Simon: Can't be a better feeling for a football manager. You bring two new players into the team and they combine to create a goal after six minutes!

Owen: You step out of the room for 10 seconds...

Sent the cat running out of the room when that goal went in. Finally a goal from open play and maybe we can relax a bit? Of course not, this is England... but what a start!

Lauren James has one goal and nearly creates another with a dangerous ball sent in towards the near post.

Only excellent defending from Simone Boye, getting there in front of Alessia Russo, wipes out the danger, but England come again and win a corner, but it comes to nothing.

Lauren James and Ella Toone causing plenty of problems in the middle for Denmark, one and two-touch combinations.

They won't have expected her to be coming inside and doubling up just in front of the back line.

Her partnership with Rachel Daly on the left hand side is working to a tee.

That is exactly why I say Lauren James needs to play in the 10. When she has space and time to turn and finish like that, that is why she should be in there.

Lauren James at her best. Right foot, off the left side, central position, space made for her by Daly pulling out wide.

You give a player like Lauren James the time and space, she has the poise, quality and technique to do this.

It has been all England from the off.

What a moment on her first-ever start for James, phenomenal!

What a goal from Lauren James. That is absolutely outstanding. A rocket to put England ahead against Denmark.

Sarina Wiegman's changes have paid off. It is just beautiful from James.

And that is why everyone is excited about Lauren James!

It's her first World Cup start, she's been playing for six minutes and she beats a player and puts it into the corner.

She does things others can't do. A magical player and that was one from the catalogue.

GOAL - England 1-0 Denmarkpublished at 6 mins

    Lauren James

    A wonder strike!

England lead and it comes after only six minutes. The ball finds Rachel Daly on the left and she knocks it to Lauren James.

A burst of pace from her takes her past her marker then from 22 yards out she finds a superb curled right-footed finish that gives Lene Christensen no chance in the Denmark goal.

A brilliant goal, a brilliant start.

This is good possession from England, one touch and move.

Keira Walsh chips a ball over the defence for Chloe Kelly, close to the right touchline, to run at the Danes but the move comes to an end with some excellent defending from Katrine Veje, who gets her body in the way and is able to clear.

England seeing a lot of the ball early on.

Just the one change from the consistent back four/five during the Euros, with the absent Leah Williamson replaced by Alex Greenwood at centre-half.

Greenwood arguably had her best season last year in that role. My preferred choice.

England happy to knock the ball about around the back, giving Mary Earps an early touch.

The Lionesses move forward slowly, with it eventually falling to Lauren James on the left flank, but the delivery is not the best and it goes harmlessly behind for a goal kick.

Ultimately, Sarina Wiegman knew she could bring Rachel Daly in as a full-back or a striker and she will do an exquisite job. Maybe she will start to support the attack and play further forward.

    I'm excited for this.

There's still lots of people finding their seats in the concourse area but there's already a decent noise in here - and a lot of it is coming from the England fans.

    England

England manager Sarina Wiegman speaking to the BBC before the match against Denmark: "We think now this is the best starting line-up to start this game.

"We are starting Alessia up front and we know she has done really well but for us we know [Daly] has done well as centre-forward and as a left back. Today she will start as a left-back.

"I think we created lots of chances in the last game. It's not that we don't play well. Overall we create lots of chances it's just today starting with Alex [Greenwood] in the centre we think in possession that [will help us play against the way] we expect Denmark to start."

    Rachel Brown-Finnis
    Ex-England goalkeeper on BBC Tv

I am expecting England to get better and better as this World Cup goes on, so this performance should be much improved on their win against Haiti.

England have come into this tournament in a totally different place in terms of momentum and confidence than they were before the Euros, and are also without some key personnel, so it is is going to take a bit longer for the team to gel.

But we do have plenty of experienced players at major finals, and lots of quality too - plus a real mastermind of a manager - so I still think we will get the job done. 1-0.

  20. 'This England side is really relaxed'published at 09:25 British Summer Time 28 July 2023

    England v Denmark (09:30 BST)

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Former England goalkeeper Karen Bardsley has told BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast that, while "the performance is incredibly important", winning is "what's really going to matter" against Denmark.

"The girls will have learnt a lot very quickly off the back of that Haiti performance in terms of where they are and where they can tidy up," she said.

"The possession was OK in parts, but wasn’t exactly well executed. We’ve seen them be tidier, we’ve seen them be better. Most of the chances Haiti created were off the back of England being dispossessed or untidy. They’ll try to put that right and be more ruthless in front of goal this evening.

"At this moment in time, I don’t think anything has changed in terms of the Lionesses’ mentality in their approach to this game or the next. They’re going to want to make sure they dictate what their performance is and the quality of it.

"Sarina Wiegman is a fantastic manager. She’s very pragmatic and logical in the way she approaches the game, but she is also a fantastic manager of people, she gets people. This Lionesses side are really relaxed, they enjoy being together."
