  1. Post update

    Burnley

This is as far as we go in the final EFL live text of the season.

It's been an incredible day of drama in the Championship and League Two.

Sunderland sealed their place in the top six thanks to a thumping 3-0 win at Preston, coupled with Millwall's second-half capitulation at home to Blackburn.

In League Two, Northampton secured third place with a 1-0 win at Tranmere that meant Stockport had to settle for the play-offs..

    Speaking of which...

We're not done for the season yet.

We'll have live text coverage of all the play-off semi-finals and finals.

The mayhem gets under way on Friday night when Peterborough host Sheffield Wednesday in League One.

Thanks for your company today and hope you can join us then.

    Cheers!

Dan: In Crete - watched it with my old man and my fiancee, and a Blackburn fan on the left watching the Millwall game. At halftime I had a thought of 'I don’t care what happens, I’m so proud to be a Sunderland fan at the moment' - and suddenly we’re in the play-offs!

Tony Carter: The Championship never fails to deliver drama. And excited as a neutral for the play-off semi-finals, as think they will be very close. Well done Sunderland as they have had a great season. Am I feeling a Boro v Sunderland final?

Lonely Goalpost: Michael Carrick and Mark Robins will meet again in the play-offs. In the 10-year anniversary of Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement you have two of his former players doing great jobs.Robins, especially so.

  3. Mowbray 'delighted' for Black Cats' supporters

    FT: Preston 0-3 Sunderland

Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray told BBC Radio Newcastle: "I'm delighted for the supporters.

"It's an incredible scenario to see the people of Sunderland enjoying football so much, coming in their huge numbers.

"It's going to be awesome at the weekend at the Stadium of Light. We have to find another performance and we have to prepare the rest of the week and be ready for Luton."

  4. Promotion hasn't sunk in for Cobblers boss Brady

    FT: Tranmere 0-1 Northampton

    Northampton celebrate

Northampton boss Jon Brady told BBC Radio 5 live:

"It's more of a relief, especially with what we've gone through with all the injuries.

"Since Christmas we've had 10 players out every game, players that we've managed to get in that would take a minimum wage, they've been discarded by other League Two clubs, have come in and helped brilliantly

"We've found a way and that's been our motto. After last season it's trying to let this sink in somehow that we've got over the line.

"We've been through a lot of pain as well. Three or four weeks ago we had no fit defenders, we had to play central midfielders at centre-back, Sam Hoskins had to play right-back.

"That group is so together and it's been incredible. It hasn't sunk in yet.

"The first season I took over we had 20 games to go and we narrowly missed on staying in League One by three points. That was hard to take.

"Over the last two seasons we've got 163 points, last season we got all the way to the end, but Scunthorpe fielded an under-18 side and Bristol Rovers were allowed to score all the goals they wanted and they got one more than us. It deeply hurt and left a scar."

  5. Penny for this man's thoughts

    #bbcefl

    Stoke manager Alex Neil

Alex Neil led Sunderland out of League One this time 12 months ago as they finally escaped from four years in the third tier.

He walked out last August to take over at Stoke, with Tony Mowbray replacing him.

Mowbray has led Sunderland into the play-offs after that brilliant 3-0 win at Preston. Neil finished 16th with Stoke.

Mowbray had been out of work after leaving Blackburn. He's now kept his old club out of the play-offs on goal difference.

    Football, eh?

  6. Championship recap

    #bbcefl

    Sunedrland celebrate

Preston 0-3 Sunderland: The Black Cats entered the game with it all to do, needing maximum points and other results to go their way. They did their bit and pummelled Preston into submission and they sneak into the play-offs.

Millwall 3-4 Blackburn: Heartbreak for Millwall who drop out of the Championship play-off places after a stunning second-half fightback from Rovers - who themselves miss out on the top six on goal difference.

Burnley 3-0 Cardiff: Burnley cap off a truly spectacular season in style and break the 100-point barrier.

Swansea 3-3 West Brom: West Brom gave up the lead twice and eventually unravelled against a tough Swansea side to miss out on the play-offs.

Middlesbrough 1-1 Coventry City: A dress rehearsal for both sides, who will meet each other in the play-offs - with the Sky Blues sealing fifth.

Birmingham City 1-2 Sheffield United: Two goals in three minutes saw the already promoted Blades sign off the season in style.

Huddersfield 2-0 Reading: Neil Warnock's resurgent side put the final nail in the already relegated Reading coffin.

Luton 0-0 Hull: The Hatters already had one eye on the play-offs and made a number of changes before this goalless stalemate. They end the regular season unbeaten through their last 14 matches.

Norwich 0-1 Blackpool: Norwich enter the off-season in search of answers and the already relegated Tangerines drop into League One with a win.

Watford 2-0 Stoke: The Hornets cruise to victory thanks to a pair of goals deep in the second half.

Wigan 0-0 Rotherham: Chances were few and far between for both sides. The Millers' survival was already sealed while the Latics will play in League One next term.

QPR 0-2 Bristol City: The Hoops' turbulent season ends in defeat in a one-sided affair. It was the Robins first win on the final day of the season since 2015.

