Ryan Mason.

"The league table will speak for itself at the end of the season because it doesn’t lie. We’ve had a very up and down season and many things have happened.

"It’s no secret we are disappointed with how it’s gone but at the same time it’s not over yet. We have still got a lot to fight for and we all know that.

"What we probably can see from the first two performances is we've got a group that are working hard and working for each other.

"Sometimes you don't get the results. We need to create a feeling where everyone is aligned, the club, the players and the fans. Inside these walls we can feel we are together."

  6. 'That was disgusting'published at 14:08 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

    Bournemouth v Chelsea (15:00 BST)

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville says Chelsea's performance against Arsenal on Tuesday was "disgusting" and "one of the worst" he has seen given the number of talented players on display.

The Blues, who have invested over £600m into their squad this year, conceded three first-half goals to London rivals Arsenal in a 3-1 defeat.

"That was disgusting," Neville told Sky Sports.

"One of the worst performances from a group of players on a teamsheet. In other words - the best team on paper I have seen play as badly as that.

"That was a shame, they were pathetic, they are strong words but they are World Cup winners, internationals and expensive players. I really can’t believe it. I don’t know what Frank Lampard will be thinking but he will be thinking the same things I am.

"That was as bad as I have seen, he will be disgusted with what he saw in the first half.

"When you sometimes interpret the language of a manager on television, I don’t know the exact words that were used after the game but they were strong words. You can times that by a thousand for what they are thinking in the dressing room and what they are thinking privately with their coaching staff."

Neville also said co-owner Todd Boehly has been "playing Football Manager" in his running of the club.

"Boehly has had a nightmare and misread this league. I'm sure he'll learn quickly," said Neville.

"What has happened this season is purely down to him. He needed to keep the footballing department together. He's the non-footballing department."

  7. 'Everybody knows the situation I came into' - Lampardpublished at 14:07 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

    Bournemouth v Chelsea (15:00 BST)

Frank Lampard says he has had to accept the relentlessness nature of his job since returning to Chelsea as interim boss.

The 44-year-old has now lost 10 consecutive games in all competitions this season across his time at Everton and Chelsea and could equal former Norwich boss Daniel Farke's record of 11 in a single season.

Lampard admits it has been a tough spell but is determined to put things right before his interim spell at Stamford Bridge ends.

"I'm here in this period and I'm working with the squad to get some form of turnaround," he said. "I’ve had three permanent jobs, this is my fourth as such and I think everybody understands the difficulty of the situation I have come into.

"I understood it coming in especially in those first two or three weeks where we played five games and two of those were against Real Madrid. I haven't had much time to really lay much down. You have to accept that as a consequence of the job."

"As much as you have your great moments where everything feels easy, you have your moments where it is not so."

So a big early call from Sam Allardyce to drop goalkeeper Illan Meslier, who has been an ever-present in the Leeds goal this season but has been guilty of a few errors in recent weeks.

Having already reached Hodgson's target of 40 points, the 75-year-old will once again hope a free-flowing attack featuring the likes of Eberechi Eze, Michael Olise and Wilfried Zaha can deliver a fifth win in seven games.

  15. 'Haaland will come close to Dean's all-time record'published at 13:57 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

Man City v Leeds (15:00 BST)

Former Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam believes Erling Haaland "will come close" to breaking Dixie Dean’s record of 63 goals in a season.

Dean set the record in 1927-28 playing for Everton where he scored 60 goals in 39 league games. Norway striker Haaland remains short of that but bagged his 51st goal of the season against West Ham.

"They [Manchester City] have nine games left if they make it to the Champions League final," Haaland told the Football Daily podcast.

"[You have to assume Erling] Haaland will get a couple of hat-tricks in that. So he will come close to getting there [to the all-time English record for most goals in a season across all competitions, which stands at 63].

"The only thing that could stop him is if Pep is 3-0 up and he takes him off after 60 minutes.

"He still needs a lot of luck to beat Dean's record."

    • Man City have won their past three Premier League games against Leeds by an aggregate score of 14-1 – as many times as they had beaten them in their previous 15 meetings in the competition (D5 L7).
    • Leeds set a new Premier League record for goals conceded in a month during April, shipping 23 goals in seven games. It was the most by a top-flight side in one month since Birmingham City in April 1965 (also 23).
    • Nineteen-year-old Wilfried Gnonto has assisted three Premier League goals in his past six appearances in the competition and has four assists this season for Leeds – the only Whites player to assist more goals in a Premier League season as a teenager was Gary Kelly in 1993-94 (five).
  17. 'All focus is on tomorrow' - Guardiolapublished at 13:53 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

Man City v Leeds (15:00 BST)

Pep Guardiola insists he is fully focused on Manchester City's game against Leeds this weekend, despite their looming Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid.

City travel to the Bernabeu for the first leg on Tuesday but first have a chance to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League against Leeds United.

The City boss is hopeful Kevin de Bruyne will be available after missing wins over Fulham and West Ham following a knock he picked up against Arsenal.

"He trained yesterday and trained good. Today, we train and then we will decide after training," Guardiola said.

"Losing or missing just one week or 10 days at this stage of the season is not a problem. The same happened with Nathan (Ake). If he's fit, he can play."

After being knocked out of the Champions League by Real in the semi-finals last season, Guardiola would be forgiven for keeping one eye on the tie.

However, he was bullish in his response to whether it was a distraction.

"No, it's a lot of games," he said. "The Premier League is so nice. We want to go four points above Arsenal and all focus is on tomorrow."
