  1. 'We need to be clinical at the top end of the pitch'published at 18:16 British Summer Time 13 May 2023

    FT: Chelsea 2-2 Nottingham Forest

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard speaking to Sky Sports: "It was slow from us in the first half. We had all of the ball. Their threat is always going to be crosses and counters and set-pieces. We expected that but from our point of view we were too slow at the top end of the pitch. Too sideways, too slow and we go 2-1 up and it's a long throw and then a goal so we were disappointed that we didn't start the first half how we started the second half.

"The things I said to them at half-time were only reinforcements but maybe a bit stronger than what I said before the game. Our last home game against Brentford was similar in the sense that you lose 45 minutes.

"In this moment it was a random ball into the box and they score. Their only other threats were set-pieces but you've got to take responsibility for your own actions as a team and we were didn't give them the problems that we should have in the first half.

On Raheem Sterling's brace: "Great goals, great position to be in for the first for a winger and an individual goal for the second one which is great for him. I'm really pleased for him because players at the top end really need that and we need more of that.

"Some players are developing a bit and you need to control games. There are games both before and since I have been here where we control the game and have over 70% possession. It doesn't count for much if you're not going to be clinical at the top end of the pitch. Raheem was clinical in those moments and occasions but we need that more."

  2. 'The situation was bigger than us'published at 18:16 British Summer Time 13 May 2023

    Southampton 0-2 Fulham

    Southampton

More from Southampton boss Ruben Selles to BBC Match of the Day after Saints' relegation:

“I think we didn’t show exactly the team we want to be – I think today the situation was bigger than us.

“But even then, in those key moments, we scored a goal and it was offside and then from the next action we concede – that has been the trend for the whole season.

“Fulham had a couple of good chances in the first half when we were not on point but I think the situation was too big – we were ready for it but we didn’t show exactly what we want to be.”

  3. 'We lose half the game by starting slow'published at 18:15 British Summer Time 13 May 2023

    FT: Chelsea 2-2 Nottingham Forest

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "The second half was ours, control of the game was ours obviously in terms of possession but in the first half we weren't dynamic enough in the top end of the pitch.

"Everything we spoke about at the start of the game, it was too slow. Unfortunately it seems to be intrinsic here at the minute where we play a lot of passes but they are not to break lines or to threaten the opposition in the top end of the pitch. Obviously their two goals you are not happy with because it's a long throw for the second one and the first one comes from a header from a nothing ball into the box.

"From our point of view we lose half the game by starting slow. We start the second half, overlap and score and make sprints, movements and we score. whether it's a fair result I don't know but we have to do more to win the game.

On his message for the second half: "It was quite easy for me because it was nothing to do with tactics. It was our own problem of not being dynamic enough. When you are Chelsea and where you are trying to get to, you have to do more at the top end of the pitch and be willing and have hunger to get into the box. The minute we injected that, the whole stadium could see the difference."

"There wasn't a rocket but I just said what needed to be said. Tactics are irrelevant if you aren't fast at the top end. The ideas for the players were there before the game. We didn't implement them in the first half but when we did implement them, we improved and excited the crowd and they had the feeling of wanting to see forward runs and passes.

On Nottingham Forest's first goal: "I haven't spoke to Edou [Edouard Mendy] about it. I don't know. I was disappointed that they scored a goal, not from Edou's individual situation. I think a ball into the box, a bit of a lone man in the box is obviously disappointing."

On Raheem Sterling's second goal: "Yeah it was a brilliant goal and also the first one, I think just from being around the penalty area, it was an important position to take and not be out wide and Raheem has obviously done that throughout his whole career. We have to understand it's not just about Raheem doing that, it's about other attacking players getting in the box to do that. At the moment we have some developing players. There a lot of things to work on for the club long-term not to take away from Raheem's two goals because the second one was brilliant and that's what you want from your players at the top end of the pitch."

  4. 'There is no time for happiness or satisfaction'published at 18:14 British Summer Time 13 May 2023

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Wolves

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag speaking to BBC Match of the Day:

"It's not up to me, it is an aspect of the club that other people deal with, the owners. I have to develop and to progress the team, and to of course plan. I will go for high standards, so I am planning my squad for next season in the background, with high standards. Then it is up to the others to decide if the finances are there.

"I think you have to see the wider perspective. We had many clean sheets, I think the most in the league. But then we also had some bad defeats, and we are not scoring that easily. Today another [opposition] goalkeeper is Man of the Match, we do that often, we are very good at that.

"In this moment there is no time for happiness or satisfaction - we have to work and to improve. Get the team ready but improve. That is what I demand from my players, my staff and myself."

  6. 'Showed it in bits but not been good enough'published at 18:10 British Summer Time 13 May 2023

    Southampton 0-2 Fulham

    Southampton

More from Southampton boss Ruben Selles to BBC Match of the Day after Saints' relegation:

“There is not only one reason [for relegation] – but one of the things that we didn’t find during the season was enough togetherness, enough trust in each other just to be competitive.