  7. 'An incredible achievement from an incredible squad'

    FT: Tranmere 0-1 Northampton

Injured captain Jon Guthrie told BBC Radio Northampton:

"I hated every minute of that. It's been a long week. It was horrible watching it but the boys were brilliant and Hosk (Sam Hoskins) came up trumps again as he has all season.

"The boys defended and dug in, and it sums up what we've done all season.

"We said all season that we'd forgotten about last season but it never really leaves you. Even coming in today, it's hard to forget it and it comes into the back of your head.

"With the injuries we've had I don't think there's another squad that could have gone through what we have and got promoted. It shows the character, the strength and the quality of the players we have got. I'm so happy.

"It's an incredible achievement from an incredible squad."

  8. 'My most rewarding promotion'

    FT: Tranmere 0-1 Northampton

    Northampton celebrate promotion

Assistant manager Colin Calderwood told BBC Radio Northampton:

"This is the most rewarding promotion I have been involved in because in a squad list of 1-28 we have been using numbers 21-28.

"It is testament to the coaching Jon [Brady, manager] has given them that there has been no real difference in the performance of the team."

  9. Post update

Easy to forget after all that from the Championship that League Two came to a close earlier today.

Let's have some reaction from Northampton's promotion shall we?

  11. Can Coventry and Luton spoil possible North East gathering at Wembley?

    #bbcefl

    Coventry City

To quote Russell Crowe in Gladiator, "Are you not entertained?!"

An afternoon of football that has delivered and then some, and the good news, is we have four high-octane play-off semi-finals in store over the next nine days.

Sat 13 May: Sunderland v Luton (KO 17:30 BST)

Sun 14 May: Coventry v Middlesbrough (KO 12:00 BST)

Tue 16 May: Luton v Sunderland (KO 20:00 BST)

Wed 17 May: Middlesbrough v Coventry (KO 20:00 BST)

Four great games to look forward to and we will be with you every step of the way with live text commentary to see who makes the play-off final at Wembley on Saturday, 27 May.

  12. Both teams miss out at the Den

    FT: Millwall 3-4 Blackburn

Millwall captain Shaun Hutchinson with his hands on his head

Heartbreak for Millwall. In their hands but it all slipped away in 45 second half minutes.

A bittersweet feeling for Blackburn. They end with a first victory in nine games, but it was not enough for their own play-off hopes.

Where was this form when they really needed it over the last two months?

  13. Post update

    FT: Preston 0-3 Sunderland

    Jack Clarke

The Sunderland players and staff head over to the 6,000 travelling Black Cat fans to celebrate this superb end to the season.

Gaffer Tony Mowbray looks absolutely drained as well as drenched.

Their season isn't done yet though... Luton await in the play-offs.

  14. Championship: The winners and losers

    #bbcefl

    Top 10 in the Championship

Only two from five were ever going to bundle their way into the final reckoning here in the Championship play-offs.

In the event, it was Coventry who retained their spot and Sunderland who gatecrashed, with Millwall crushingly missing out, Blackburn doing their best to get there and West Brom's bid flailing in South Wales.

It means Luton, Middlesbrough, Coventry and Sunderland will take part in the play-offs.

Luton the only one of that quartet never to have played in the modern-era Premier League. They last graced the top tier a season before the 'whole new ball game' came into being.

Special word too for champions Burnley, who couldn't surpass Reading's record but did surpass 100 points for the first time since Leicester in 2013-14.

Saikat Sanyal: Even as a Newcastle fan, amazing how well Sunderland have done this season despite their setbacks of Neil, Stewart etc. Would absolutely love the Tyne-Wear derby to be a Premier League fixture again next season.

It looked like it was going to a case of close but not close enough for Sunderland at half-time today but three second half goals for them and three for Blackburn at Millwall have seen them secure sixth spot.

  16. FULL-TIME

    Norwich 0-1 Blackpool

Norwich concede early and were unable to level-up in this cagey affair.

Relegated Blackpool head into League One with a little spring in their step.

The Canaries enter the offseason frustrated, looking for answers, and into a new era without striker Teemu Pukki who was unable to score in his final game in a Norwich shirt.

  17. FULL-TIME

    Huddersfield 2-0 Reading

Huddersfield break Reading hearts for the second time in a week.

Neil Warnock's side midweek win relegated the visitors and condemned them to League One.

And today they've comfortably beaten them 2-0.

Reading barely put up a fight.

  18. FULL-TIME

    Middlesbrough 1-1 Coventry

    Coventry fans

This game has turned out to be a bit of a dress rehearsal, as the two sides both go into the Championship play-offs.

As it happens, fourth will play fifth. Boro will play Coventry again.

Bring on rounds two and three of this little affair.

  19. FULL-TIME

    QPR 0-2 Bristol City

Winning finish for Nigel Pearson and Bristol City, thanks to goals from Mark Sykes and Sam Bell.

QPR and Gareth Ainsworth will just be glad to put this season to bed, and start again next season.

  20. FULL-TIME

    Birmingham 1-2 Sheff Utd

Sheffield United sign off in style.

Goals from Oli McBurnie and James McAtee see the Blades head for the Premier League with 91 points.

Great effort from Paul Heckgbottom's men.
