It has to be special because they have to generate that atmosphere that the players can feed off.

Speaking of Mark Robins, Coventry announced earlier today that he's signed a new four-year contract with the club.

The 53-year-old is in his second spell in charge and has guided City from League Two to now being in contention for a return to the top flight.

"The journey that we have been on together has been amazing so far," he said.

"I look forward to continuing that work in the next four years and the improvement on and off the pitch of this great football club."

Robins, incidentally, is also not a man that's easy to find pictured smiling.

The mood on Teesside is optimistic, as Middlesbrough return to home turf for this play-off semi decider with all to play for.

There are flags on every seat that are already being waved, and with a sell-out crowd already boxed off, the onus is on the Boro fans to crank up the atmosphere.

Some have already made it in, there's an excitable hum of chatter over the sonic boom of the PA system, as they fancy Michael Carrick's side can get the job done and take their team to Wembley.

Coventry fans have also taken every seat available to them in their corner of the stadium, while some are taking on some 'Dutch courage' in the concourse, others are out soaking up the atmosphere.

It's a long way to come to be disappointed. They will be backing Mark Robins' side to the hilt to ensure they're not.

Looking ahead to tonight, Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick says he "trusts" his team to complete the job.

Boro, who finished the regular season in fourth, five points above Coventry, are looking to return to the top flight after a six-year absence.

"I'm not one for nerves," said Carrick. "It was very different when I had to perform on the pitch [as a player].

"I'm pretty calm on the sidelines, I think I have to be for the decisions I have to make and I'm not directly involved in the game.

"I'm not nervous, I trust the boys 100%."

Coventry failed to muster a single shot on target as they played out a goalless draw with Middlesbrough in the first leg of their Championship play-off semi-final on Sunday.

Boro came closest to scoring when Chuba Akpom and Isaiah Jones brought first-half saves from goalkeeper Ben Wilson.

"There was very little to choose between the teams," said Sky Blues boss Mark Robins after the match.

"It was disappointing in terms of chances created by both sides, but the energy was phenomenal."

As for Sunderland, there is to be no back-to-back promotions from the third tier through to the Premier League.

Manager Tony Mowbray, who was appointed in August and led the Black Cats to a sixth-place finish in the Championship, told BBC Radio Newcastle: "It wasn't to be tonight and they'll be disappointed of course, but I'm proud of the team, proud of the young players, proud of the supporters, proud of the city.

"We can only grow from this point. If we get it right in the summer, if we recruit well and if we manage to keep more players more fit next year, this squad is good enough to compete again at the top end."

Captain Tom Lockyer was Luton's match-winner at a noisy Kenilworth Road, nodding the Hatters into a 2-0 lead in the second leg of their semi-final against Sunderland just before half-time.

Lockyer told BBC Three Counties Radio: "These are the special nights, these are the ones you remember at the end of your career.

"I‘ve got one eye on the bigger picture now, which is that we don’t just want to go for a day out at Wembley, we want to go there and do something special."

Whoever does win tonight's second leg will come up against Luton Town under the famous arch on 27 May.

First-half goals from Gabriel Osho and Tom Lockyer were enough for a 2-0 second-leg win over Sunderland at Kenilworth Road, which meant Luton went through 3-2 on aggregate.

    Middlesbrough v Coventry (Agg: 0-0, 20:00 BST)

Coventry haven't played Premier League football since their 34-year-long stay ended under Gordon Strachan in 2001 - and this is comfortably the closest they have come to getting back there in the 22 years since.

Their story over the past decade in particular has been remarkable - two more relegations, two changes of owner, two stadium moves and eight challenging years of groundsharing with rugby club Wasps.

Middlesbrough, meanwhile, have tasted Premier League football much more recently, suffering relegation in 2017 after a one-year stay at the top table.

When Michael Carrick was appointed as boss with the season 17 games old on 24 October, they were down in 21st - amazingly, actually one place higher than tonight's opponents Coventry.

That one of these teams will be on their way to Wembley by the end of this evening is nothing short of extraordinary.

My team's been in them, my team's lost in them... and I'd challenge anyone to name me a more nerve-wracking, headache-inducing and all-round unpleasant experience as a football fan than watching your club take part in the English Football League play-offs.

Yet it's kind of hard not to love them, isn't it?