“We showed it in bits in games like against Chelsea, Arsenal, in the first half against Newcastle but we were not able to be continuously competitive in those moments – we have not been good enough as a team."

On whether the problems pre-dated his interim reign:

“I will not make that excuse, that is not me – when I took the team I was convinced I could get this team out of relegation and I didn’t make it, and I am the first one who is responsible for this run. From the beginning I thought we can do it so if somebody is responsible for the last three months, it’s me.

    On his future:

“No, I don’t have any indication right now. We talk with the club and we will do that at the end of the season – I say ‘with or without me’ because that is the reality, it is one or the other, there are only two options.

“I know the quality around me, I feel it and I know the club will bounce back quick."

  7. 'We gave everything today'published at 18:09 British Summer Time 13 May 2023

    FT: Chelsea 2-2 Nottingham Forest

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We always hope to get a win I know that maybe sounds a bit ambitious with how we have been away from home this year but it is about belief, backing yourselves and we do have that in the team. There is a bit of disappointment in the dressing room because we scored two goals and being 1-0 up compared to the goals we gave away, they were very different.

"But we gave everything today, we showed desire and belief but it is Chelsea away from home. It is as tough as it gets when Chelsea are at their best and they played some good football as well. We managed the game well, apart from the obvious, and we will take the point of course but we've also got to go a bit deeper and look at what went well and what we could do better next time.

"We are going through a stage of working really hard for our goals. We have probably scored more goals in the last few than during any other stage in the season. Guys are disappointed in the dressing room but I like that because it shows how much everybody care. The dressing room is together and you can see that on the pitch. To get a point is positive overall but we know that we have to do some things better and keep going.

"Chelsea had a lot of the ball but if you look at the goals, there are things we could do better. We're all in this together, we never look at individuals, that's not the culture we have. we only focus on the collective. We always try to find solutions to get the result, especially away from home and fortunately today it worked. So let's get back on the bus, head back to Nottingham and get back to work.

On Taiwo Awoniyi's goals: "He scored with his head as well which we were very pleased with that. We talked about it and there was a chance at Brentford that we thought he could have done better with so it was good that he got the two goals. Especially the first one, I think he showed good bravery. You always want your striker to score goals and we have goals in the team so really pleased for him. Don't forget he missed large parts of the second half of the season being injured. It shows his commitment to return to the team, play well and now get a few goals which is a real plus."

"It's dangerous to make something of anything in this league, we've just got to really focus on ourselves. Two games, we are at home next and we've got a week to get ready for it and we will be because the guys give everything. Hopefully we can get the result that everyone is desperate for.

"You can see the support we got today which is pretty normal really. A lot has been said about our home support but it has been just as good away. It's just the fact that we haven't got the results. At least they've got something to go home with today."

  8. 'Tiredness can never be an excuse'published at 18:07 British Summer Time 13 May 2023

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Wolves

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag speaking to BBC Match of the Day:

"We had a tough week. Three days ago we dropped important points because of individual mistakes but also low energy levels. That can't be [acceptable]. Today we bounced back.

"Tiredness can never be an excuse. As a Man Utd player you have to deliver. You have to match high standards, give the performance, and take the responsibility as an individual and as a team.

"[Winning today] it means nothing if you are not in the top three or four. We have to fight for that. We have to stay calm, stay focussed and go to the next game. We need to make sure we have the right energy levels so we can fight and make sure we get it over the line.

"In terms of the way we play, I think we have a base. Also in the culture, we have a base. But we know we have to make those next steps for really competing with the top two."

  9. 'Bentley showed he's ready to play with us'published at 18:06 British Summer Time 13 May 2023

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Wolves

    Wolves

Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui to Sky Sports: "I am not happy because we lost but I don't have anything to talk about with the players. We have achieved our important aim.

"For the first half I don't remember many clear chances. We had 20 or 25 good minutes. Maybe we could have done better."

On Dan Bentley: "He deserves it. He had a good match. He showed he's ready to play with us.

"We are fighting with a team playing for the Champions League. We have to be professional.

"We have to try to finish the season in the best way. We had a big achievement. Being safe with three games to go was very difficult. If the club want to keep in the Premier League and to improve they have to take a decision."

  10. 'Enough quality to bounce back' - Sellespublished at 18:05 British Summer Time 13 May 2023

    Southampton 0-2 Fulham

    Southampton

Southampton boss Ruben Selles to BBC Match of the Day after Saints' relegation:

“It is a very tough day – for me, for everybody in the dressing room, for the city, for the fans. It has been a tough season for all of us.

“We have been fighting not to be relegated from the very beginning and the day came today. I just want to say thank you to everybody for the support we felt from the very first day.

“It’s tough, especially for the fans that have been supporting us for their entire lives.

“This club has quality enough to bounce back immediately, with or without me, but what we feel now is a very big disappointment."

