  3. 'I'm glad to say I'm disappointed it's only a draw'published at 15:59 British Summer Time 13 May 2023

    FT: Leeds 2-2 Newcastle

    Leeds United

Leeds boss Sam Allardyce to BT Sport: "I'm very satisfied with how they've applied themselves. There are lots of areas with room for improvement but we didn't get disspirited even though we made life extremely difficult for ourselves.

"We missed a penalty, gave two away and drew 2-2. I think we'd be saying what a great three points if we scored that penalty for 2-0.

"We made sure to stay in the game. We looked like it would pan out from them. Another penalty, I'm not that sure whether the push was enough to give it, a really good response with a good goal for 2-2.

"We got a player sent off and had to see the last few minutes out.

"Overall our defending was magnificent today. We are moving in the right direction. We've pleased the crowd somewhat - we got them in the game and they helped us.

"It's a pity we weren't more professional at the right times or that would have been a win.

"It's imperative we try to stay in this league. I'm glad to say I'm disappointed it's only a draw. It's our fault we haven't won today. We have to stop giving penalties away. I was talking to them about staying on their feet. I don't like it when they ignore me."

  4. 'You have to be the calmest man in the stadium'published at 15:58 British Summer Time 13 May 2023

    FT: Leeds 2-2 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Speaking to BBC Sport, Newcastle striker Callum Wilson said: "It was not a nice game. You come away from home and you don't want that type of game. Unfortunately, they scored the first goal so it was an uphill battle but we managed to get ourselves back in the game.

"Nick Pope was fantastic and saved that penalty and kept us in the game, we had a few lapses of concentration towards the end of the game and conceded."

On his two penalties: "As a striker, you try not to do too much practice. You know where the back of the net is. You are always confident and back yourself and your ability to score. Whether it is form the spot or a one or one, you have to be the calmest man in the stadium and I tried to be that. Today, we are a point closer [to Champions League qualification] and we will take the positives."

United having the same problem they've had all season long: being unable to convert their chances into goals. At this stage of the season, one can't help but worry whether they'll rue the lack of a proper goalscorer. This game needs to be put to bed as soon as possible. They could have had four by now.

    Ben

Richard: At Old Trafford, we're watching a team who looks like they're on the beach with nothing to play for....and Wolves.

  6. 'Struggling to make sense of it all'published at 15:57 British Summer Time 13 May 2023

    FT: Leeds 2-2 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Speaking to BT Sport, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said: "I'm struggling to make sense of it all. From 1-0 down, it could have been 2-0 down, and then we were 2-1 up hoping to win the game and we didn’t."

On Leeds' opening goal: "It was their first attack and we hadn't stared really well. When they get the penalty you fear the worst as we hadn’t created too many chances until that. I thought we played well at times without hitting our best form and we were a bit rushed around the box but we showed character to come back."

On Callum Wilson's penalties: "The way he took his two penalties was outstanding. The first one was excellent.

"It’s the hardest league in the world and we are under no illusions as to how difficult it is. We got our noses in front, which makes it difficult to take but we'll move on to the next one."

  7. 'We'll fight right to the end'published at 15:56 British Summer Time 13 May 2023

    FT: Leeds 2-2 Newcastle

    Leeds United

Leeds boss Sam Allardyce to BBC Sport: "Crazy is an understatement. I don't believe what's happened out there, what we've done to ourselves.

"That would have made life a lot easier if we'd have scored that penalty. I think we'd have won. Then we shot ourselves in the foot with two penalties and a red card. It's a tremendous point in the circumstances.

"I've been talking about staying on your feet all week and they haven't listened. They have to listen next week. We can't afford to make rash tackles like today.

"There is a lot of spirit and fight in the camp. They didn't let their heads go down. We defended exceptionally well when we went down to 10 men. We're standing up to be counted. A lot of what happened today was our fault, not Newcastle's ploay. Polish that up, get down to West Ham and see what we can do.

"Now we have to keep our fingers crossed the others don't pick points up. If they win that makes life extremelty difficult. Who knows? We'll fight right to the end."

It's all felt very comfortable for Manchester United but they really should be two or three goals up, with Antony in particular having missed a number of good chances.

Despite that, he had a good first 45 minutes overall and the run towards the end of the first half from inside his own half had the stadium on its feet before he perhaps made the wrong choice to pass to Anthony Martial rather than Jadon Sancho, who looked to be in a better position.

Still, Manchester United are winning and are doing so without Marcus Rashford. So far, so good.

Chelsea are missing a proper number nine. Someone who will put their neck on the line or score a scrappy goal.

  10. 'A couple of details let us down'published at 15:54 British Summer Time 13 May 2023

    FT: Leeds 2-2 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Speaking to BBC Sport, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said: "It was a strange game. From going 2-0 down and then going 2-1 up and not seeing the game out. We are disappointed now but it could be a big point. Sometimes you have to take the positives and we were OK today without being at our very best.

"The game swings on huge moments. Nick Pope makes massive save for us, as he has done all season, and it was a huge moment. Then we got our penalties. We could have been better around the box but we couldn’t see the game out."

On Callum Wilson's penalties: "He was ice cool today, they were two pressure moments. The second one especially after scoring the first one, he changed where he went. You cannot underestimate how difficult today was for us with Leeds having a new manager and the crowd.

"They played direct with a set piece threat and a couple of details let us down. We are after nine points [from their remaining matches] and we know we have difficult the fixtures are. We are looking forward to Brighton. At the start of the season, if you had said that it would be in our hands, we would have snapped your arm off."

  11. Postpublished at 15:53 British Summer Time 13 May 2023

    HT: Chelsea 0-1 Nottingham Forest

It was telling during the first half at Stamford Bridge that Mateo Kovacic went down injured and was down for a decent amount of time receiving treatment before then leaving the field.

It still took Chelsea a few minutes after play resumed to get a substitute ready and on to the field to replace him.

The Blues don't look ready and up for the fight at all.

    United need to be careful.

These are the games where you are 1-0 up feels as if you are cruising.

It only takes one chance, one mistake, giving away a penalty, and their season could be completely changed.

They need one more goal then they can relax.

  14. HALF-TIMEpublished at 15:49 British Summer Time 13 May 2023

    Chelsea 0-1 Nottingham Forest

Forest are 45 minutes from pulling off what would be a huge, huge result in their quest to stay up. As it stands, they're five points clear of the bottom three.

Chelsea continue to look so much less than the sum of their parts.

There is barely a ripple of applause as the whistle goes for half-time.

It has been a flat, empty half of football between a Fulham team largely in control and a Southampton side, who have to score in the next 45 minutes or their relegation is confirmed.

Like death and taxes, a booking for Casemiro is one of life's certainties. As a pessimistic United fan I'm fearing a second yellow and consequences so big I don't want to consider.
