    Switzerland 1-2 Spain

How relieved must Laia Codina feel? She can put that shocking mistake behind her now.

I'd probably just opt to smack the ball anywhere but backwards from now on, though.

As starts go, this has been magnificent.

Three goals, one stunning save, a terrible own goal...and we've not even reached 20 minutes.

    Alba Redondo

    Spain back in front!

It has been coming to be fair. Ona Batlle plays a great ball into the box and Alba Redondo gets away from her marker to anticipate the bounce of the ball and guide a header into the corner.

Lovely finish. Three goals with less than 20 minutes on the clock, what a start to the knockouts!

  4. Postpublished at 16 mins

    Switzerland 1-1 Spain

All Spain at the moment and Esther González shows great footwork as she receives the ball inside the box, sends one defending sliding past but her shot is eventually deflected behind for another corner, which is cleared.

  5. CLOSE!published at 14 mins

    Switzerland 1-1 Spain

Spain put that awful goal behind them as they go back on the pursuit of a second and they really should be ahead again as Irene Paredes rises to meet a corner. It is a free header from close range but she puts it over.

Spain keeper Cata Coll is not going to forget her first senior start in a hurry. What must she be thinking? Laia Codina didn't give her a chance.

  7. 'Doesn't even look up'published at 06:15 British Summer Time 5 August 2023

    Switzerland 1-1 Spain

    Gilly Flaherty
Former England defender on BBC One

I've got my head in my hands - as a centre-back, that's one of the worst things you dream about.

She doesn't even look up to see where the goalkeeper is, she hasn't got an idea where Coll is - it's not good enough for an international player.

    Laia Codina OG

    An absolute shocker!

What on earth is Laia Codina thinking? The Spain defender is up by the halfway line and, under a slight bit of pressure from a Switzerland attacker, opts to pass back to her goalkeeper, but she doesn't just pass, she pretty much smacks it without looking and consequently sends the ball flying into her own net.

A terrible mistake on her World Cup debut.

  9. Postpublished at 10 mins

    Switzerland 0-1 Spain

Almost a second for Spain as, from their first corner of the game, skipper Esther González flicks a header onto the roof of the net.

    Switzerland 0-1 Spain

That's the first goal Switzerland have conceded in New Zealand. And what a mess. After Gaelle Thalmann produces a fine save, Switzerland fail to clear and Aitana Bonmatí drills home her second goal of the tournament. Perfect response by Spain after the horror show against Japan.

    Switzerland 0-1 Spain

Nadine Riesen stretches a bit too much to try and stab away the ball and the Switzerland defender needs some treatment but is ultimately okay to continue.

It is all Spain at the moment as they look to add a second and pretty much wrap things up very early.

    Switzerland 0-1 Spain

    Gilly Flaherty

Thalmann will be fuming because she makes an incredible save - but you do not let a player like Bonmati turn in the box and allow her a shot like that.

It's a fantastic finish but you don't allow a player like that the time to line up a shot from the edge of the box.

  13. goal

GOAL - Switzerland 0-1 Spainpublished at 5 mins

    Aitana Bonmatí

    Perfect start for Spain!

Gutting for Gaëlle Thalmann after the Switzerland goalkeeper made a superb save from point-blank range to push the ball onto the post but the Swiss are unable to scramble clear and Aitana Bonmatí is there to sweep in.

  14. 'Swiss will have seen Spain weaknesses'published at 06:03 British Summer Time 5 August 2023

    Switzerland 0-0 Spain

    Gilly Flaherty
Former England defender on BBC One

You look at some of the results from the group stages and just your name doesn't warrant you getting further in the competition.

Switzerland will have taken great joy in watching the Japan game and seeing the weaknesses Spain have - and they will hope to exploit them today.

  15. Postpublished at 3 mins

    Switzerland 0-0 Spain

Half a chance for both sides inside the first couple of minutes as a cross from the right just fails to find Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic in the box for Switzerland, before Esther González has a shot on the turn blocked for Spain.

Eden Park is about three-quarters full. Lots of noise. Lots of colour. The knockout stage is under way. It's winner takes all. One of these teams is going home.

  17. KICK-OFFpublished at 1 min

Off we go in Auckland with Switzerland getting the game under way.

Remember, it is knockout football now so there will be extra time and penalties if the scores are level after 90 minutes.

  18. 'Bold move from Spain'published at 05:56 British Summer Time 5 August 2023

    Switzerland v Spain (06:00 BST)

    Fern Whelan
Former England and Brighton defender on BBC One

It's a bold move [from Spain to make five changes] but something had to be done after the 4-0 defeat by Japan in the group stages.

Spain started the tournament really well but it was a heavy defeat to Japan - but changing your goalkeeper is still a bold move.

The defence didn't really help in that game and there had to be changes there as well.

Dusseldorf-born Switzerland boss Inka Grings must be one of the few Germans left at this tournament after the two-time world champions surprisingly failed to get out of the group stage.

She has kept faith with most of her players throughout the group stage, with 10 of today's XI making their fourth starts.

They include three-times Champions League winner Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic, who plays her club football in Spain with Barcelona.

Keeper Gaelle Thalmann will also know the opposition well as she plays for Real Betis.