  11. 'As dominant a home performance as I've seen'published at 18:04 British Summer Time 13 May 2023

    FT: Crystal Palace 2-0 Bournemouth

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson speaking to Premier League Productions: "I'm very pleased, an excellent performance from the team. At this time of year you never know if players will find motivation, but to be so dominant is rewarding for them, and I'm delighted to see it.

"It's as dominant a home performance I've seen since the Leicester game.

"All coaches and managers want to see these performances continue, rather than reaching goals then knocking off. The training I've seen, I had no fears that would happen, and today's game blew that out the water."

On Eberechi Eze: "We work with him to use his talents to the full, on the training pitch and his role in the team. It's not a case of talking, but showing and explaining where he works best."

On Wilfried Zaha: "You're always worried when players pull up like he did, we just have to hope it isn't one of those injuries which keep you out for two weeks."

  12. 'We try to be close to excellence'published at 18:02 British Summer Time 13 May 2023

    FT: Aston Villa 2-1 Tottenham

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery speaking to BBC MOTD: "We connected with them and they connected with us. When we are winning 2-0 we were thinking of scoring another goal. The result is a very good result. It's still very difficult to get a European position but we can be excited and motivated.

"The first half was very good. We controlled the game very well and tried to get into the attacking third. We got chances. We scored one goal and had another three or four chances to score. They didn't really get out into our box. We were getting tired in the second half. We played a very good second half, not like the first, but very good. That's what we want to create and build here with the club.

"We are taking some risks but the players are feeling comfortable. I want to achieve the excellence we need defensively. It's not always keeping it. We will work to try to be it. Now the team is doing very well. We have to be very focused to try to improve and be close to excellence.

"It will still be very difficult. Today was very important to keep the chance as much as we can to get it. It is not in our hands. But we are finishing today with the same points as Tottenham. We will try to be motivated to play as much with that possibility of being there."

  13. 'We can't keep giving teams a head start'published at 18:00 British Summer Time 13 May 2023

    FT Aston Villa 2-1 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham interim boss Ryan Mason, speaking to BBC MOTD: "It's disappointing. Obviously the start is difficult to take - it's happened too many times this season going a goal down very early

"First half, to be honest, I thought they were better than us. I didn't think Fraser [Forster] had to do anything in goal in terms of pulling off a load of saves. In the second half we gained a little bit more control and we had our big moment at 1-0 but the keeper has pulled off an outstanding save.

"If you want to be a big team and compete at the top of the table you cannot give teams a goal head start. It's very difficult in this league to win games of football. You have to earn everything.

"We understand today was a big game [in terms of qualifying for Europe] and I'm very disappointed in the outcome. But we do have two games to put it right. Hopefully we can respond well and put it right."

  15. 'We are not finished yet'published at 17:55 British Summer Time 13 May 2023

    FT: Southampton 0-2 Fulham

    Fulham

Speaking to Sky Sports, Fulham boss Marco Silva said: "I want to congratulate the players and the fans. It was great support and the players did well coming away from home with the three points and the clean sheet.

"It was a warm day, it was difficult and from the first minute we were the best team on the pitch. We controlled the game until the last minute. We had one or two good chances to score before the 1-0 and then we scored the second.

"We knew before the match, they [Southampton] were in a difficult situation and it was the last chance for them to keep believing with the supporters behind them but we took the ball from them in the first minute. We played in our style and we have all of the sympathy with them. It's a really difficult moment for Southampton. They are a big club and they will come stronger next season.

"It shows the quality of our work, the players are always open to learn and improve every single day. It is a good dressing room and we always want to play with our style and philosophy and we have shown our quality, we are not finished yet and we want more."

  16. 'Most important thing is progress we have made'published at 17:54 British Summer Time 13 May 2023

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Wolves

    Wolves

Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui speaking to the BBC:

"Congratulations to Dan [Bentley], his first match in the Premier League. I think he played very well, very calm. Three very good saves. I am happy for him.

"We don't think about away or home. Each match we go to try to win. Each match has different problems, and we will try again [to win] in the next one. The most important thing for us is to remember where we were four months ago, and where we are now. Incredible progress for us.

" Of course we want to finish better, fight until the end. Today we have tried to do this. I don't have anything to say about the attitude of the players. Now we have to put our focus towards playing against Everton at home."

  19. 'It's happened far too many times'published at 17:53 British Summer Time 13 May 2023

    FT: Aston Villa 2-1 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Ryan Mason speaking to PLP: "The start wasn't good again going 1-0 down. As the game settled more in the second half I thought we were the team that was creating more naturally. Obviously to concede the second goal and in the manner we did, after missing a big opportunity, it was disappointing.

"It's something we've spoken about. It's happened far too many times. If we want to be a big team, challenging at the top of the table, that can't happen.

"We had a gameplan but we just didn't execute it well enough. We wanted to exploit their high line but we didn't get the timing of our runs right. I thought there was massive opportunities. When we timed our runs better we were creating moments. It's disappointing but we have to pick ourselves up.

"We wanted to win today but it's still in our hands and we need to win the next two games. Hopefully we can do that."
